⭐ Star Wars' 50th anniversary in 2027 ⭐ | Your hopes and expectations (if any)...
Time

i’m so glad that they’re pulling back on the dnr for this, probably the worst thing about the special editions to me is the dnr they applied to the hd home releases. atp i think preservations might pivot to respecializations rather than despecializations, as there are a moderate amount of good changes the SEs made (alongside the awful ones)

They’re really not at all apparent. It’s just that most of the home media releases (especially the gout) were very low-contrast, which made the matte lines more apparent. A modern grade would make them totally invisible.

does 4k80 count as one of those? the garbage matte seams were really obvious to me when watching on a pc monitor (especially in sequences like luke hanging on the antenna in esb).

If you had to make at least one SE change
Time

i’d use a body double and a miniature or cg set to replace luke falling in ESB with something more dynamic. maybe start tilted up, then tilt down to follow luke as he falls, kinda like the “i hate it when he does that” bit in ep2.
the original effect in esb always looked atrocious to me even with recomposites, luke’s movements and the perspective of everything always felt off to me (esp after i became a 3d artist)

Okay, what did we LIKE about the Special Editions?
Time

first off, ian mcdiarmid as palpatine in ep5. sure, the lighting sucks and the effect looks a bit too modern, but mcdiarmid’s performance is a genuine improvement on revill’s monotone and reserved voice.

second, cloud city. all the cgi fits in very well with the artstyle of the matte paintings, and they help to add visual variety compared to “here’s 20 winding white corridors, you figure out where the gang are”

third, victory celebration. yub nub sounds like crap imo, and feels too small to end a trilogy on.

fourth, the recompositing of everything. the reasons for this should be obvious.

overall, i find the special editions to be underwhelming due to how a lot of the worst effects (like the bluescreen in jedi, the jumpcuts in anh, some trench run shots in anh, and luke falling in esb) stayed without much improvement. i would’ve loved if the cgi budget was used for that instead of adding flashy tech demo stuff into mos eisley.

Han Shoots First - Any valid reason to not have Han shoot first?
Time

i’d do it by having greedo’s blaster be empty or misfire, then both han and greedo laugh before han quickly shoots him.

side note, i’m honestly not the biggest fan of the original han-shoots-first, and that’s entirely due to how you don’t see han shoot. all you see is greedo exploding and falling on the table, so it gets kinda confusing.
