Beauty and the beast : French Original Dub and Opening Title + Color Timing + Original Background (WIP)

I see where you’re coming from and just hoping this all goes well. Also, kinda unrelated but since you have “French original dub” in the title, which implies this got redubbed, what’s the difference between the two French dubs?

In 2002, they changed the voice of Mrs. Potts, for legal reasons. They also redub a few lines here and there for other characters.

Interesting project you got going, though if I had to make a suggestion, if you’re converting the 4K footage from SDR back to SDR, why not just use the regular 2D Blu-ray footage which can save you the trouble?

Also, I’m curious as to which sources you’re using for this project in order to see how close to accuracy that can be achieved here.

Hi, the UHD version have better compression and more detail than the BD 2D version. The colors are also better.
For make an “ultimate” version, this is the best version to use despite the flaws that UHD has.

I would combine UHD with Blu-Ray 3D scenes which have more visible image.

And I have a 35mm scan project that will allow me to share (for donors) a 35mm grindhouse version, but also to recover 2 scenes that have been modified on BD/UHD/3D and integrate them into my custom UHD project .

The modified UHD version is intended to be shared with everyone, but if people participate in the 35mm project, the modified UHD version will move faster too 😃

Beauty and the Beast (1991) 35mm (need help).
Time

I have the chance to get a German print of BATB scanned.
The film is accompanied by some features (short trailers “Jungle Book”, “Bambi” and the Goofy-cartoon “How to Dance”).

To finance the project, we would need 750€.

A grindhouse-version will be provided to donors shortly after the print is scanned.
A cleaned version might be added later, but that’s not sure.
This project will also tie into my other UHD Blu-Ray fix project. The UHD / BD has modified scenes (modified backgrounds, or removed elements) and a calibration that does not make everyone agree.
Only a 35mm print would correct this.

The 35mm version will have at least the following audio:
English (2.0 Laserdisc), German (2.0 optical), French (2.0 Laserdisc).

If all goes well, I could add European audio tracks that I own: Spanish, Portuguese, Italian 5.1, as well as English 7.1.

I specify that only donors will receive the file.

If you’re interested, please send me a PM !

Thank you to future participants.

Total donations: 198€

Color matching and prediction: color correction tool v1.3 released!
Time

Thanks to Dr Dre for this great tool.
I have several questions:

  • In your projects, do you apply only one LUT on the film? Or do you use a LUT for each scene ?
If you do it for each scene, it must take you a long time (crop a reference image, and start the process for each scene)

Sometimes the results are not accurate on small areas, if I want to fix that I figured I had to do this:
-Relaunch the process, with in test image, the LUT applied (to generate a second LUT on top).
Is this the correct method?

Integration of an element in a scene?
Time

I’m trying to integrate gaston’s missing chair on the UHD and BD.
I isolated the chair from the blu ray 3D and I try to integrate it into the UHD but I don’t know which is the most suitable tool.
I tried with premiere pro and chroma key effects, but the results are not great

The missing chair (UHD / BD)

Integration of the chair (WIP)

The legs of the chair cross the character.

It’s possible to separate Y and UV on premiere pro?

I want to recreate B&tB with a similar look like on theater in 1991.

For the 2002 Special Edition release, many scenes have been changed.
Fortunately, when viewing the film in theatrical version (on BD or UHD), most of these scenes become as before.
But some scenes have been “permanently changed”.

8min30 :
Theatrical 1991 / VHS / LD

Imax SE 2002 / DVD / BD / 3D / UHD Background:

56min30 :
This error is present on UHD and BD, even when viewing in Theatrical Version.
Only the BD 3D doesn’t have this problem.

Theatrical 1991 / VHS / LD / BD 3D

LD :

BD 3D (same background):

Imax SE 2002 / DVD / BD / UHD :

gaston’s missing chair (31min23):
BD / UHD :

3D :

The objective of the project:
Put back the original scenes, to make a 4k and 1080p version.
The colorimetry will also be slightly revised, to find the contrasts of the 1991 version.

• Remade the good background at 0:08:30
-Recreation of the original background in 4k (WIP) :

-Cleaning the background on all frames of this scene (done)
-Color matching (WIP)

• Using the scene at 56min30 from the BD 3D to replace that on UHD
-Expand the space of BD3D (1.66) to get a 1.78 ratio (done) :

• Replace the logo castle opening, for the 80-90’s logo castle (WIP)
-Finding the best source for the 80-90’s logo castle (for the moment, I’ve found the best on “The Great Mouse Detective” BD, there’s a bit of color banding, but I can fix it)

• Change Color Timing for give the same contrast as on 35mm and LD / VHS (WIP)

And for my French community :

• Replace the original opening logo for the french logo (WIP)
Logo on LD:

Logo recreation :

• Original French dubbing (done)
-Capture of the french LD 44,1 khz bit-perfect (done)
-Sync on BR/3D/UHD finalized on 24 bits 48 khz (done)
