You have a PM, however you should know that not owning the source material is frowned upon.

Why would you send a PM helping out someone who is breaking the forum rules?

I wasn’t aware I was breaking any rules. I just thought you had to have at least one retail copy of your sources. I didn’t know you needed retail copies of ALL of your sources.

It depends on what it is. With something like Despecialized, Harmy says you should own the Blu Rays, since those are the primary source for those. Since you are using multiple versions, it’s best to own those individually.

Ah, I got it. Well, I am attempting to procure the 2006 DVDs from eBay now to avoid this snafu from happening again.

Who knew trying to make a present for someone would turn into this…

I own the Complete Saga boxset, which I mentioned earlier. Thank you for the PM.

This includes the 2004 DVD, since you’re wanting a rip of that as well.

I am currently looking into purchasing either the 2004 or 2006 DVD with this in mind now. Thank you for the info.

Yes, I would definitely like it to be HD across the board as much as possible since I plan on making this a BD set.

I would definitely be grateful to get my hands on that. I was gonna try and lift the crawl from the BD Rip I was gonna make, but this would definitely save me some time.

I’ll definitely go hunting for Special Features discs soon. That’s what’s been racking my brain the most, besides how I’m going to make the menus and all that other stuff.

Star Wars - Collector's Edition?
Time

So, my girlfriend’s birthday is coming in October and I wanted to make her something not only nice, but something that will appeal to her Sci-Fi geek side as well (she’s in love with Star Wars as much as I am). So I was thinking that maybe I would try to replicate the 30th Anniversary Collector’s Edition of Blade Runner and create a special Collector’s Edition for Star Wars. I was thinking it would go something like this:

Disc One: The Complete Saga Cut (2011)
Disc Two: Original Theatrical Cut (1977), Re-Release Theatrical Cut (1981)
Disc Three: Special Edition VHS Cut (1997), Special Edition DVD Cut (2004)
Disc Four: Special Features

I was thinking for the sources I would use a BD Rip of SW from my Complete Saga box set for the obviously titled Complete Saga cut, Despecialized Edition v2.7 for the Original Theatrical Cut and modify DespecEd 2.7 with the Episode IV crawl for the Re-Release Theatrical Cut, the Reivax DTV Capture for the SE VHS Cut, and the Star.Wars.Episode.IV.A.New.Hope.1977.720p.HDTV.x264-DON for the SE DVD Cut.

I might need alternate sources for each one just in case I can’t find those sources, and I also don’t know what should I include for special features. If anyone could help me with that, it would be greatly appreciated.

Also, please let me know if this is something that I should do. I think it’s a worthwhile project and would love to undertake it, but I don’t wanna step on anyone’s toes if someone else is already doing something like this.

Thank you all for your input!

Splinter of the Mind's Eyes: A Star Wars Story (or Episode VII.5?)
Time

While working on both my recreation of the IMAX cut of AOTC and my Special Edition of The Force Awakens, I have come up with the idea of adapting Alan Dean Foster’s “Splinter of the Mind’s Eye” as a midquel between TFA and Episode VIII, replacing Luke and Leia with Finn and Poe, and Vader with Kylo Ren.

I guess it would be “A Star Wars Story” and not part of the main sequel trilogy.

Anyone has thoughts on this?

Hey, I know I’m late to the party, but I’m very excited to see this version recreated! Always thought it was a wonderfully brutal cut from all the stuff I’ve read.

brandynskywalker, just in case you’re still looking for a more detailed cut list, as you’re tweaking the final cut, here are 3 articles from 2002:

BoxOfficeMojo- http://www.boxofficemojo.com/reviews/?id=121
StarWarz- http://www.starwarz.com/tbone/archive/index.php?categoryid=13&p2_articleid=294
TheForce.Net- http://www.theforce.net/latestnews/story/the_definitive_imax_cut_scenes_list_64801.asp

Note that a poster on DVDTalk at the time claimed the last one was not completely accurate. Take that one with a grain of salt.

Thanks for this! I’ve actually been referencing since I first started the project, but it’s great to have them all in one spot instead of having to keep hunting for them. Thank you again!

6/28 Edit: Mixed down my new BDRIP of AOTC to 5.1 because of the asset I was using for the new LucasFilm logo only had 5.1 audio on it (even though there’s no sound!). The final cut, which is being worked on now, will be in 5.1 Surround. My laptop, tho a beast it is, can only handle editing audio in 5.1 for some reason.

A “digital copy” should be available in mid-July. Should be.

7/1 Edit: Mid-July was an overestimate. I have just finished cut up all of the footage and I’ve started working on transitions already. It could possibly come in the next couple of weeks. After releasing the “digital copy” I will try and figure out a BR ready file.

Also, I opted out of recreating the IMAX slideshow style credits. The normal credits intact, clocking the cut at 2 hrs and 6 mins.

No problem!

I just finished doing the second rough cut for it. I think I’ve nailed it down pretty close to the original. I did, however, make minor trims here and I did cut out the original Fox Fanfare in favor of TFA’s Lucasfilm Logo.

