Could the compromise for the “Rey is nobody edits” be, that through dialogue changes it is implied that Palpatine is purely pitting Kylo Ren against Rey to see which ONE of them will join him as his new apprentice and thus restore the rule of two (Palpy + one other)?

Instead of wanting Rey to strike him down, could Palpatine ask her to lay down her weapon and kneel before him?

Good idea; I feel as if this was partially what JJ had in mind but only on paper since it doesn’t come across well. I say partially because Palp’s goal was to live on through Rey, so it was like Plan B for him.

Palpatine’s announcement makes zero sense in the sense he’d announce his army BEFORE it was ready to launch, because that just lures the entire galaxy to find and attack. Now, if he’s doing it to lure Rey there, Death Star 2 style, then that makes a bit more sense.

The problem you have is you would have to cut the red guards attacking Rey and The Knight’s of Ren attacking Ben because otherwise if Palpatine’s plan was to get Rey/Ren both together why would his guards (or the Knights) be trying to stop them? You then also have the problem of where does Ren get the saber from?

Here’s a random idea from me, it might be a bit radical for some: Having looked at Palpatines death I don’t think it would be too hard using lightning VFX and Photoshop cloning of the saber on each frame, to have Rey actually kill Palpatine with her OWN force lightning (instead of using the second saber to effectively block and push Palpy’s own attack back onto himself).

I would be very interested to hear people’s general opinions on this because I thought the death of the Emperor was an unsatisfying end and it was thematically too safe. Obviously I understand why they didn’t show Rey using anger/hatred but having seen Rey losing control and using force lightning on the transport earlier in the film, how would people feel to see a Jedi using lightning but in a more controlled manner and for the greater good? Yes it pushes her closer to the darkside but is it a step too far?

Hi Poppa, nice work as always, unfortunately I think these choices are really going to split opinion. 4A is the only one that works for me personally. 4C comes too far out of leftfield, it would be jarring for me even with the prior hints. Also I think the film really needs the last moment between Rey and Ren and I would argue that it is even more important than setting up TROS so that rules 4B out for me also.

Season 8

• Fix the coffee cup and water bottle
• Improve the colour/darkness of Episode 3 (Poppasketti WOW AWESOME WORK!!)
• Improve the Rheagal death scene similar to Reddit above, insert another scene though directly after before Euron seems to time travel back to Kings Landing
• Possibly remove the silly Bronn scene or could dialogue be added so that he still threatens them but he is torn and more jokey with them?
• When Dany offers surrender to Cersei outside of KL, change the VFx so that they are standing much further away from the scorpions and are out of range (or reduce the amount of scorpions)
• Insert footage from the upcoming prequel show when it arrives into The Long Night battle or show white walkers attacking The Last Hearth using footage from Hardhome etc we just need a bit more to show them slaying innocents and to show off the destructive nature of the WW
• Insert something/anything between the Jon/Dany murder scene and the election scene, the cut and change in tone between the two was terrible and jarring. Maybe have a shot of each of the different armies gathering outside the walls
• Remove some of the humour in the election scene as above (I can’t get the video to work but it sounds great)

Now I liked each of the six episodes as standalones (apart from the last half an hour of ep4) but the season needed more episodes/footage and too many plot points felt unearned or unresolved. However I think the show could be improved massively by including a flashback section at the very end of the final episode after Jon has disappeared into the woods. The show needs a Keyser Soze moment to end on and there are loads of Reddit theories that I really like, most are tin foily and would boil down to personal taste but I think the show is crying out for one involving Bran (who’s character was butchered this season).

E.g. Jon disappears into the woods with Tormund and the Wildlings, fade to black then:

• Maybe imply that there is a new Night King, Bran’s eyes could go blue or maybe even show him warging into Drogon or reanimating Dany with blue eyes etc

• My personal take is that GRR Martin will reveal that Bran has been manipulating time and influencing history throughout the whole show. He has basically Littlefingered everyone to become King. He has played each of his enemies off against each other and moved everyone into the right place at the right time so that these events we have seen for 8 seasons played out. I believe there is some minor evidence of this in the show (just wait for the prequel) but lots more in the books. With an extended flashback scene and by using some of the narration from the histories and lore documentaries I think some of his manipulations could be alluded to. I also think you could provide some much needed motivation for the Night King right at the show’s death. You could either imply that Bran has been working towards “breaking the wheel”, for the good of the realm or instead for purely evil purposes. I’m tempted to lean towards the latter because I think it will improve the show if we suddenly discover Bran is the real villain who has tricked us all to become king, although I think Martin will make Bran more of a saviour in his books.

