Demonoid no more???
Time
Hey all,

I always try to check out demonoid, as this is where a lot of the star wars fan edits and star trek/star wars fan films, etc get uploaded. I went to the site to log in today (havn't been on it in like 3 weeks) and it is down...with the following message?

"The CRIA threatened the company renting the servers to us, and because of this it is not possible to keep the site online. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for your understanding.

We have brought online a forum in order to help the community stay together. This forum is not file sharing related in any way, it's just a mean to help the community stay together - please read the forum rules before posting."

Any idea if this is permanent? Is Demonoid done forever? I'm speechless. Does anyone know anything? I don't what else to do to find all the fan productions, and it's not like I can drive to fry's/best buy and buy it (if I could I would, I like shiney proffesional looking dvd's, but you can't, as we know).

If anyone knows anything, please fill this clueless person in.

Why the hell did the lazy Emperor even think Luke would join the dark side and become his new apprentice?!

I don't believe that one bit, actually. There's no reason to believe Luke would ever join the emperor, even if he killed his father, Darth Vader (lol), using the dark side of the force. I'd reckon Luke would rather be killed and tortured by the emperor than join him. Throughout the entire tirlogy there is no indication of Luke descending to the dark side, with perhaps the exception of the philosophic cave meeting that took place in ESB and maybe some of the anti-Obi-wan-ness. If George Lucas wanted us to believe Luke could turn to the dark side, he should have made a better case imo. Still, this is only a very, very minor flaw for me.

Here's my thoughts on it.

Darth Vader was using Lukes thoughts against him to manipulate him into turning to the dark side by giving in to his anger. When he mentions says "you have a twin sister, if you won't turn perhaps she will," that gets to Luke. He goes nuts and gets angry, he is giving in to his anger, making his fail turn. He uses it to make his more powerful, and the result is he ignites his saber and charges vader with anger, knocking him to the ground and cutting off his hand. That's the final turn of Luke. Only when he looks at his fathers robotic wrist stub and then his own robotic hand does he release what he is becoming. His father. By giving into his anger, he is becoming the very person he is trying to save. That's were the emperor had his overconfidence. He didn't see luke stopping like that. Luke showed more inner strength than the emperor thought by reeling himself back in, calming down letting vader live and proclaiming he is a jedi.

I always felt the idea was is he had killed vader in anger, he would be lost and would have turned because he would have fully given in. By stopping just short of it, however, he didn't turn, he showed his inner strength as a jedi. He didn't give in. I think the emperor was so smug because of his overconfidence. That overconfidence is shown by the fact he could not sense the good in vader. Only Luke sensed it. The emperor was so sure of himself, he couldn't sense that little bit left. He was sure Luke would turn with poking and proding. He felt he was like his father in that regard, and once he started the turn he wouldn't stop. Luke, as we know, shoulded him otherwise.

A question, since I know a lot of your stuff is posted to newsgroups (and I have no usenet access and don't ever know how to access it). Is there anywhere else to get the V2 standard dvds (since you recommend them over the V1)? BT, P2P, PiF, B & P, or some other way? I'd love to get them (and the assosicated disc and cover labels).

Thanks in advance.

Info Wanted: Pittrek's "pure" '04 DVD/GOUT hybrid OT project...
Time
I already own the first SE dvd box set that was released, and I heard those DVD's were just the SE and the OOT on the same disc, correct? I've read too on hear that the OOT dvd's sucked and they were a LD transfer and some of the stuff was more messed up than the OOT vhs, etc. If I'm wrong correct me please. Most ppl on here I've read bash em, so I never got them, since I already have the box set and I didn't want to pay $15 per disc for a "crappy" OOT transfer (assuming what I read was true). IDK, after readig that I figured they wouldn't be any better than my original VHS. I admit I never watched em (the GOUT), I only know what I read on here. I'd rather have the true OOT on DVD but from what I've read lucas hacked the releases last sept (plz fill me in if I'm incorrect), so I guess I figured I'd try this.

...on a side note not related to star wars...I figured I'd be ok with VHS on this project since it could come in handy down the road. I have a few other things like barry sanders football games and old U of O football games (that I can't get on dvd) I'd like to transfer to dvd so they don't get worn.

