THE STAR WARS SAGA - 1080P AVCHD DVD-9 for PS3 & Blu-Ray players - Episodes 1, 4 & 5 available now

I plan on using it as source material for future editing. Does anybody know how to convert this type of format into DVD? Or MPEG-2?

The ISO is a UDF 2.5 file system, so getting to the files inside the ISO is your first challenge. The only file you probably need is BDMV\STREAM\00001.m2ts. The container format of the 00001.m2ts file is MPEG-TS. The codecs used inside are h264 (video) and AC3 (audio). For editing, you'll probably want to go with an AVI container, and lossless video and audio codecs. Only convert to MPEG2 and DVD VOBs after all your editing is done.

Finally finished downloading this. A big thanks to everyone uploading and seeding the torrent! :) My dual layer DVD's have not arrived yet, so I've only been able to watch about half of it (they were just about to rough up the scanning crew when it quit playing).

My projector/viewing specs are above, so I won't reiterate that stuff..Here are my observations, but please note in advance that they are all very minor:

Picture quality was better than I expected. The colors really do look nice, excellent work there, thanks! The only time I thought it looked weird was when the red light was shining on Leia (when she is hiding and about to get stunned).. the red light had an unnatural glow to it. But maybe it is supposed to look that way, I dunno. Very minor. Also, I am not 100% sure, but it seemed like "black" wasn't quite as black as it could have been, but if so, it wasn't off by much.

In the brighter scenes, the compression artifacts and static pixels are more noticeable, not much that can be done about this, of course. The first time I saw any problems was in the white corridor smoke. Then, when the droids were first on Tatooine. There were probably more, but I was drawn into the movie, so again, minor.

One problem that seemed to persist throughout the movie was an occasional video stutter. I had the player set to 24 fps mode, which the projector recognized. Is the video also at that rate, or is it perhaps 25 fps (or maybe converted from 25 fps)?

I'm curious.. how hard would it be to blend the subtitles in so that they don't have hard edges? I could see the edges, as well as the thin black outline around them. I should put in my GOUT disc and see what they look like on it, I can't remember :(. The "Han shoots first" scenes blended right in, very nicely done.

Thanks again for doing this. Definitely one to get if you have HD! I enjoyed watching it (well, except for the Alderaan explosion ring, but that isn't your fault!). :)

Lost message text when sending PM
Time

It turns out that I was logged out at the time I was typing up the PM (I cleared my cookies for another site). So, after I clicked the button to send the PM, it asked me to login, which I did. It then said it would bring me back to the page I was on, which it did.. but the text box was empty (so I would have had to retype the entire message). I checked the Sent folder just in case, and my PM wasn't in there, so I believe it was lost.

I know that passing this type of postdata around can be a pain (perhaps my knowledge is incomplete, but I think you'd have to send my message to the login screen, then to the redirecting page, then finally back to the PM page.. ugh!). Since this situation is unusual, I would have been fine with having my submit redirected back to the edit page, with an error message saying that I wasn't logged in and that my message would be lost. Then, I could have copied my message to the clipboard, logged in, and re-sent.

adding LFE to GOUT (Released)
Time

Cool! I was born in 1978, so I wasn't around to witness Star Wars in a theater until the 1997 disaster. But, according to my father, one of the fond memories he has of the film was right at the beginning when the Star Destroyer flew by and shook the entire theater. I was hoping for that experience in 1997, but I guess they had everything nailed down too well.. hehe. Anyhow, as my 18" sonotube sub project is reaching completion, your work couldn't have been better timed. I'd love to get my hands on a copy of this. Thanks!

THE STAR WARS SAGA - 1080P AVCHD DVD-9 for PS3 & Blu-Ray players - Episodes 1, 4 & 5 available now

Adywan, thank you for doing this! It is so much easier to be able to just burn to a DVD rather than try to futz with converting, especially in Linux where the tools seem to be nonexistent.

The Blu-Ray compatibility test works fine in the Samsung BD-P1400. The test image looks great. Equipment, in case that matters: I'm projecting onto a white 16:9 (92" diagonal) screen, using the Panasonic PT-AE1000U 1080p LCD projector, 24fps mode. Viewing from a distance of 5 feet. I cannot report on the projected quality of "Star Wars" (still downloading).

Besides the OT, I'm also very interested in seeing Revenge of the Sith in HD. Glad that is on your agenda. Been trying to get it via BT, but apparently on PirateBay, most everyone decided to follow PotC: "take what you can, give nothing back". I think my share ratio is over 7 now, and I have less than 10% of the film. Lame.

Which brings me to: Thanks to everyone supporting the BitTorrent on Demonoid! Wish I could afford a faster connection, but I have the upload maxed out to what my connection will do (and 100 upload slots). I've heard that uploading too much on cable makes downloading slower, but whatever, I'm glad to have to opportunity to help, even if it's just a little bit.

"If you leave now, help them you could..."
Time
I take this to mean that with the training that Luke was given, he could possibly help his friends ("you could"). Yoda thinks that he won't, hence the "destroy" part ("you would"). Yoda thinks Luke is reckless, and "now matters are worse". But, since he could not foresee the exact outcome of events, he left in that possibility that Luke could help. And I guess he didn't realize the third possibility that actually happened, not helping but not joining Vader either... well perhaps he did, in a way: "mind what you have learned, save you it can".

