ANDOR: The Rogue One Arc (Rogue One Rescore) [AVAILABLE]
Time

Someone else is working on Andor-ized version of the movie, but still as one movie. They did some tweaking to the ending and shared the video here. Specifically in the final few second, they added a nice little flashback to Cass’s sister, which is a beautiful touch, but also serves the purpose of lengthening out those final moments appropriately. In case you’re looking for ideas.

I already commented previously, and I do stick by what I said about perhaps doing some editing/scene swapping at the top of episode 13 to ease the transition better pacing-wise from Andor to Rogue One. I know, NFBisms, that you’re not particularly interested in doing much more actual editing to the film. I think basically everything else is fine as is, but I finished watching 14 and 15 yesterday, and I did find the ending just a tad abrupt. My first suggestion would be, if possible, to move the quick bit with Vader ordering the chase to be one or two cuts earlier. Currently, it’s the last thing we see before the quite short final shot of Cass and Jyn hugging, and that feels a bit odd, emphasis-wise. Aside from that (maybe it’s not even possible tbh), something as simple as adding some slo-mo to the final shots of Cass and Jyn on the beach might help. Just a thought, not even sure if it’d work.

a) I think the Lah’mu sequence needs to be reconsidered in light of Andor S1/2. In the original Rogue One, it helps introduce to Krennic. With Andor S2, he’s less in need of an introduction. Further, the sequence breaks Andor’s norm of flashbacks being limited to the narrator’s perspective, as shown in Andor and Kleya’s flashbacks. Additionally, I think Lah’mu should be split into two portions to give the sequence more narrative momentum throughout the episode. I think Lah’mu Flashback Part 1 should begin with Jyn running to her home as Krennic’s shuttle flies overhead, with the following additional modifications:

  1. We exclusively see information that Jyn has access to – we see the ship when she does, we can’t see her parents if she isn’t with them.
  2. When Jyn is packing we hear Lyra making a call and saying “It’s Lyra. It’s happened. He’s come for us.” But we are not shown/told who she is speaking to.
  3. We show Jyn returning to listen in on Galen/Krennic’s conversation earlier, giving us a POV into the interaction

This sequence will end when Lyra is killed and the Death Troopers begin fanning out, with adult Jyn waking up in prison, leaving the audience to wonder what happens in between.

b) After Rings of Kafrene, cut to Bohdi meeting Saw. I think Saw’s band needs less of an introduction after season 2, and we can get straight to the meat of it. It also gives us some breathing room from Cassian/Jyn’s storyline. As a side note, I would keep Bor Gullet, because it shows how far Saw has fallen, directly mirroring imperial torture methods. Plus adding these scenes makes Jyn/Cassian’s story move at a less breakneck pace, because in light of season 2 it feels like Cassian is pinballing around Yavin.

c) After Saw/Bohdi, move to Jyn’s jailbreak.

d) With Yavin featuring so prominently in the show, it requires a less grandiose introduction. We can probably hard cut straight from Jyn getting bodyslammed to her being walked into a rebel interrogation.

e) I think Bail’s presence during the interrogation is pure fan service. In the context of Andor season 2, we just saw this guy, so seeing him again doesn’t add anything to the scene except highlight the awkwardness of the recast, so I think his presence is an easy cut. I think we can also cut the short shot of Cassian undoing Jyn’s bonds.

I agree with many of your notes, but these in particular are probably a smart way to handle things in the opening scenes. In line with my comment about fixing some of the pacing issues coming off of Andor.

On the subject of post-credits sequences, I’m firmly of the belief that the Vader/Leia stuff should be kept to post-credits. It fits with what Andor did in season 1, and it works to keep the main part of the story focused on our actual main characters.

As to the Bix scene. First off, this edit isn’t touching the main series, so it would seem odd to put that at the end of this edit. But even more than that, I think it’s impossible to watch the ending of Andor and not sense that it’s crafted as a series finale, or at least real season finale. That montage of characters at the end, for example. It has the sense of the an ending, but also the beginning of something new. I think in that respect, it’s okay to think of Rogue One, even in this Andor arc edit, to be something more like a sequel miniseries, or like a British style Christmas special, bridging Andor with A New Hope. It doesn’t literally have to be the Andor finale. It’s the story being handed off to Jyn to some degree, before being handed off to the Skywalkers. Which really just fits thematically anyway. In that context, Bix at the end of Andor is the right call.

Posted this over on fanedit.org, but figured since there’s more activity on this forum, I’d post here, too.

Just finished Andor, and decided to immediately follow it up with your incredible fan edit. It plays extremely well, really like a continuation. Really, just marvellous work.

Though I do have maybe one note off the top. It’s funny, because the way you have it is how it was originally, but I think given how Andor plays out, his going from confirming the intelligence on Kafrene to finding Jyn just feels a bit fast. I wonder if it might make sense to start Episode 13 with Cassian’s introduction. Then Bodhi. Then maybe cut to Jyn in prison/being transported, with the flashback slotted in there, maybe slightly chopped up. I think that might smooth out the pacing a bit at the start, and would also kind of fit better with the established use of interspersed flashbacks in the first arc of Andor season 1, as well as season 2 episode 10. Might also make it feel more like the story is being handed over from Cassian to Jyn. Of course, all this might just be me. And perhaps it’s too complicated to bother with anyway.

I’ll also second Onhisbacko on adding in that new Star Wars logo at the start (along with a previously on for episode 13, of course). Could also make sense to copy the format of season 2’s BBY title cards over black and have it go BBY0 in blue letters over black instead of how it is in the movie.

Wow, this looks incredible. The definition of the Blu-ray, but with the style of a film print. What comes next, after the regrade? Also, is there a special method to dealing with the problem shots where the green tint darkened and took detail from the image? I know the other big colour restoration here used the chroma from the theatrical blu-ray for that stuff.