Wookie Groomer's 1080p Star Wars Saga project (Released)
Time
I have a question. Were the ESB, ROTJ and ANH SS all released in split screen, and where all or any of them done in standard 480 NTSC? If so, where can I get them? (I don't have usegroup/usenet access and don't know how to use or access it anyways).

I ask since the HD versions are useless to me. I don't have an HD tv yet (though I plan to get someday, LOL), and I don't have and can't afford an xbox 360 right now, so the dvd5/9 regular NTSC non-hd versions (if they exsist) are my only option right now for watching these. If they arn't available, then I guess I'm SOL, LOL

Anyways, Thanks. The SS sounds neat, I'd like to watch it sometime.

IDK if there's anything like Mediacoder for the mac, but if I have a file that needs realplayer to play(or any Audio or Video file type I don't like), use mediacoder to re-code and convert it into my file type of choice. If there's something like that available, you could try that and avoid real completely.

Info Wanted: Pittrek's "pure" '04 DVD/GOUT hybrid OT project...
Time
okay, I am NOT trying to hi-jack this thread, but since you are all talking about trying to use those 2 source dvd's to make a hybrid of the original...I thought my question is somewhat relevant.

I am not trying to do that, but here is what I am wanting to do. I know the qaulity will not be DVD, but I am ok with that for myself. I have the original VHS tapes from the 80's (with original boxes) of all 3 OOT movies. I'd love to watch them again, as they are still in good shape. The problem is watching tapes wears them out, and I don't want to wear them out since no copy of the OOT is commerically available anymore. I wanted to somehow get/copy/whatever the audio and video from the VHS tapes onto the computer. Once the source material was on the hard drive, I wanted to author them into a dvd (dl if I need to, I don't want to compress as I want to minimize signal loss) and then burn my new authoried dvd so I can enjoy them with causing wear on the tape. My question is how to I start, how the heck do I do this. For DVD programs (some I've used, some just take up space), I think I have DVD styler, DVD flick, PgcEdit, DVDAuthorGUI, NuMenu4U, DVD-Rebuilder (I think I have the free and pro on here), The Film Machine, AVIDemux 2.3 plus, AVI2DVD, GUI for DVD author, DVD Builder (a trial I think), Movica, VobBlanker, and ReAuthorist. I think a few of these might be trails I havn't activated yet (not sure though). I have Mediacoder if it's needed. I might have DVD-Lab laying around here (it may be lost though). I know I've messed around with DVD Styler, DVD Flick, and mediacoder before on a few projects. I've only breifly used PgcEdit.

Anyways, what programs would I need to do this?Anyone that can point me in a direction so I can get a general idea of what I'd doing, I'd appericate it. I'd like to get started on this.

I figured I'd ask in here before I tried the Requests, How-To's, and Technical Discussions forum, since it was kind of relevant (seeing as it is a preservation of the OOT, like this thread, just with different source material).

I have to agree. More than once these dumb moves have ruined something in the star wars universe. Like you said The NJO ruined the expanded Universe. I dimiss all of it completly now, I'm done. The last straw was another skywalker (ok, a solo by name) became a sith. I mean get real, again? WTF...get serious, and give Luke and them a break. You mean to tell me Luke, not obi-wan, yoda or the emperor, was the only one than sensed there was still good in his father, yet he couldn't tell that his nephew was turning or sense anything with Mara??? Plus it's the whole, geez, ANOTHER skywalker bloodline gone bad??? That whole story line ruined the expanded universe. It's just sad to see lucas allowing it to happen again.

Transformers the Movie (1986) - Supplemental Disk (* unfinished project *)
Time
Hey all, I'm a Gen 1 purist. Heck, I still have all the original toys from 1984. Yes, I'm one of those guys, LOL. Needless to say, the movie didn't make me happy then, and really doesn't now.

Why am I posting then? Cuz I had an idea, and If I had to skill to edit it and do a fan edit I would, but I don't.

Basically, I thought it wanted to edit out some things. Edit out prime and ironhide and all the classic Gen 1 charaters deaths. Just make it seem like they got lost in space or something, doesn't matter...expect for the fact they never made it to the autobot city...so they didn't die...

then I'd edit out Megatron and the others being turned into Galvatron, Cylconus, etc they are just created by Unicron.