I still, unfortunately, have re-rip my BR for 6.1 audio so once that’s done, I’ll be back to editing room again.

I’m also going to need help with creating the slideshow credits because I really don’t know the hell they’re suppose to look like.

Quick update: I have started working on this already. I will not be replicating the pan and scan of the original IMAX Experience because I don’t feel there’s a need for it. Plus this is a recreation, and not a restoration, so it doesn’t have to be exactly perfect.

6/10/16 Edit: I have finished the rough cut. It’s still a little over two hours long and I’m trying to get the 117 min runtime down perfect. And I also made the mistake of editing with 2.0 audio instead of the full 6.1 so I’ll be making a new BD rip with 6.1 audio. I’ve also found a link to a complete list of chances here on the forum and will be refering to that from now on.

Haha. Thanks. I thought it would it was an okay idea, but I’m glad someone likes it. I know there’s been word around the campfire of doing extended cuts if the timecodes are removed, but I figured I would go away and reincorporate them as they are now.

Love the removal of Kylo Ren’s “Han Solo” line–a much needed cut.

Don’t you find that the “Finn will be fine” scene is super awkward, though? I guess maybe in context is feels a little less weird? Where in the film did you place it?

Also, while I love the scene itself, I actually think that the decision to remove the “Kylo Searches the Falcon” scene from the film’s final cut was the right one. I mean, would he really have left the Falcon intact? Wouldn’t he have destroyed or at least sabotaged it to prevent his enemies from being able to leave Starkiller Base? It just doesn’t make sense. Just my two cents. Thoughts?

I think the “Han Solo” line is cut because he says it on falcon in the deleted scene, which I think is a good scene to reinstate. But yes I agree that the “Finn will be Fine” scene is awkward.

I actually removed the “Han Solo” line from that scene for two reasons. 1) Because I think it’s awkward for him to keep to refer to his father in such a way after the reveal of his lineage, and 2) Because the line is repeated in the Falcon Search scene that I reinstated.

As for the “Finn Will Be Fine” Scene, I do think it’s an awkward scene by itself, but with the right context, it can work. I inserted the scene between Rey and Leia’s hug and R2’s reawakening.

I am definitely up for recreating this. I just got done doing initial work on my TFA: Special Edition and I could definitely get into this. I am going to start on this while I’m taking a break from TFA SE, I might do a quick pass of color correction on it, not sure yet. But I am definitely willing to recreate this.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens -- Special Edition
Time

Hello! I have just recently finished a rough cut of what I am calling TFA: Special Edition. Although I am like most of my fellow SW fans who cannot stand what had been to the original theatrical versions of SW, ESTB, and ROTJ, I couldn’t help but take a little inspiration from their SEs and decided to “augment” TFA a little.

No, I did not add in new, pointless VFX because A) I don’t have the time or skills to do that shit and B) I wasn’t going for that anyway. To be honest, I didn’t do a real restructure to TFA. I just took the deleted scenes that I thought would be interesting to see and reinstated them.

I didn’t try to play around and remove the timecode from the extra scenes and that’s because they didn’t bother me. I actually use the timecode as a “footage marker”, like the Alien boxset where you can turn on the markers for the alternate versions.

Only four minutes were added overall, but I enjoy seeing the film with these moments included. If anyone would be interesting in seeing any previews, let me know.

CHANGES:

  • “Finn and the Villager” reinstated
  • “Jakku Message” reinstated
  • “X-Wings Prepare for Lightspeed” reinstated
  • When Kylo Ren meets the First Order officer after Rey escapes, his “Han Solo” line is removed and the scene trimmed.
  • “Kylo Searches The Falcon” reinstated
  • “Finn Will Be Fine” reinstated

The only scenes I did not include were the Snow Speeder Chase, because of the un-finalized VFX, and the Tunnels Stand off, because it’s just silly and unneeded.

If enough people get interested in it, I’ll get a link up.

Blu-Ray and other HD box size STAR WARS covers
Time

I have just recently made two custom covers to go alongside my Despecialized Edition copies. Since I use ronwlim’s box art for them, I decided to make a custom cover inspired by his work. I also did this back in January with a mock-up for the Phantom Menace, so if it looks familiar, that is why. Below you find the “standard” insert that I use, an alternate insert with Drew Struzan art, and the insert inside that features a textless version of the blue Finn vs. Kylo Ren IMAX poster art.

NOTE: These are sized for the very same Criterion clear cases Ron suggests for his box art of the Despecialized trilogy. I’ll get a download link up if anyone wants to use them. Enjoy!

I made these inspired by Ron W Lim’s art he created for Harmy’s Despecialized editions. Seeing as I currently have TFA sitting next to both my Star Wars Complete Saga box set and my copies of the Despecialized edition with Ron’s art, I decided to make these covers to match the aesthetic of his art. I personally use the first version insert. The insert inside image is from the textless version of one of the IMAX posters for the film.

NOTE: These were made with the Criterion Collection clear cases in mind, which can be found here -> https://www.criterion.com/shop_products/91-clear-blu-ray-case-5-pack
