And as far as the PT is concerned. The only scene's that are redeemable to me are when Liam Neeson is talking to Watto. Watto is the only CG character IMHO that is actually interesting and Liam Neeson talks to him as though he is really on set. I would put those scenes on par with how Mark Hamill acted around the Yoda puppet in TESB and ROTJ.

I wouldn't. Liam and Watto have nothing important going on between them - Hamill (and the muppet) had to carry much more emotional weight in their scenes.

Good job at attempting to start an argument in a feel-good thread.

Unless you're trolling. In which case 1/10 since I responded.

I love the scene where Owen, Beru and Luke are eating dinner and Owen tells Luke that he actually knows who Obi-Wan Kenobi was.

It seems to open Luke up to a whole world he never imagined before. All of a sudden old Ben may know someone named Obi-Wan who knew his father.

And the fact that Owen quickly ends the conversation and then shares worried looks with Beru makes it all the more powerful.

That scene has some quality acting in it for just being a SITTING AND TALKING scene.

Just now need to find the other "last hope" mentioned in ESB, or maybe just let that go.

 LUKE: Yoda spoke of another.

OBI-WAN: The other he spoke of... is your father.

LUKE: (realizing it himself) There is good in him.

OBI-WAN: Yoda never saw your father after he had fallen. I did. I could see the change in his eyes. When Darth Vader was born Anakin Skywalker was no more. The good man who was your father had been destroyed.

Presumably the pile of dead stormtroopers at the hands of the good guys was considered a bit off-putting?

It was probably cut because Palpatine just told Luke he had set a trap. Why would you let a dozen guys get shot if you're expecting the Rebels to enter that way?

It's like that scene in Lethal Weapon where everyone is expecting Gary Busey's character to show up at Danny Glovers house yet they let those two cops get shot up for no reason.

I'm going to start with #10

I agree with this whole-heartedly. That scene always fell flat because it's a major reveal(Luke is Leia's brother) (Vader is ALSO Leia's dad) and yet it goes nowhere, only to be mentioned at the very end just so Han can get the girl and not have to worry about Luke sipping at his Kool-Aid.

Now #7

I never saw any of these movies until Christmas of 1995 for the "last time" release. Even as 10 year old I thought Luke saying there was good in his father was pulled out of thin air. For the trilogy to end vader didn't have to be redeemed. Luke could have just destroyed him and then took out the Emperor and verything could have been hunky-dory. I'm not saying I dislike the redemption angle, it's just that as it is, it does feel shoe-horned in.

#5

DEATH STAR II. They could have filled that slot with anything they wanted, another super weapon, a massive star destroyer facility, anything.

Hell, it could have been a massive Imperial shipyard orbiting Endor. The Empire could be mining raw materials from the moon. This would piss the Ewoks off and give more of a reason for them to join with the Rebels.

#1

That "certain point of view" schtick was unnecessary. Are we really supposed to believe that Obi-Wan honestly thinks that Anakin Skywalker died when Darth Vader was born? Because if that's not what he believes then why give that speech in the first place. He could have just flat-out told Luke that he wasn't ready to hear the truth yet. What would Luke have done, rushed to face his father as a completely untrained farmboy? Obi-Wan could have even admitted that maybe he was wrong for holding the information from him. It would have given more honesty to his character to admit error to Luke and would lead in nicely to admitting error in training Anakin.

Obviously I don't mind a little deviation from the topic but this is just getting silly.  I'm sure a DVD vs. BR (:p) thread in another section of the forum would be better for this discussion.

Watch your fingers!

Um...on topic...well if Star Wars were properly released on the discs made with blue lasers now replacing DVDs, I would be motivated to get a player for such discs. Since they weren't, I'm not. Maybe I should also go ahead and find those 2006 DVDs.

Good luck. Amazon stopped selling them so I hear. But yeah, back on topic...  The only movie out of the six that looked really good was TPM.

And as far as ANH goes, you can really tell the color timing is off during the shootouts. In the original versions the screen would flash red, now I get these cringe inducing purple flares going off.