That's about it. Megatron and his cronies don't die and become someone diff, prime and his guys don't die. They are all lost on the trip to autobot city (al la the Pilot of the series "More than meets the Eye).

Anyways, if Anyone has the skill to do this, feel free to take my idea and run with it. If you don't like the idea, I understand, as I said, I am a Gen 1 purist, so killing them off was sacreligous. I just thought this would be a neat idea, as most ppl I've talked to over the years agree that killing off prime, megatron and company was a stupid move.

As I said, I don't know if anyone has the skill to do this, but if they do...feel free to take the idea and run with it..

With that, I'll get my Gen 1 Purist self out of this thread...

Alright, I edited this post since I did some searching and found the answer to my questions. I have pgcedit, I just havn't installed it (I need to, wow, I have WAY to much editing stuff saved that I need to install).

I found the pgcedit homepage, and read a guide about burning Daul Layer DVD's

It looks like, pgcedit and imgburn are similer in how they select layer breaks. pgcedit just imports the layer break selection to imgburn so it burns it correctly once you've selected it. I noticed pgcedit has highlighted colors which hint to where the original layer break was, and it sounds like it even tells you were it was (though it may suggest something diff). When I tried imgburn, it looked like it didn't suggest anything, though maybe all the layer breaks were the same in it's eyes (no one better than the other). I think I can burn the video_ts straight like I do single layers without pgcedit/iso as long as I choose a good layer break (I just have to figure ut how to choose a good one in imgburn). Of course Pgcedit did show a few neat feature, like previewing the cells and such to see if they are a good spot (which I can't do with imgburn). I think I can burn them without using pgcedit, it just sounds like pgcedit will make the process of choosing a layer break a little easier thanks to features like that.

Anyways, it sounded like the dvd's are authored with layer breaks (since I asked it earlier), as the help guide mentioned if no suitable sectors are found, it will have to be "re-authored," and they talked of the original layer break position.

Thanks for the help. I definatly got me pointed in the right direction!!!

Lucas: I want to know what happened to the prints they sent you?
OOT fan: I don't know what you're talking about. I'm a member of the Hyperspace fan club on my way to buy the newest special edition dvd's for the 8th time in 7 years. I'm looking foward to even more CGI alterations in this release.
Lucas: You are part of the unaltered trilogy alliance who refuse to accept my evolving original vision. Take him away.

That would be a Hilarious spoof, one worthy of the effort.

Help with Burning a DL DVD9

I don't select "don't update ifo/bup files" (I think otherwise the layerbreak/seamless you just selected is ignored and the layerbreak from the ISO is used but I'm not sure).

Thanks. That helps, although I have a new question now. Why do you use PgcEdit to create an ISO first? Why don't you just burn the Video_TS and Audio TS folers straight to disc using Imgburn? That's how I do it with Single layer discs that come in the format of a Video _TS folder. Does it not work right with a Daul Layer disc? This disk is a Daul Layer disc (video_TS foler)

Also, you're last comment touched on a concern of my. I'm assuming the DVD was authoring with a layer break, right? If that's so, why is it making me choose a layer break when I burn it, and if I choose a layer break won't it confuse the DVD player when I play it, since a layer break already existed from when it was authored? (Or I am totally screwed up on this)?

If I had to pick one thing, hmm. Anakin's "turn" to the dark side was crap and has anyways bothered me. I know He'd been "turning" for quiet some time but come on. He just snaps and kills everyone? That was the worst possible way lucas could have had him turn. "On no, I did wrong, so I'll just sell myself to you and go kill everyone including kids." I mean WTF. I suppose it was a fitting turn for the whiny little **** that he is, but still it was annoying. Also, well we're on the scene, I think having Anakin kill Mace Windu like that was crap, the emperor should have killed him in a hard fought battle, not was was essentially a cheap shot. I can think of more things but I'll leave it at that.

Lucas wearing "Han shot first" shirt during Indy IV production
Time
I know this picks up from page 2 and 3, but in regards to Analog broadcasts...the last day for analog broadcasts in the US is Feb 17th, 2009. Here's the government website on it for more info.

Offical Gov DTV website

First off, Digital TV (DTV) isn't HDTV, it just refers to a required digital signal versus analog. Not everything must be broadcast in HD, it just must be broadcast as a ditigal signal. SDTV (standard Def TV) will still exist. As was said, if you have cable or sat tv then this won't really effect you, as it's up to sat and cable broadcasters to decide what they want to do with the signals over their lines and networks.

