Greedo subtitles outside the 16:9 frame
Time
As a person with only a 4:3 TV, I like subtitles in the black; they are easier to see, and they do not pollute the image.
Additionally, if they were burnt into the image, us 4:3'rs may have some difficulty reading them.

However, I bet that I too would complain if I were in your folks' shoes.
I know this is not an anamorpic release, but how do traditional anamorphic DVD releases handle subs? Are they in the black for 4:3 viewing, but overlay the image for widescreen TVs?
It would be ideal if there was a preference for on-image or in-black for subs on DVDs.

I thought I came up with a solution for the widescreeners - closed captioning - but I just checked, Greedo dialogue is not in the CC.
Too bad.

DVD exclusives from various retailers.....
Time
You know that the ezydvd tin offer isn't the OUT release?

I was actually confused about that. The website mentions "Containing the original Star Wars trilogy", but then also
"Each of the three films in the STAR WARS TRILOGY include the new extended editions that have been digitally restored and re-mastered by THX for superior sound and picture quality."

That advertising was similar to how other websites have been advertising the new discs, but now that you mention it, the tin art is [unsurprisingly] similar to the trilogy set from last time around; I did not notice it before, because I do not own it.
cheers for the clarification!

I know that this topic fizzled a bit...

http://shop.starwars.com/
"StarWarsShop is offering the new Star Wars Trilogy DVDs (with bonus unaltered versions of the films as extras) for preorder in a specially-priced bundled set that includes an exclusive Topps collector card depicting the famous Han vs. Greedo scene from A New Hope!"
The [pathetic] greedo card

http://www.fye.com
"Order one of the Unaltered Original Films (the first three pictured below) and you'll receive a special exclusive limited edition set of Topps Star Wars trading cards! While supplies last! Limit one set per person. Free card set to ship separately within 3-4 weeks."
View set here.

http://www.ezydvd.com.au
"We've tapped into the mysteries of the Force to bring you this EXCLUSIVE Limited Edition Embossed Collector's Tin! Containing the original Star Wars trilogy and limited to 6000 units, This collection is never to be repeated!"
I think the tin looks better than Bbuy's - ezydvd tin

...any others?

Censorship of the original films
Time
Hello

Other than the inappropriate use (dare I say "deliberate manipulation"?) of the terms "censorship" and "capitalist" there is one other thing that is irksome to me:

(As we all know, I didn't accuse you I merely pointed out it is not your right as you claimed it to be.)

It should be pointed out that if you reside within North America, be it USA or Canada, you do have a legal right to edit any film copy in your possession. I am unsure about other nations in the World, but in at least these two, you are safe to edit what you please with your mass-produced reproduction.

Censorship of the original films
Time
Hello

Picasso - All prints of paintings done by Picasso are edits. Every poster or "museum quality" copy is a cleaned up version of the original. Colour-correction, despeckle, and etc were done to make it look better because artifacts were introduced during the duplication procedure. Lest we not forget that restoration is also done to the originals for the sake of perserving them. En total, however, I do not feel that Picasso is a fitting example for this argument because ...

if I control a Picasso I can

...as far as I know, no person on this board has an original print, or even a duplicate of the original film print. We do not control a Lucas, and have no ability to alter a Lucas. We each have in possession a copy or two or three of a mass-produced reproduction. Barring inflated prices on eBay, these mass-produced reproductions are worthless in the grand scheme of the art & film world.

All in all, I think it is safe to assume that none of us control anything of substatial value that would facilitate or deny a Star Wars film archival project of import.

Censorship of the original films
Time
Hello

Firstly, I am not quite sure what the beef is with Jehovah's Witnesses, given that every bible in existence has been edited to push whatever version a particular "Christian" cult wished to push, be it Catholic, Lutheran, Protestant, Southern Baptist or Latter Day Saints.

Secondly, the use of the word "censorship" I think is inappropriate. "Censorship" requires a powerful person or body (i.e. governmental) to deny a film, book, or art piece publication. What is going on here with regards to the OT versions are "edits". No person here has the power to say "I hearby declare that this is the only version you will ever see. If you attempt to acquire or view any other version you shall be fined and/or imprisoned and/or stoned to death."

It surely is semantics, but I feel that the inappropriate use of the term "censorship" dilutes the harsh nature of that which is legitimate censorship.

Just my thoughts.

Star Wars DVD Covers
Time
Hello

I love the covers folks! Very talented bunch, indeed!

Although I was pretty deligent in reading thru all 45+ pages, I did not see a link to an updated set by Scara (typo-corrected). Are those covers available yet?

Thanks for all the contributions people, you have provided many fun and creative options to chose from!

***The "SPIDER" Trilogy DVD Info and Feedback Thread***
Time
Hello

I have this set and I have chosen NOT to post a reveiw of this set as to avoid any needless backlash from Spider.

Would you be willing to reconsider? I have been going thru all the threads and have come to appreciate your thoughts and reviews on the films. It is not that I doubt Hal 9000 will do a fine review job, I look forward to it, but your input has been the bedrock in OT reviews.

Please reconsider.

Cheers!

Info: Stop ebay pirates
Time
Hello

To me, $30, even with a case and art, is too much for a bootleg product, from an unknown source and of questionable quality. Especially considering all the options available.

Would it be better to set-up a dummy account and use it to inform bidders that the films are available for download via BT? Perhaps include a link to suprnova and/or myspleen, along with a link to one of the fine BT tutorials online. At least then the person will have more information and options available in making their decision.

cheers!

***The MeBeJedi feedback thread ***
Time
Hello

Personally, I want to see them all. I may decide I do not like this one or that one, but I am interested in viewing them all. Offer me the version with only the lint/dirt removed, or a version with the mattes cleaned up, or a version with colour uniformity, or a version straight from filmstock with cig burns in the corner et al.

I thank MeBeJedi, Zion, Moth3r, and everybody who creates the OT versions, as well as those who distribute them. 'Tis all wonderfully interesting and fun
Thank you!
