I will be changing this line to just "young Skywalker". I would have preferred it to be "Luke Skywalker" but no where in the saga does the Emperor say "Luke"

I have a vague recollection that in one of the exclusive bonus disc (The music of Star Wars or something like that) Ian McDermaid did say Luke Skywalker in one of the segue dialogs. I may be wrong, but a friend of mine had the disc and I only say it one. Plus the tone and inclination of that particular "Luke" might not work. But maybe its something to check into.

In addition Ady NEVER solicits for help when an HD, etc crashes . It's always a kind memebr of the community who askes "Hey can we help out with that?" But even so it may be wiser to make those offers via PM.

I don't understand why anyone would tamper with the original trilogy to make it better fit the prequals, when it should clearly be the other way round.

+1

You don't need to show and explain everything to the audience. Dream sequences are the paramount of cheese and in Empire it would be redundant since Luke explains wait he sees. Part of what made the Force so cool in the OT was it was mysterious.

I dunno, Blu-Ray seems to be having tons of issues with the fact they are a uncomplete format. BD 1.1 and 2.0 and all that jive. I do know that the main feature will play irregardless of player, but if you want to see those great bonus features that require 20 more gigs of space, then you should hold out for a 2.0 player.*

*Now I await to be jumped on by Sony fanboys.

I guess you can label me a fanboy, but this is how the current market is.... Blu-ray is the heavy odds on favorite to win. After Warner's defection they now have 70% of studio support including Sony, Disney, Warner, and Fox. HD-DVD currently has Paramount and Universal. Over the last year BR has sold software at 2:1 ratio with HD-DVD. After the Warner announcement the ratio jumped up to 5:1(only one week of data available thus far). Toshiba's response was cutting their player prices once again... but it doesn't look like people are taking the bait.

The much ballyhooed profile mess from 1.0->1.1->2.0.... Supposedly all players even 1.0, will be able to play the movie itself. Those with 1.1 or higher will be able to see picture in picture commentaries. 2.0 adds web"enhancements" like be able to download ring tones or whatever. Its up to you if those extras are worth worrying about.

Even so the PS3 is 1.1 compatible right now and at CES they re-affirmed that'll they be able to update to 2.0 later this year via firmware update. So the PS3 is pretty much future proof. And like I said earlier it is one nice piece of hardware.

Just to flame proof this post I don't like any particular electronics corporation... they all suck in general ($ony, Micro$oft, To$hiba, etc). I first bought an HD-DVD add on for my 360 and it was pretty nice, but I sold it when I saw how the format war was becoming more and more heavily favored on the Blu-ray side. I buy things that I find will fit my needs.. I don't really think any emotional investment towards electronics equipment is particularly healthy.

Hey Ady,

More comments from the peanut gallery
First off thanks again for sharing this with the community. When watching this it made me remember why I loved Star Wars when I was growing up.

Things that worked really well: vader/obi duel (nice in intensity but not over the top), the cantina critters, the DS battle for the most part, as well as the new HUDs and other displays/schematics. All the changes tended to be nice and subtle.

As for constuctive crits:
I agree with some of the other folks that the severed hand needs some work because at first I didn't quite get what you were going for until I replayed it in slow motion. Right now it kind of looks like a dark plastic mitten.. The hand although hairy is much easier to identify with for the audience.

I absolutely loved the DS sequence except for the TIE reveal because it completely messes up with the pacing. You start out with a super frantic firefight which I think is fantastic, but then its slowed down by the slow reveal of the tie fighters and the introduction of the imperial march. Since you include the imperial march you had to reuse some reaction shots of pilots as fill-in footage to match musical cues. Once you got back to the original soundtrack, pacing picked up again. It might be better if you keep the original soundtrack in and just have the tie reveal in the same amount of time. The final DS explosion seems a little weak compared to the new beefier Alderan explosion.

But even so the entire film as a whole is pretty close to what I wanted of the special editions so congrats and thanks again.

Originally posted by: adywanWell i would recommend the PS3. In terms of picture quality the PS3 is amazing for both bluray & DVD. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to test out a couple of bluray players, a samsung and philips, and quality wise they were really inferior to the PS3. the price was slightly more than the PS3 at the time and i just couldn't justify the extra bucks for worse quality. After all not only do you get a player but also a great games console (even though the games available at the moment are pretty crappy). i also think that some of the 1.0 profile players can be upgraded to 2.0 through a firmware update.