Over the air will be effected, and in order to view TV signals broadcast over the air, you will need a ditigal TV (SDTV, EDTV, or HDTV) or a ditigal to analog convertor box. The reason for this is the government wants to return the valuable analog spectrum for use by emergancy crews, and some say to "auction it off" to help pay of defict.

this site gives some in depth info on it

Benton Foundation, More DTV Info

Here's the reason for it given on the gov site...

Why are we switching to DTV?

DTV is a more flexible and efficient technology than the current analog system. For example, rather than being limited to providing one “analog” programming channel, a broadcaster will be able to provide a super sharp “high definition” (HDTV) program or multiple “standard definition” DTV programs simultaneously. Providing several program streams on one broadcast channel is called “multicasting.” The number of programs a station can send on one digital channel depends on the level of picture detail, also known as “resolution,” desired in each programming stream. DTV can provide interactive video and data services that are not possible with “analog” technology.

Converting to DTV will also free up parts of the scarce and valuable broadcast airwaves. Those portions of the airwaves can then be used for other important services, such as advanced wireless and public safety services (for example, police, fire departments, and rescue squads).

also from the Gov site...

Once broadcasters transition from analog to digital, will analog televisions will be obsolete?

No. Set-top boxes which convert digital signals to analog signals are available now and will continue to be available at lower prices to consumers as the transition progresses. However, to enjoy the full benefits of Digital TV, including superior sound and clarity, you must own a Digital TV set. An analog television, with the addition of a set-top box, will still allow viewers to enjoy all of the programming they have always enjoyed.

Here's some info-timeline on it from the Benton site...

2007
October 2007 -- September 2009 The NTIA is to make payments of up to $10 million to implement and administer a program through which eligible low-power television stations(6) may receive compensation toward the cost of the purchase of a digital-to-analog conversion devices that enable them to convert incoming digital TV signals of their corresponding full-power television stations to analog format for transmission on the low-power television stations' analog channels. Requests for such compensation must be made on or before February 17, 2009. Priority compensation is to be given to non-profit corporations and stations that serve rural areas of fewer than 10,000 viewers.

2008
January 1, 2008 -- March 31, 2009 US households may obtain $40 coupons towards purchase of digital-to-analog converter boxes by making a request. All coupons expire 3 months after issuance. The NTIA is to ensure that each requesting household receives, via the United States Postal Service, no more than two coupons.

January 28, 2008 The FCC must conduct the auction of the licenses for recovered analog spectrum, commencing the bidding no later than this date, and is to deposit the proceeds of the auction in the US Treasury no later than June 30, 2008.

June 30, 2008 By this date, the FCC is to have deposited in the Treasury proceeds from the auction of spectrum currently used for analog TV broadcasts.

October 2008 -– September 2009 The NTIA is to make payments of no more than $65 million to implement a program to reimburse rural low-power television stations for upgrading to digital TV technology. Such reimbursements shall be issued to eligible stations no earlier than October 1, 2010. Priority compensation will be given to non-profit corporations and stations that serve rural areas of fewer than 10,000 viewers.

2009
February 17, 2009 Analog TV broadcasts from full-power TV stations in the US ends. Low-power stations, including Class A stations, may continue broadcasting in analog format after this day, subject to future decisions by the FCC on how to complete the digital television transition for such stations.

February 18, 2009 By this date the FCC must require that all TV broadcasting occur only on channels between channels 2 and 36, inclusive, or 38 and 51, inclusive (between frequencies 54 and 698 megahertz, inclusive). If low-power stations want to be compensated for digital-to-analog conversion devices, they must make request by end of day.

September 30, 2009 On the last day of Fiscal Year 2009, the Secretary of the Treasury will transfer $7.363 billion from the Digital Television Transition and Public Safety Fund to the general fund of the Treasury.

Basically, this isn't a push for HD, and just because this happens doesn't mean the signals will all be HD. It just means that over the air signals must be digital signals. They'll still sell TV's same as today (SDTV, EDTV, HDTV).

Directly from the gov site...

Is HDTV the same thing as DTV?

