It’s like they don’t think other fantasy exists.

This is what I don’t get. There is such a treasure trove of amazing fantasy (and scifi!) material, dating back at least half a century…how come we have to keep recycling the same handful of stories and characters? Is it really that difficult to take any sort of risk?

Which one do you like more? The Prequels or the Sequels? And why?
Time

The prequels. By quite a margin.

I have a lot of nostalgia for them, just because I was a kid when they came out. I didn’t care about the politics, and I think the fact that the movies are just stupid in some regard actually worked in their favor when it came to kids. Even watching them now, I feel very fond of this or that scene - you can make fun of the dumb ones, call out the memes that some of them spawned…despite all their issues, watching the prequels is fun.

The sequels, on the other hand…I really wonder if, in 20 years, people who saw them as kids are going to feel the same way about them. I could see TFA ‘holding up’, since there are a lot parallels to the original, but the other two…they’re not as quirky as the prequels, they don’t have the OT’s charme. They are, in some regards, painfully forgettable.

What are you reading?
Time

I’ve been on a Murakami-kick lately. His work is unlike any other I’ve read before, which makes it very intriguing to me. Of the ones I’ve read, aside from Norwegian Wood, which is a somewhat regular love story, they’ve all started off like any other book, but ended up describing a fantastical/magical world. I’d almost say they’re comparable to the journeys of characters in Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli movies. Would highly recommend!

Info & Chat: The 'price of collecting / buying Star Wars merch & memorabilia' thread...

Something that caught my eye in the last few weeks was the seemingly extortionate price of the coming ‘Int-4 mini-rig’ - originally listed for US $52 - yet later increased to US $79.99 (or US $120 in the UK; when the currency is converted).

Oh, if you think that’s bad, better not take a look at Lego Star Wars…$1000/€1000/£900 for the latest (terrible!) Death Star 75419. $30/€30/£25 for a tiny, 92-piece N-1 Starfighter. They’re out of their minds.

Star Wars / Marvel Comics crossover incoming
Time

It was bound to happen sooner or later, but I’m not sure how to feel about this…

https://www.marvel.com/articles/comics/star-wars-marvel-hope-assembles-crossover-comic-series-january-2027

“To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Star Wars, Marvel Comics and Lucasfilm Publishing unveiled Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles, the first-ever crossover between the two beloved franchises launching in January 2027. Penned by pop culture icon Kevin Smith and drawn by Uncanny X-Men (2024) superstar David Marquez, the historic five-issue limited series assembles heroes and villains from both universes in a single story for the first time. As the Avengers, Spider-Man, and more team up with the iconic Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, and Chewbacca, Doctor Doom will ally himself with the likes of Darth Vader and the Galactic Empire.”

Hey everyone, I was a long-time accountless reader here, but finally signed up a couple of months ago after the site became restricted due to scraping. Like many, I originally found out about the forums through Harmy’s work.

I’ve been a lifelong fan of SW - but being too young to have seen the OT at the cinema, I remember watching it on VHS tapes that my parents had recorded on TV. Later, when the prequels came out, my dad took me to the cinema to see them. Lots of fond memories.

I look forward to partaking in discussions here, for a change!

Star Wars Comic Library, Vol 1

And I thought ‘Star Wars Legends: The Newspaper Strips Omnibus’ a couple of months back was expensive:

I’ve had my eye on both of these, but I just can’t really justify the price - especially since the heft of these hardcovers makes them so uncomfortable to read, anyway. At least, going purely by weight, the Comic Library is a great deal compared to the Newspaper Strips - 5.58kg vs 2.28kg…

Whats the best way to watch the original trilogy?

90%+ of people will stop watching 4K77 once these are released officially.

Some people do prefer the grainy print look, but most don’t.

This is probably true, but the remaining 10% will be very vocal about the issues they see in the official release. I can imagine new preservation projects popping up, taking parts from both 4K77 and the official release.
