LOTR: The Rings of Power Spoiler Thread

Bro that last episode was so good! I loved all the action, and the long cuts, and the practical orcs! It was great! I personally didn’t mind the gore, but my wife did. She had to look away a few times.

At this point, I don’t at all think Halbrand is Sauron. He has grown too much into his own sympathetic character. It would be really strange from a Tolkien perspective to have Sauron almost rehabilitated… and then turn back to the dark.

Adar being a Gen 1 Orc was interesting, it explains his whole deal, though I feel like he should look more deformed for it to really land.

I loved this most recent episode! Everything with Elrond and Durin is just MWAH so good.

I’m not sure how I’m feeling about Adar. I’m pretty sure that he’s not Sauron at all, but just some elf, but then also like… why? On that storyline though, the slow-motion run through the forest was a little much. It felt so dramatic for nothing to happen. Definitely should be sped up in any eventual edit.

My understanding of the numbering is really a matter of circumstance. Sauron was able to steal 16 rings from the elves and his thought was the enslave the dwarves. He gave as many rings to the dwarves as they would take, but the One Ring had no power over them, just made them more greedy and desiring if riches.

So, with all that he had left, the Nine, he gave them to men. And that was when the rings actually worked and the Kings became Wraiths.

I don’t know, maybe Hal9000 has a better understanding of this than I

Getting back on track, I really think that one of the simplest edits would be to cut the bullying from the opening sequence.

You could start the same, even include the other kids not believing that the boat could sail, but then instead of the rock throwing, cut straight to Finrod saying “It was a good boat.” I’d also suggest trimming his line about not always being there, since it foreshadows too much. Instead, go from “you must learn to discern them yourself” to saying that their parents need them to head home.

Small changes; big difference in keeping “paradise” feeling like paradise.

I really like this idea. The bullying felt out of place to the story, but the scenery was so beautiful!

Not to add fuel to the fire and run away, but the LOTR trilogy ain’t 100% Tolkien faithful either. Faramir’s character was completely changed, entire chunks of the book were removed, and rolls were completely swapped out.

I wouldn’t be surprised that if those movies came out today the outcry would be massive. I can almost see the YouTube thumbnails photoshopping Greta Thunberg’s face over Arwen and Eowyen.

Conversely, if this show came out in 2008, I challenge the notion that the backlash would be the same.

The cry for Tolkien purism may be true to some, the PJ movies had that cry (although so quiet in the discourse) but it just seems like a shield to criticize diverse casting and female main characters.

If your claim is that it’s “not Tolkien’s story,” then you probably shouldn’t be watching any LOTR adaptation.

Also, to address the controversy: don’t think I didn’t notice how wrong some of the characters look. I get that it’s an adaptation and not strictly adhering to Tolkien’s vision, but characters like Durin’s wife take me completely out of the world; JRR would be spinning in his grave if he knew that the world would one day be forced to behold a clean shaven Dwarf.

I am way more optimistic than I was before while watching this.

The first episode was so slooow! It was beautiful to look at and I was happy for fantasy that wasn’t filled with sex and nudity, so any shortcomings in pacing and accuracy I can overlook. I understand the need for set up, but it was just a bit too much.

The second episode was great for me! The interpersonal dynamics between the characters was great! I’m really curious who Meteor Man is. The obvious choice is Gandalf, and I’m okay with that.

Well, as usual I’m apart from the board on this. I thought that was a fantastic episode. Much better than the two before. Ben and Leia walking along in the mining area at the start was perfect. That little girl is a perfect little kid Leia and Ewan really is the best he’s been yet, here or prequels (what little I know about them). Obi Wan just works much better as an older, weathered hermit. I’m assuming it’s because that’s who he was for me when I first met him. For me, all of that first half of the episode worked really well. As a friend of mine pointed out, this is a lone wolf and cub story now and the sparse production value suits this character-driven style really well. No complaints here.

As has been the case since 1980, I just don’t find Vader interesting. In 77 he was a second or third tier military member and suddenly in 1980 he was this omnipotent super human who everyone fears and answers to. He’s that here also but he’s been that way for so long, I just roll with it.

James Earl Jones sells it and he sounds every bit as deep and strong as the 77 version. It worked really well. Also, his choice not to over explain (Vader, in-universe) works perfectly for their scenes together. Adding to the depth is their sword fight being the slower and heavier non-spinning, non-behind the back silliness of the Prequels.

That fight looked and felt like a 1977 fight. That made me very happy. As soon as little Leia ran into Reva, I thought “well, here goes the credits/cliff hanger”. Damn. I wanted more.

Which brings me to my last thought for tonight. Just like that, Reva is a deeper more realistic character. I thought she was a cardboard cutout baddie in #1 and #2 and suddenly she’s well rounded, believable, and more interesting.

I’ll probably watch this again in a few minutes. Yes, I thought it was that strong.

+1

I agree with you on all points.

This episode legitimately had me and my wife stunned emotionally and broken to the point where we needed to watch an episode of the office to get our heads back together. It was so tragic!