You all might not have noticed, but your brain did. :)

I sort of understand that cthulhu1138.

I'm a gamer too, so HD has been the norm for me since 2005. I just can't imagine going without it for so long. I wouldn't be able to do like you are. Supposedly super-hd will arrive around 2020-2025.

That seems like a long wait even when I've been all HD for 6 years now.

It's not that I don't notice the difference. I do. I just don't see 1080p as that much of a leap forward.

HD television looks 1000x better that old crappy analog TV but when it comes to DVD I just don't see enough difference to go out and buy a BluRay player.

Everyone says if you sit really close to the screen, you can see the difference. But seeing how I never do that...

Aw' Hell, I'll get one for my birthday in November. You guys haveconvinced me.

It strikes me as strange (even completely ironic) that there are people in here that don't care for Blu-ray. This seems like a forum where everyone is FOR movie preservation and the "best quality" in film. I've been for both for years.

I wouldn't be surprised if this were the general public, but this a film forum. Isn't it?! I bought my first HDTV at 22 in 2005. I recently bought one of the new 46" 1080p Aquos that has a higher contrast ratio than a freak'n plasma. The difference between Blu-ray and DVD on it is night and day. It's not even close.

When it comes to audio, I'm surprised by any real film fan that doesn't have at least 5.1 in their home. I bought my first 5.1 system when I was 18 and working at a tshirt company for $7 an hour.

Having 5.1 has been a necessity since I've been old enough to afford my own surround sound (17). So I'm with you there.

I don't have a BluRay player for one reason. It's honestly not much of an improvement. Don't get me wrong, I notice a difference, it's just that 1080p isn't all that good when I can down... um... AQUIRE 4k rips of Tron Legacy and others.

And to be honest I told myself I wasn't going to get a BluRay player until STAR WARS came out. And since STAR WARS was released in 1977 and all I've been offered is some direct-to-video remake from 2011 I see no point in investing in Blu-Ray.

Now if GreenRay comes out in a few years offering 4k resolution then I will buckle down and buy one. But not until then.

                                     THE PHANTOM MENACE

Turmoil is at the fringes of the Galactic Republic. The Axis, a wicked horde of systems, has placed a blockade of deadly battleships around the sovereign planet of Naboo.

The alarming chain of events concerning this unmotivated aggressive act has led to endless debate amongst the congress of the Republic.

Hoping to resolve the matter quickly, the Supreme Chancellor has dispatched two Jedi Knights, the guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy, to settle the conflict….

Or just more Lucash wankery and tweaking of the image with computers.

This is in every version. I always thought it was a just a special effects mistake.

Maybe as they were recording the falcon minature they caught something at the edge of the frame, then when they spliced it onto the asteroid background it carried over.

It looks like a small moon inside the asteroid.

of course it might not be a moon...

it could be a space station.

The high trees actually might help. Something to alter it from being typical Earth generally is interesting. As Bingowings pointed out, the desert in ANH had two suns and more than one moon unlike Earth.

Thinking about it, I probably am very biased since I live about an hour away from some of the forests used in ROTJ... That's probably why they seem so un-exotic. :)

Thank you for seeing the point behind my post.

I don't think George Lucas has the entire world in mind exactly when he makes these movies, but it still doesn't change the fact that when I was deployed to the desert in 2006 I couldn't help but notice that all the smaller towns all looked like Mos Eisley.

Those people must have thought Tatooine was really boring when they saw STAR WARS

First of all, I wanted a different environment than Endor. Yes, I do see how this could be interpreted as being PT-ish, but by exotic, I meant somewhere not common on Earth. A New Hope has great deserts featured in it and Empire Strikes Back has an icy wasteland and a swamp. Perhaps ROTJ could have not just stuck to what looked like a typical forest. Maybe another swampland was a good idea or possibly a volcanic planet (which would have been shot on some mountains with lava/volcanoes matted in, NOT on a green screen).