No. HDTV is the highest quality of DTV, but it is only one of many formats. In addition to HDTV, the most common formats are Standard Definition Television (SDTV) and Enhanced Definition Television (EDTV).

SDTV is the baseline display and resolution for both analog and digital. Transmission of SDTV may be in either the traditional (4:3) or wide-screen (16:9) format. EDTV is a step up from Analog Television. EDTV comes in widescreen (16:9) or traditional (4:3) format and provides better picture quality than SDTV, but not as high as HDTV.

Anyways, sorry to bring this up from a few pages back, but I noticed a few ppl were talking about it, and I thought maybe this would help clear things up in that department. I hope it helped.

I say forget the OOT on DVD, lets target HD-DVD/Blue Ray Now

Here's my 2 Cents.

I disagree. DIVX was a wasted format. The whole idea of it was completly different than DVD. You didn't own the movies. It was like renting DVD's. You didn't own them. You "bought them," but it was more like a rental, as they'd lock up after a certain number of days and then you had to pay more $$ to unlock them permanently. Even then, it only worked on your player. So if you wanted to take it to a friends, tough luck. He has to pay to unlock it on him player. Nothing in that is a worthwhile paralell.

That is NOTHING like Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. You buy Blu-Ray or HD-DVD and you can watch it on your player, your buddies, etc. You own them. They arn't "locked" like Divx was. They both can be bought and played on any player al la DVD, unlike Divix. There is nothing similer in the comment. The whole idea of HOW Divx worked and the structure was flawed.

Furthermore, both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are viable next gen formats. By that I mean both can output a 1080P picture, both hold lots more data than DVD. Which will win out? So maybe it is Blu-Ray, how knows. So DL Blu-Rays hold 50GB vs 30 GB of DL HD-DVD. HD-DVD has a few things going for it IMO Blu-Ray doesn't. First, I have a DVD player in my car. I have many in the house. I have 5 DVD players + one in the car. If I Buy Blu-Ray, those players are useless. I can't use them for my movie. Maybe I want to watch a movie in the bedroom or another TV, or my friends in my car want to see a DVD on the long trip, with Blu-Ray I have to by the Blu-Ray AND DVD version to be able to use ALL my players. My GPS/DVD/ 5 volt preout Headunit in my Car is worth $2000. I don't want to buy a disk that renders the DVD player in it useless. If I by HD-DVD, gues what? Most HD-DVD disks contain the HD-DVD and the DVDF version. so it will work on ALL my current players AND my HD-DVD one (if I want to see it in HD). That's a BIG plus over Blu-Ray, and one that Blu-Ray can't match. 2nd, Blu-Ray disks are more fraigle and easier to scratch than HD-DVD or DVD. Also, they have to have 2 different Lasers (red and Blue) to be able to read both Blu-Ray disks and DVD's. HD-DVD's only need the one Red laser. Less parts to break, less parts to manufacture, cheaper cost. Also, $300 Blu-Ray by XMAS? I'll believe that when I see it, they are still $800, and the PS3 doesn't count. I went thought 3 PS2's cuz the Laser kept going out. In contrast, I've never had a DVD player laser go out. I am not spending $500 on a PS3 and using it as a Blu-Ray. If it breaks like PS2's were famous for, then I have to spend $500 on a PS3 or $800 on a Stand Alone. If you buy an XBOX with the HD-DVD add on, and the laser goes out, it's $200 more, $300 for a stand-alone.

Maybe Blu-Ray wins out, maybe not. My guess, both will hang around for awhile. I am planning to buy a 1080P 73" mitsu DLP tv in the next year. I am not shelling out that cash for a TV and not buying a player so I can watch a few movies in HD. HD-DVD is cheaper, and a lot of the disks are daul HD-DVD-DVD, so the discs play on regular DVD players. As I said, that's a BIG plus for me, it means I don't have to spend $50 on the Blu-Ray and DVD version, I just by one. HD-DVD is cheaper, and has the pluses I named, that's nothing like Divx. So maybe it looses, and maybe you think I wasted my money. Not me, because it's no more of a waste than the DVD player I bought for $330 back in 99 or 00. The thing still works too, so I got my $$ out of it. With all the things I said above, if I spend $300 on a HD-DVD player and in 3 years the format is dead, I'll have gotten my $$ out of it too.

