SW: SHADOWS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC (3-in-1 Prequel Film) ** V2 cut AVI Release Now Available
Time

Yeah, way to destroy the films, JasonN.  By providing alternative versions that people interested in can watch and those disinterested in can simply disregard :)

I just got turned onto this whole fan-editing thing recently, after, of course, having heard about adywan's Revisited via the interwebs.  Now i'm hooked.  and I'm watching movies and wondering to myself, "how could this be improved by a fan-editor"?

With such a rich imaginary world, as Star Wars is, the possibilities are nearly endless regarding storyline and technical changes to the films, and every fan-editor brings something new and original to their particular edits.  If anything, it keeps the Star Wars universe new and exciting with every new edit, rather than stagnating over time at the risk of becoming outdated.

I personally enjoy JasonN's versions because they combine, in my opinion, an excellent mixture of subtle plot variations that work extremely well (i.e. Dooku as a rogue Jedi separatist) as well professionally executed cuts that reduce the more childish and annoying aspects of the Prequel Trilogy (i.e. Jar-Jar and young Anakin).

If either of these types of changes are not up your alley, and you'd rather stick to the versions you know, then simply don't watch a fan-edit and then post on a board that is intended to be forum for friendly (if heated) debate about differing artistic interpretations of Star Wars, and all films in general.  Or, if you are open minded enough to watch a fan-edit, but you thought it was sub-par for any reason, then simply state the reasons you thought that way, rather than throwing out a blanket term that someone "destroyed" the films.  It just comes off as narrow-minded and rather pointless.

JasonN's PT FanEdits (Attack of the Federation, Twilight of the Republic, & The Black Knight Rises) (Released) ** Revised V3 Cuts In The Works

Would a megaupload link be possible for any future v2 release of TOTR and/or TBKR?  (And any other fan-edits for that matter).

It's just so much faster than a free user rapidshare link where you have to keep waiting on a connection.

I think you mean The Black Knight Rises.
(unless Batman somehow made a surprise appearance in my edit that I wasn't aware of, lol)

Oops, my bad.  To be fair, I got it right further down in my post.

So how many editing projects you got going on Mr. JasonN?  Where do you find the time?

I'm a big fan of JasonN's prequel trilogy: Attack of the Federation, Twilight of the Republic, and The Dark Knight Rises, [The Black Knight Rises] so I wanted to give this 3 in 1 condensed version of the PT a shot, even though it received poor reviews on fanedit.  Well, I'm glad I did, because this version (v2) was thoroughly enjoyable.

Thoughts:

Episode I Chapter: I was very satisfied with JasonN's extreme reduction of Episode I, making it into a 20 minute action prelude.  (I was always a big fan of the old James Bond movies, where the pre-title sequence had Bond off on some other mission, unrelated to the movie proper).  And, nothing against Liam Neeson, but I like how his character is introduced and then killed off quickly, since he has nothing to do with the remainder of the story.  My only criticism of the Ep. I chapter would be that there is no introduction to the Gungans, so the viewer might not be sure who they are and why they're fighting against the invasion army (if watching this movie in a vacuum).

Episode II Chapter:  Excellent!  Introducing Anakin as an adult apprentice of Obi-Wan is a great choice.  On top of that, his introduction at the Jedi Council when he is given the mission to escort Padme to Naboo is simply a perfect context, since his love for and desire to save Padme will spell his eventual seduction to the dark side.  Brilliant!  I'm beginning to think JasonN is a mad genius of story editing.

On a technical note, there's one part of this chapter that appears to be a mistake or an unfinished edit.  When Anakin arrives at the Lars homestead on Tatooine there's some inserted dialogue of Anakin speaking Watto's language and subtitles for Owen and Cleigg Lars that are out of context.

Episode III Chapter: Excellent as well.  Also, the birth of Luke & Leia sequence, I think, is even better than JasonN's The Black Knight Rises, because we're told a girl is born, but don't get her name, so it works well in connection to the OT.

Overall, this is an extremely enjoyable edit if you want to watch the entire prequel storyline in 2.5 hours.  Some have criticized the pacing and music score as problematic, but it wasn't noticeable enough for me to hinder my enjoyment of this version.  If you suspend your disbelief, and enjoy the Episode I chapter solely as an action-packed movie intro, then I think you will be more than pleased with the rest of the film.

Any news on a DVD version release?

Does it matter?