You're forgetting one thing. These movies are for multi-cultural audiences. Many of those cultures saw the desert as COMMON. Others saw Hoth as common (although probably not as many). The only real exotic environments were Dagobah and bespin because they are the only two that don't actually exist.

Well... and the Death Stars but we got a second one of them in ROTJ so that was sorta lame.

There would be no second Death Star. Instead I would have had an Imperial drydock where warships are being mass produced. It would still be above Endor and the Empire would be mining the moon to death for raw materials.

The whole rescue Han scene would be the same (although less muppety and more Heavy Metal feeling) and would still be sort of light hearted.

Afterward Han and Lando would reconcile their differences aboard the Millennium Falcon after they depart Tatooine

Only when Luke speaks to Yoda it is revealed that Luke only made the rescue plan so convolted was to impress leia with his new found Jedi prowess. Luke realizes he has done wrong after Yoda has died.

When Ben tells Luke about his father he gives him the "certain point of view speech" but asks Luke if he would really have wanted to know.

"What would you have done with that information, Luke? Would you have rushed to face him then as you did for your friends?"

Ewoks would still be there only because I love the sort of whimsical quality they bring the film what with friendly forest creatures helping to take down a dark sorcerer (Palpatine).

And I would have Han and Leia marry before the Alliance briefing scene. Then when Luke shows up he is in shock. This would make the relationship very tense but he finally realizes what he has to do. Be bids Leia goodbye and goes to face his father.

just my $0.02

This is good.

 Thanks.

THIS IS WHAT I POSTED ON THE STAR WARS FACEBOOK PAGE

So does anyone else remember when Jabba the Hutt was only in Return of the Jedi? Or when Ian McDiarmid wasn't in The Empire Strikes Back? Or how about when Greedo shot first? To be honest, I don't mind what revisionist actions George Lucas takes with his movie saga. I'm saddened however that no one, not even the creator, cares about restoring the original STAR WARS and releasing it with the best possible picture and sound quality on BluRay. I am displeased and heart broken. The movies on these BluRays are not what I grew up with.

AND THIS WAS THE REPLY I GOT

I am 25 and grew up with the special editions. So I am not heartbroken myself. As far as no originals- no one really cared to buy the 2006 DVD set which contained the original. So Lucas is kinda justified.

http://www.facebook.com/#!/StarWars

feel free to scroll down the list. My name is Jeremy Duane Clements. The message is next to a picture of the VHS's from '95.

Feel free to add me as a friend.

New Theory: Steven Spielberg Ruined Star Wars

It is also assumed that George Lucas thought to himself after Raiders had come out that people weren't interested in the story, all they wanted was the spectacle.

George thought that people just wanted the roller coaster ride and weren't all that worried about the writing.

I guess he just never assumed that movies should have to worry about replay value.

He's even said that he knew the special effects in the original STAR WARS wouldn't stand up to repeat viewings.

Once again, he's not worried about replay value.

How would you have done the Prequel Trilogy?
Time

I always liked the idea of the clone army being this big Sith conspiracy. However, the way it is presented makes the Jedi look like idiots for not ever finding out. I would make a minor change to the end of AOTC. Obi-Wan, Mace and Yoda realize now that Dooku is a Sith and impersonated Sifo-Dyas to the Kaminoans in order to create the army. The scene would play out as follows.

OBI-WAN

Dooku was strong with the dark side. I believe he is this Tyrannus person the bounty hunter spoke of. In that case he must also have been impersonating master Sifo-Dyas. Dooku ordered this new clone army.

YODA

The one to delete the Kamino file he must have been.

MACE

Why would the Sith Lords do this?

YODA

Intricate their plans are. For certain one thing is, they need a war.

OBI-WAN

And the Republic couldn't fight without troops. If what he told me on  Geonosis was true, about a Sith Lord hiding in the senate, then this war is a Sith operation with Tyrannus on one side and Sidious on the other. This is a plot aimed at us. At the Jedi; to bleed us dry. To make us into something we were never intended to be.

Mace lowers his head in agreement.

OBI-WAN

I know you’ll both agree the Sith have succeeded in doing at least that.