I agree, if you don't need it now, then wait, as the prices WILL come down, and most ppl don't want to be stuck on the Betamax end of this battle. A more worthwhile comparison would be VHS and Betamax, not DVD and DIVX. However, with me, the things I said above come into play in my choice. Those matter to me, and Blu-Ray can't offer me some of those. Plus, I don't know anyone currently with a Blu-Ray player, but I know several with HD-DVD players (I'm sure there are plenty of ppl with Blu-Ray also, I just don't know any). When I get a Big DLP TV, if I want get an HD format and both formats are available, I'd lean towards HD-DVD due to all the things I mentioned which make a difference to me.

Help with Burning a DL DVD9
Time
Hey all,

I have a question. I am trying to burn a fan film I downloaded for a friend awhile ago. It's in the format of a Video_TS folder. Normally, for single layers, I just add a Audio_TS folder to the same directory, and then burn it using imgburn under the build mode. It works fine for the Single layer discs that come as a Video_TS folder.

However, when I try to burn the Dual Layer fan fil, I downloaded for him, it keeps asking me for a layer break, and wants me to choose one. Wouldn't the DVD have been authored with a Layer break, since it was authored as a DL DVD9 (5.11GB)? It has an option that says "Don't update IFO/BUP files," one for "Seamless," and "ignore layer break options." I know the ignore button ignores all layer break info found and it says it "is not suitable for DL media, so ignore that button. For "Seamless" it says "only enable this option if you know for a fact your player does not need the layer break cell to be marked as non-seamless." For the "Don't Update IFO/BUP files option, it says "only enable this option if the IFO/BUP files have been prepared in advance with the nessessary layer break information."

Last, it lists like 17 options for layer break info. I think I can only choose one. It lists 17 options for me to click under "create layer break." It lists them as a table, with (from left to right) the catgories being "LBA, Padding, %, File/VTS, LU, PGC, Cell, VC/ID, Time, and SPLIP" Honestly, all these numbers and stuff under those doesn't mean a thing to me, and it lists them all as "average"

I am lost at what to do at this point. There are so many options, which seem to be at all different spots on the disc. How do I know what to choose, or is this the wrong program to burn with? I mean, I thought the layer break would have been authored into it, and if thats the case, wouldn't doing this screw that up?

If there's a better program out there to use, please suggest it and how I burn the Daul Layer with it.

I am sorry to ramble on about this, but I have confused and second guessed myself too much. I figured at that point it's better to ask for help.

Thanks to anyone who helps. I am trying to burn this to a disk soon so I can clear some HD space. I'm running out. If it helps, it's the fan film Star Trek- Borg War the Movie (a machinima project).

Been there and done that - the response I got was that they would rather do their own project themselves instead of collaborating.

I agree, why not put out a "volume 1" and a "volume 2" instead of holding onto it until a 2nd disc is created. Also, are you trying to fit it all on a DVD5? In that case, why not put it all on a DVD9 instead of a DVD 5, or use a shinking program like dvdshrink to compress it so the last 5 minutes fit?

I did, originally, make it a volume 1 - but the person I was performing the work for did not like the 'volume 1' moniker. As to using DVD shrink - I think we all know the general quality of the material that most people have for these DVD's and dropping the quality down further would just not be right. I would rather put out the 1st disc as is solo without any follow up. And, hopefully, this could prompt those who state that they are 'making and releasing the ultimate dvd of bonus material' to actually do less talk and more action!

I admit I am not equipped with all the details, and I am sorry if I assumed anything wrong. Please help me out, as I'm still confused. I noticed y ou have a different SN than the original thread starter, and the other person in this thread (NeilB) who wanted to do there own piece. If this the same project as the thread starters, or is this NealB's project, or something differnet?

Either way, I'd love to see you release the work. I understand your DVD shrink thoughts. I just figured 5 minutes wasn't a ton of material to compress. Could you author it for a DVD9 (Dual LAyer DVD)? I'm sure you've thought of that though, but I figured I'd throw it out there.

At any rate, if you want to release it as is, that's still better than nothing. You can always release it as is, not as volume one, and if you ever do a follow up disk (sequel, volume 2, etc), name it as you see fit once you get to that point.

I do hope to see this work though, as it sounded like a great I idea. Here's to hoping you all decide to put it out, even if it's as is.
