The Abyss Special Edition - my 4K Upscale (Released)
Time

I’m posting this under preservation because, while the rules say properties from obsolete formats that haven’t had a DVD release, I think most of us would consider DVD to be approaching the status of “obsolete.”

So anyway, I’ve done a 4K upscale of the DVD of The Abyss Special Edition (1989) using Topaz Video Enhance AI. I’m very happy with the results for the most part.

EDIT: Here’s a trailer I put together. Be sure to set quality to max so you can really see the difference! https://youtu.be/yBfNXaJAX_A

It is an upscale so of course it isn’t perfect. The one shot that I wish would work better is the big overhead shot of when the alien ship surfaces from the ocean. It’s so unusual that the AI just didn’t really know what to do with it. Anyways, let me know what you think!

Hey all. I’m a video editor, and my primary project lately has been using Topaz software to to AI upscaling of old standard def material that deserves the HD treatment. I’m in the process of upscaling the entirety of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine to HD, and I have completed a 4K upscale of The Abyss Special Edition. Searching for info about HD versions of The Abyss led me to this site. I’m also a longtime fan of Adywan and Harmy. Glad to be here!
