Star Wars prequel Box set
Time
It just seems to me that, even in this day and age, it can never be about what the people really want but what some big-shots say we should want. It's about the money nowadays.....
The industry is no longer about making quality films but of making the most money. And still they claim "artistic" rights.
THX 1138 has been released, at least I nearly bought it about five months ago. But I wouldn't put it past GL if he's even started re-doing his films he did for college. He might even try to re-submit them for a higher grade......

Of course GL is the got-to guy for these movies. He exchanged a significant pay-rise for the rights to all merchandise, including the movie rights.....
This is where we get to see the cracks in the system GL worked so hard to bring back to films. I mean, the big studios are more willing to listen to the fans and then release things that they feel the fans would want. Gl just goes on about how these films aren't complete yet. The way he's tinkering with them they never will be....
That is what this is all about, I mean he was a visionary director but he has only directed four times since our '77 favourite. As far as the behind the scenes books and programmes tell, he isn't really at home in the director's chair. Maybe he should spend more time writing since that does seem to be something he is really good at.
GL is basically a victim of his own succes, maybe sometime he will admit it and settle down on these films.

Until then we will have plenty to rip at him....

I must agree with there....

This is not just abot the O-OT this is about the general principal of him tinkering with these films for no apparent reason. I cannot imagine that when making episodes I, II and III he he had to settle for a lesser scene because he didn't have the time or resources to do it properly the first time around. I mean, Gl has the ILM and SS studios at his feet and he still whines about his films not been good enough to release to the public.

Luckily though, they do still sell vcr's and we all have the O-OT on video, and we can enjoy those whenever we like.....

I don't hink that mr Kurtz would willingly let them do it.
I would not at all be surprised if the execs are keeping all the high-profile people out of these loops so as that they can say that they had nothing to do with it.
Wouldn't be the first time either.......

I think chances are that GL has already started looking at what he could do to Yoda in V and VI. Although of course if he does actually go ahead and do it, I for one would be very sad that GL has thrown out part of the so-called magic of film and replaced it by digitilization. Of course CGI is good but it should only be used to supplement what is actually there. CGI will never be able to look as real as any model, never!

If I were a religious man I would pray that GL stops tampering with these films, since he is destroying the legacy he helped to create.

May the force help him.....

Actually, I must agree with you there.....

Without one the other cannot continue. Only now, after the fans have endured for years in their appreciation of these films they are being royaly screwed by a few execs that want to make vast amounts of dosh for themselves and a talented individual that has started to beleive the hype a bit too much. I think it's time the fans got what they deserved and Lucasfilm finally releases the films that the fans want to see, not what some other people want them to want to see.....

Looks like lot of typing ahead of me again.....

Of course Lucasfilm will release a huge box set version. They're not stupid, just like the CPU-wars a few years ago, the companies are releasing everything in small steps so as to make more money for themselves and the development of the new, improved and acceptable versions.

Personally I think Lucasfilm should be ashamed at the 2004 release though..... I mean since around 2001 DVD manufacturers have been looking at ways to make especially box sets enticing to the consumer. Look at the Indiana Jones or Godfather box sets. They look good and definitely look like the studio did more than just bung the stand-alone versions in a piece of cardboard.

Films like Lord of the Rings immediately saw the benefit of this type of marketing, I mean those collectibles are really quality items that add to the consumers enjoyment of the product. Star Wars the films that changed the world of filmmaking just get a two-piece cardboard sleeve. Hurray Lucasfilm (NOT!!!). Unfortunately since the studios moved into the hands of corporations somewhere in the sixties, they aren't really concerned about quality just about making the next hit film which make millions for them. Somewhere along the line we seem to forget that this system is only fair when you are on top of it. We little people are being given our little snippets of film to keep us occupied so we don't remember about the things that are wrong around us. Starting to sound a bit like Star Trek but.... it should have a valid point.

Sometime in the next decades there will come along a new film that will push the boundaries of possibilities and vision, and only the versions we ourselves choose to preserve will be remembered,

Choose wisely....

Having only just joined I thought I should keep somewhat of a low profile....

Okay, about this blasted scene again, somehow it always comes back to just this one scene. While we were busy checking the original versions we completely missed all the other, often rather fake looking, changes GL made to these films. I mean how many X-wings is a small rebel outpost meant to have???? Originally maybe two dozen, digitally all of a sudden they have more X-wings than there are TIE-Fighters in the whole first film.
ESB goes on with this farce when running through Cloud City all of a sudden nearly every wall has become a window. Continuity is definitely lost here due to the fact that the backdrops were not coordinated properly and thus are just additions made GL just for the sake of saying: "Look I've changed more than just the models, I've added a completely new backdrop to show that it is necessary for me to release these films again."
This, of course, is not a quote.

Somehow GL seems to think that artistic license is more important than what the fans feel. Having bought the the trilogy box set on DVD, I proceeded to watch the documentaries. Here it is clearly stated that if it weren't for the fans making such a big deal of all this before Star Wars was even released, there would have been no incentive for people to go and see this film. Therefore Star Wars is not solely the artistic property of GL but, I would say, that the fans have more rights to decide about the fates of these masterpieces than this genius that seems to have gotten too used to the idea of being called a genius.
George, get over it. Not all your films are brilliant but you do have talent. Don't waste it because you want to be the spoiled brat that has to have it his way because he sees it like that.

Of course, please don't get me started on my views of the PT.........

Well,

Having only just found out about this when us europeans are just being told that these will also be available, I do have some comment on the press release that I read on this very site. It is indeed very insightful into how the american mega-corporations choose to conduct their bussiness.
People don't seem to realise that they are being misled by the PR-departments. Not their fault since PR gets played like a fiddle anyway....

Do we really want to accept that the trilogy that has probably grossed more worldwide than anything ever will never be released in the way that it was meant to be enjoyed. People talk about the artistic rights of George Lucas, which in my humble opinion he wavered when he decided to release Episode I, but he has to accept that it is no longer his vision but a part of our cultural heritage.
Everywhere you go there's always somebody who, in any situation, can make at least a quick reference to Star Wars. I grew up as the generation that only got to see it on tv or video, now we got our moment with the Special Editions.

If only he had stopped there. Would Rembrandt have changed the "Nachtwacht" just because he could make more money by repainting it every few years??? I don't think so... Artistic vision is not to be found in the creator, but in the beholder. It was generally accepted that most artists were only recognized after their deaths, GL shows now what a chaos would have ensued if this had not been so....

In closing, I will leave you a forbidding feeling that sometime in the not too distant future, Lucasfilm ltd. will release an ultimate edition box set comprising of all six movies including the original versions we all loved on their very own discs. Probably even accompanied by an extra disc for a least each trilogy or maybe even one per movie.....

As long as I have my VCR I can enjoy the movie that means something to the arts.....