I really dig my PS3... its a great Blu-ray/DVD player... ok game machine... way sweet media center for streaming movies and music from your pc. You get a lot of bang for only $400 USD

For all the talk of BR discs that exceed 30Gbs, I'd love to see a comparison of the space taken up by the actual film itself, to see if a movie from a 30+Gbs release actually uses a better encode/bitrate, or if the extra space is simply being taken up by extra features.

The examples that I stated earlier were the movie-only file size.. the extras were not included.

I think this is what MBJ has been getting at. Once HD-DVD is gone, what makes you think the studios are going to use a higher bitrate? They have no incentive to do that. "We'll get better picture quality!" The studios don't care. All they care about is making money. With HD-DVD gone, that'll be one less expense. Why bother with going with a higher bitrate when the picture looks fine as it is?

Actually studios do care when the consumer cares. When DVDs first came out they many were still P&S, or if you were lucky 4x3 letterboxed. Today DVDs are almost all anormorphic widescreen (minues the GOUT of course). Studios are not friends-- they are direct competitors. I'm thrilled that the format war caused many good things... rapid player price drops, dumping of MPEG2, BOGO sales, etc. But just like DVD, when there is a lone HD format, studios will continue to innovate... at least to double dip from early adopters

Exactly how many movies do you know of that use all 30Gbs, much less 50Gbs?

Here are just a couple:
Apocalypto - 34.6 GB
Casino Royale - 35.2 GB
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (with seamless branching) - 37.3 GB
Face/Off - 35.8 GB
The Fifth Element - 37.7GB
Flags of Our Fathers - 35.3 GB
Hellboy - 39.4 GB
...

for a lot more Link
All of the ones I listed were AVC encoded

Even so, it's debatable whether there's a notable quality difference, but more space is more space. Plus BR has higher data throughput which is also nice to have. The extra space is very nice to have for extra long movies (LotR) or seemless branching(dare to dream SW).

I don't get the die hardness of fanbois on either side... it a fricken video format -who the hell cares. I'm excited that BR is very close to becoming the standard, so I can just enjoy movies not worry which format to choose because Studio X supports Format Z. Here's hoping Universal and Paramount can join the fold soon.

Wow! That sounds great! Shame I prob'ly won't be gettin' it soon, see, since my dad's been outta work since July, and money's very tight.

There won't be any money changing hands for this edit. As Fendon said, i am doing this for free.

That's sounds great and all, but the question isn't what you charge, but how much shipping is gonna cost. I live in the States, and I'm concerned that shipping might be too much for my family's meager income. How bad is it? The Weasleys would consider themselves fortunate. That's how bad it is.

One way or the other, though, I'm definitely dying my milk blue when I watch this!

MTFBWY!

There will be plenty of people State-side who will get this eventually... so shipping will be like a dollar or two. If you're patient and polite, I'm sure you'll be able to get a copy. Just wait a couple of weeks after it's released and then start asking for copy. People here love to help out fellow fans.... usually they pay the shipping out of their own pocket since collecting 2 bucks from paypal isn't worth the effort.

Question, ady, when you finally completed this edit have you thought about maybe mailing a copy to Lucasfilm, LTD with a list of all the changes you made and why you made them? Perhaps adding a polite letter with some constructive criticism to Mr. Lucas as to why he didn't make these changes himself with all the money, power, and resources at his command.

That is an exceptionally bad idea. Lucasfilm has been pretty leanient and gracious to the Fan Edit community. They could easily send a Cease and Desist order to Ady or anyone doing a fan edit that is planning on being released to the community. Sending in a copy of the edit could sour the relationship greatly. I'm sure sooner or later Lucas will get a copy via someone from within Lucasfilm...maybe lurkers.. or maybe even contributers to these boards.

Star Wars DVD Covers

Coov made different leather versions.. hope this is the one you wanted. They were slightly modified for my own purposes. I made them into slim case covers. I also made inserts and disc labels in the same theme. The disc labels themselves come in different versions because I had some trial and error to get dark and blue saturation levels to match with my particular printer and printable dvds. Feel free to use them or not.