In these edits the colour is part of a ranking system like the belts in martial arts (You could argue that Obi-Wan isn't a permanent council member which is why some of the council still have blue sabers).

No, it doesn't matter at all for the purpose of these edits.  I was just letting people know why there was only one purple lightsaber in the whole galaxy in the original prequel trilogy.

And I was merely joking about changing Yoda's back to green, as JasonN previously said in this thread that he was sick of the lightsaber discussion.  Besides, the ranking system makes sense, and I've gotten used to seeing purple for Yoda, Mace, and Count Dooku now.

JasonN's PT FanEdits (Attack of the Federation, Twilight of the Republic, & The Black Knight Rises) (Released) ** Revised V3 Cuts In The Works
Time

Finally watched TOTR & TBKR.  These edits are simply outstanding!  Thanks, JasonN.  If adywan is the master of Episode IV, then JasonN is certainly the master of fixing the prequel trilogy.  It is not only more thoroughly enjoyable now, but makes much more logical sense in its own right, as well as in connection to the OT.

There's probably too much to write about here as far as my likes/dislikes, so I'll save it for a review sometime on fanedit, but, basically I really enjoyed this version of the PT, and fully agree with almost every change that was made. (minor quibbles being simply inevitable in the realm of fan-edits).

And I was initially hesitant about the second two films, because I personally didn't mind seeing Yoda duel (which I gather JasonN despises).  But after having watched the films, I will admit, it's the right choice and it keeps the focus on Anakin where the prequels should belong anyway.

My favorite stuff: the blue crawl, all of Episode I, Jango's voice modulator (that was amazing, it actually kind of sounds like original Boba Fett), Count Dooku not being a Sith (love this plot element), radically better love story development between Anakin and Padme, and most all of Episode III.

My wish list: repaint the color of that yellow speeder Anakin uses to chase Zam (black, perhaps).  Also, repaint Yoda's lightsaber back to green. jk :) [By the by, I believe Windu's lightsaber is purple because Samuel L. Jackson specifically asked Lucas if he could have a purple one.]

Ideas Wanted: 'The Prestige' - Editing Suggestions
Time

Oh, I don't really have any skill level whatsoever in fan editing as of right now.  Although, I'd like to learn some basics whenever I get some more free time to devote to it.  So, I can't even imagine how difficult it probably is to change films, cut scenes, add scenes, and re-sync up music and dialogue and everything.  Crazy...

Anyway, all that being said, I think the the changes I was thinking of for The Prestige could be accomplished by removing scenes form the movie, and then simply extrapolating a different outcome based on what you see/don't see.

For example, let's say you only see one water tank with a body in it at the end of the movie rather than a whole bunch of them.  One could reach the conclusion the Angier only made 1 clone (animate or inanimate) or that it is Root.  (I'm not saying that would work from a plot or technical standpoint, I'm just trying to come up with a quick example).

As of right now, this is mostly an academic exercise anyway, just to find out what changes, if any, people would like to see.  Then the next step would be figuring out how to accomplish those changes, but that might some time off, or for a talented fan-editor to take up.

Well, just because it's one of my favs, doesn't mean there are not opportunities for re-editing it or changing the storyline slightly.  And, if nothing else, an edit of the movie could attempt to achieve a closer adherence to the novel.

This is a forum for "Fan Edits," is it not?

Anyway, those were just some ideas.  I'm not forcing anyone to agree with them.  That's the whole point of this thread; to see what ideas other people have.

If one thinks the movie is "perfect as it is", then that's totally understandable.  However, that doesn't add much to a forum discussion on fan editing.

Thanks for responding though.

Also, copy both the Video_TS and Audio_TS folders from the mounted drive, then burn those.

Sweet, thanks.  But how do I burn both folders to the disc?  Can i select them both at once, or do I put them both into a main folder?

On that note, what exactly is the Audio_TS folder?  It's always seems empty.

This pertains the file via the link on fanedit.info for RS DL NTSC:

When burning, I got the same ImgBurn prompt: "This image has not been mastered correctly for burning onto double layer" as TML.  I burned it anyway, but the DVD skips a lot.

When I saw Chewtobacca's advice in this thread, I built + burned an image from the VIDEO_TS folder.  That burn went fine and there was no prompt (I chose layer break at chapter 27, because ImgBurn rated it as "Good"), but the DVD still has issues with numerous skips, especially in the beginning of the movie.

The ISO file plays just fine when mounted on my PC, but I'd really like to get it on onto a playable DVD.  Any advice?