Edit: Guess I need to watch the movie a few more times.. losing my grip on the exact dialogue

Might want to proofread that. Here are some errors I noticed on a quick read-through:

Back:
* 20minutes => 20 minutes
* preformed => performed
* Writen => Written
* Shakespear => Shakespeare
* this => . This

Front:
* writen => written
* Shakespear => Shakespeare
* it => . It

Also seemed like there were some grammatical errors.

Hope this helps!

Well, I can't answer for "always", but just the Faces LD. The DVD does appear to be more blue, however, the DVD also has a lot more stars. When the LD pans left (or is the word "scans"?) I see more stars and they appear blue. When they aren't moving they appear whiter, but I can barely see them at all. It's almost like a grey/blue.. hard to tell what color they really are. Switching back and forth between the versions I can say that the DVD makes the LD look like VHS in comparison. It is like a white blurry fog has been lifted from the images.

IMHO the DVD is spectactular. All I wanted was a backup of my Laserdiscs.. LD quality. Well they are even better than that.. I'm absolutely thrilled.

Neat question! I'd never noticed that before, LOL.

Most, but not all of the starfield scenes in ROTJ do appear to be blue (with a few white stars sprinkled in). It seems that in the scenes surrounding Endor, some of the scenes show white starfields and some show blue starfields. This will change even from scene to scene.

I checked ANH and ESB.. both seem to have exclusively white starfields.

Captured more images. Added thumbnails and wikified the page, use this new URL:

A couple interesting ones:

#33: It's raining on the Death Star! I remember hearing that they cleaned this up for the 1997 SE's. It also appears on the Faces LD, but I didn't realize what I was seeing because of the lower quality image.

#39: My favorite ship and nickname

I've started putting ROTJ screencaps here (NTSC):

http://kidsquid.com/files/starwars/rotj/

For those curious, I use Ubuntu Linux, here is my capturing method:
1) mplayer dvd://3 -vo x11 -alang en -chapter 1 -framedrop -noaspect
2) pause and frame advance as desired
3) capture window, crop, and save as PNG with The Gimp

I ran out of time this morning, but I'll do more later.

Enjoy!

Wish I could, but my discs have not arrived yet. According to the USPS they are still somewhere between Richmond, CA and here (Tucson, AZ), and have been since the 11th.

When I finally get them I'll be checking out ROTJ first, as I've watched it the most. I'd like to compare the wobble of the Faces LD against the DVD, check for moire I noticed in the Vader/Emperor walking scene (and compare the highlight brightness and clarity of the stormtrooper extras), compare audio quality, and see if anything was missing in the side/disk changes. I should also be able to detect the layer change.

3D ?!
Time
I'd watch the Prequels in 3-D. But the Pixar movies would be more fun for me to watch in 3-D. They probably still have all the 3-D models, animations, etc and could create a real 3-D experience. For Bugs Life, they created a full frame version by rendering the top and bottom that didn't exist in the theatrical version.

So then, PAL or NTSC GOUT for best quality?
Time

That´s not what he said. You just happened to have interpreted it the same way as he did in his follow-up post to my response.

Out of context you can make statements say many things. In the context of what he was saying, it made perfect sense to me. Was it worded perfectly? No. Is that a reason to flame someone? No.

I can see those black lines especially when watching laserdiscs. DVD's aren't so bad.

Then there is something wrong. NTSC=NTSC.

Yeah NTSC = NTSC, but the source image makes a difference! Play an original Atari 2600 someday. Or better yet, a Channel F. The black lines are extremely obvious in these old gaming systems. It is because the resolution of the source image is less than NTSC is capable of representing. When the video is being output, they don't want a squished image at the top of the frame. So, they stretch it out. This results in black lines where there isn't anything real to display. Non-anamorphic DVD does a pretty good job of filling up NTSC, but it doesn't appear perfect, at least to my eyes. When I squeeze the image, I can no longer see the lines.

No offence, but did YOU actually READ AND UNDERSTAND what boris has written here over the past few months? His numerous false claims, and always repeating them over and over, despite being corrected many times by people who actually WORK IN THE INDUSTRY Please, don´t go the dark path of the force with him, and try to defend him here, just because you happen to feel sorry for him, and feel angry about our "anti-Lucas" frustrations we are supposed to have.

I have read many of his posts. Some people have a gift for writing very clearly and concisely. Boris may not always write 100% clearly. However, I can usually understand what he is trying to say, even if he occassionally uses the wrong words or terminology to express it. I'm not an English teacher.. I am more interested in trying to understand what is being communicated than the way it was said. So, I wouldn't be a very good politician or lawyer. They like to pick people apart and NOT understand what people are saying unless it is just perfect.

By the way, I'm not joining any kind of "dark side" for defending this post of Boris's. It is not because I "feel sorry". You didn't try to understand his post. You spouted off some things over some past Boris hatred. And yes, I think you are taking out your frustrations on him. In your mind he is an easy target because of bad grammar or whatever standard you are using. You mark him as a Troll so that you can rally your mob to bash him. I think he brings up some very good points. I can understand why you are so upset at Lucas. Just be an adult about it!
