Actually, I'm definitely doing the BD now but it will come out later than the AVCHD and MKV, because it will need some work to make a BD release worthwhile.

Is the AVCHD and MKV going to be the same bitrate and quality as the BD?

Well that's surely possible. What you, Harmy, could do is to encode the video stream using settings for BD compliancy. You can also take this video stream and mux it straight into mkv. You'll only need to make two encodes then, one for BD and mkv and the second one for AVCHD (both 2pass ideally).

CRF is more ideal than 2pass ;)

An idea came to mind earlier: have you considered "regraining" ? Aside from giving it more of an authentic classic aesthetic, it'd sort of alleviate a big issue with the 2004 Lowry masters which is the grain freezing they suffer from. Grain will stop moving and start moving in the background and it's sort of jarring.

GrainFactory3 for Avisynth seems to produce realistic looking grain unlike most artificial grain filters. Also, you could layer on some heavier fake grain to sections that use the GOUT to detract from the lowres murkiness I suppose, could give it a "once lost footage but recovered from worn elements" look to it. Maybe.

But, this really isn't a suggestion, just more of an idea because I know it will affect compression efficiency in a negative way and doesn't add detail or anything. It's basically just adding noise to the video that looks like grain. But I thought I'd throw the idea out there.

Probably, yes. When it comes to encoding this, I'm gonna need some advice by some more knowledgeable members here to make sure everything is as it should be to be compatible.

My recommendation is that for the MKV, break compatibility for the sake of quality and compression efficiency. That is, except for software encoders. Go for 16 refs, 16 bframes, any other specialized non-compatible good setting x264 has, etc. This will break the decoding compatibility for pretty much everything except software encoders on a PC, but it will improve the quality and bitrate efficiency by a significant amount. I also recommend ditching the 2pass bitrate for the more advanced CRF setting, which produces unpredictable filesizes because it analyses the video and gives it the bitrate it needs for the specified value.

If people need hardware compatibility (DXVA etc) then they can get the AVCHD and play it on their PC, no? :)

Anyways, I know my way around x264 pretty well so I can probably help with any compression questions you may have. I also recommend ditching any encoding GUI and going for frequently updated commandline builds which in addition to being more frequently updated also give you full control of what settings to mess with and tune. I use JEEB's custom build @ x264.fushizen.eu

Also, since you're going to be using MKV, you could include fun stuff like soft subtitles of the original English version for multiple languages, multiple language tracks in a more effective compressed format like OGG or AAC (=good quality+not much space taken up), and a lossless FLAC encoded audio file of the 2.0 Laserdisc mix that's used as the basis for the 70mm recreations. I also think you should softsub the Greedo subtitles unless you're making them look very specific. But even then, .ass/ssa subs (+Aegisub editor) have a lot of features and allow you to use various fonts and move the subtitles around the frame on a per-line basis, etc. I do anime stuff so that's why I know a lot about encoding, subs, and containers. :D

Unrelated question but for the 2.0, are you still using recompressed sources (HDTV/BD rips etc) or untouched sources (BDMVs, HDTV transport streams, and such) ? I haven't been keeping up with 2.0 much unfortunately. :(

Whose arm?
Time

The blood is supposed to be there. The entire scene is a homage to a scene in Kurosawa's Yojimbo (which plays out almost identically), which also cuts to a shot of a bloody arm.

If anyone has a copy of Yojimbo and didn't catch it when watching it or haven't watched it yet, it happens about 19 minutes in.

OFFICIAL: Library of Congress had original prints replaced with 1997 SE
Time

I find it a little interesting that the theatrical versions of something as huge, popular, and impactful as the SW OT becoming lost films is closer to reality than one would think.

Will film historians in a hundred years or so be searching for any surviving Technicolor print of Star Wars, and the best quality bits and chunks of ESB and ROTJ to put together? Hmm..

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

Pros for laserdisc over vhs and dvd.  No region code and no macrovision.

Pros over Blu ray no drm.

Hacks or ways to bypass macrovision and dvd region lockouts were taken care of though not necessarily legal under USA laws.

Blu ray could have been without region codes or lockouts but Sony and some studios did not want that because of reverse importation.

While a Blu ray movie that is in region A say a japan release will also work in the USA, a Blu ray pS3 game will not.

All PS3 games are region free though. /offtopic

Is anyone having a problem with AOTC? During the part where Anakin finds Shimi, there is a momentary glitch on mine where the picture goes all blocky and pixelated for a second. I've tried it on another player and it seems to be the disc rather than my player.

It's not a huge disruption but it's not something I'd expect from a product I paid $80 for.

Sounds like a bad pressing. Return/exchange it.

"Many Gungans will be killed" Why is Quigon so unconcerned about the deaths of Republic pilots/anybody who participates in the battle.

Because that's his character.. making zero sense and having extremely questionable morals.

Why do you think he does it?
Time

Sometimes, I think that he may be a bit.. mentally ill. Like a Howard Hughes type. I bet he watches the OT on repeat every day of the week that he isn't working or out in the public to look for "mistakes" to "fix." That's the only way that I can possibly imagine how some of the changes that happened to the Blu-rays were even thought up. Like the R2 rocks and stuff.

I heard the 2006 set with the GOUT is now gone...
Time

Yesasia is alright, they're not scammers. Not my preferred import shop but they're not going to take your money and run. :)

So the pan & scan versions have the same letterboxed GOUT disc as the WS versions, correct? I'll keep an eye out at Walmart/Best Buy/etc or whatnot the next time I go out that way. Stores are too far from my house to go check whenever I want. :(