I'm just gonna throw out some possibilities to jumpstart discussion:

(1) Tesla's machine is merely a transporter (not a replicator), therefore Angier has to use Root as a double for the trick.

(2) Tesla's machine is a sham that doesn't work at all (other than as a light-show prop), so Angier has to use Root for a double.

(3) Tesla's machine works as a replicator, but the clones created are inanimate (like in the book).  Furthermore, Angier loses his identity/soul over repeated replications over time and becomes a more of a ghost of his former self each time he uses it.

(4) Merge the Borden twins into a single person and never reveal how he pulls off the trick. [While this would alter a major plot point of the movie for the final reveal, I think it could be viewed like an actual magic act, where you're not supposed to find out how it's accomplished.  Therefore, Angier's obsession to figure out the trick is never realized).

Ideas Wanted: 'The Prestige' - Editing Suggestions
Time

One of my favorite films of the past few years is “The Prestige.”  However, I feel like it is ripe with opportunities for editing, due to it’s non-linear story structure and it’s rather sci-fi explanation for the central trick as creating human clones.

Anyone have ideas on how the movie/story could be re-cut and retold for a good fan edit?

Hmm, good find. I agree that the choir-less version might merge better with the rest of the soundtrack, and it could also help to make it sound less like a rehash of episode III's duel music and more like a reference to it.

Also, I know I've said it before, but I'll say it again... I really think that the scene where Obi-Wan ignites his lightsaber should be re-touched. I admire Adywan's initiative to adress the problem that the original shot had, but I think a better approach to it would be to try and fix the original shot rather than replacing it with a new shot that I felt was not an improvement in terms of how convincing it was.

The problem with the original shot is that Obi-Wan's robe "jumps" when he ignites the saber. It should be possible to fix this with a simple morph, though, along with a couple of other little tricks.

Well said.  I'm in agreement with Timstuff.  This was the one and only visual change in Revisited that seemed sub-par from a mere technical standpoint only (leaving aesthetics aside).  The saber simply looks fake and/or Obi-Wan is standing still too long.  Perhaps this stood out even more, because the rest of the movie was so damn amazing and seamless.

Clearly, the debate is endless as far as what people would like to see, or what other changes could be made beyond Adywan's.  But for me, Obi-Wan's igniting his lightsaber for the main, climactic duel is the only thing that actually looks fake in Revisited, and possibly the only thing that can be "fixed" beyond purely artistic or editing choices, (including choice of music, etc.)

I haven't seen the Purist Edition.  How is the Obi-Want's saber addressed in that one?

Some other thoughts (on mere aesthetics):

JABBA SCENE: Keep it out; I think it slows down the movie at a point when some tension is starting to build to get the heck out of Mos Eisley.  Greedo was already after Han and the Stormtroopers are in search of the droids.  Also, just mentioning Jabba's name without showing him builds some mystique until ROTJ.  Furthermore, why did Jabba hire bounty hunters if he was going to go to Mos Eisley himself and look for Han??  Because he's fat and lazy that's why.... throw it on a deleted scenes reel where it always belonged.

MIND PROBE DROID SCENE:  Doesn't really matter.  It's slightly better than a bare needle and I'm not sure what else could be devised to improve it.  Ady chose what he did, so go with it.  Ultimately, it's such a minor issue, I don't think it's worth spending to much time on.

DUEL OF FATES MUSIC: I kind of liked it, and thought it mirrored ROTS well and matched the pace of the new, faster cut very effectively.  If you didn't like it, go with the Purist Edition right?  Problem solved.

BIGGS ON TATOOINE SCENE: Personally, I would love to see it included in the main version of the film somehow.  I think it would really tie into the Luke/Biggs reunion before they take off for the Death Star attack.  Unfortunately, I don't know if that footage can be restored to a level on par with the rest of the film.  Also, Luke seemingly acts a little childish and out of character, but what the hell, he's still a farm-boy at that point.  Also, Biggs' has a bad-ass cape and just looks very "Star Warsy."  Finally, change Luke's x-wing line back to "Blasted Biggs, where are you?" to tie it all back together.

For Caveman and anyone else still needing a good torrent link for the DVD-9 version, a good bet would be on kickasstorrents.com.  Just do a search for "Star Wars Revisited."

There should be both a PAL and an NTSC version of the DVD-9.  You'll get an ISO image of the entire disc and can play it through your PC (i use Virtual CloneDrive) or burn it to a DL DVD.