Wow, I’m glad this thread has been brought back to life, I adore this show and the books and it was almost perfect for the first 4 seasons. There’s so much above that I agree with entirely especially the idea of just editing individual moments in episodes. I agree about the detrimental affects the Young Griff cuts and Euron’s character assassination had, but the show is just too damn good to give up on and even the later seasons had some brilliant moments. I have been planning my own fan edit but there are some really tough things to fix from season 5-8 and on first read I agree most of these things look impossible. I’ll split this post into two because it’s long but here are some things that need to be improved imo:

Seasons 1-7 (mainly 5-7)

• Insert some deleted scenes
• Fix Melisandre’s missing necklace in the bath
• Fix the brief appearance of Beric Dondarion before he is sent to kill the Mountain (VFx change the actor’s head)
• The other actor changes are jarring but probably impossible to undo. The first Bloodraven guy maybe could be changed to Max Von Sydow as it is only one scene? I can’t remember how bad the second Mountain actor looked, did he ever remove his helmet?
• The Dorne plot is dreadful, ideally a whole new cast would need to be integrated from a different show entirely for a few (longish) scenes, just to imply that Doran Martell had a plan and was secretly plotting against the Lannisters instead of just being weak and pointless. We need to see more of Dorne and it’s people rather than just seeing the Water Gardens.
• As a minimum we need a better way to explain why Bronn and Jaime arrive in the water gardens at the exact same time as the sand snakes attack.
• Change how Areo Hotah is killed with a tiny knife in the back (can it be shown going into the back of his head?)
• Away from Dorne I hated how Brienne just turns up in time to kill Stannis. There needs to be an effects shot where Brienne is seen watching the end of Stannis’s defeat from the higher ground. She sees Stannis stagger into the woods before going to kill him
• Barristan Selmy doesn’t die like such a punk (Can he kill more Harpies or be sped up a bit Lol)
• Fix the vanishing dogs that attack Sansa/Theon
• The waif stabbing Arya. This was awful, try to cut the shot of the knife going into her belly and being twisted and leave it with the initial slash. Not easy.
• Improve the first Euron sea battle
• Don’t then show Euron’s ship at Casterley Rock unless it can time travel
• Show Bronn running away from Drogon after firing the scorpion at him
• Remove Jaime sinking in his armour after he charges the dragon
• Dany shouldn’t know who Randall Tarly is before questioning him
• Tyrion should be concerned for “missing” Jaime, maybe have him scanning the battlefield
• Davos is sent for a blacksmith and doesn’t revisit Gendry out of good will
• Bran has a better greensight vision where he sees the future (including capturing the wight etc, Viserion falling), which he then sends by raven to Jon and which then leads to the mission north of the wall (I stole this idea from above)
• Cersei has a better reaction to Dany’s impending attack and to Jaime secretly meeting Tyrion (she does a 180 degree switch over two scenes because of her pregnancy)
• Dany chooses to fly north of the wall on her own accord before Gendry runs back to Castle Black
• Improve Uncle Benjen’s death scene, have him take down a few more wights

Hi all
I’m just starting my first fan edit, using the UK Blu Ray of TLJ as the source. I think I’m about ready to start, having converted the source files into a Lagarith video file and 6 .wav audio files, using a file conversion guide from fanedit.org. However so that I don’t have to abort the project and start again there’s a few things I’m hoping for some clarification on.

My main aim is to try and produce audio and video in the highest quality throughout, lossless wherever possible. Any help here, however minor would be very much appreciated.

1. The BluRay’s original audio was a DTS-HD 7.1 track. Is there a free/cheap way of getting 8 .wav files instead of 6?

2. If I can only get 6 .wav files “out”, what am I losing? Am I correct in believing the other 2 channels are simply “downmixed” into the 6 and in reality how much impact will this have?

3. I tried to use an application called Tranzcode to split the DTS Core sound file into 6 .wav files but these wouldn’t open in Vegas (I think because they were in a 32 bit float codec?) So instead I used Eac3to to convert from my core .dts file to 6 .wavs. Is there a quality drop because I used Eac3to and not Tranzcode? The files are smaller and 24 bits instead of 32 but I don’t know how to get the Tranzcode ones to import into Vegas?

This is a great job, well done! Thanks for persevering through all of those different versions, I reckon you’ve cracked it and the FX work throughout is brilliant.

Really nice Poppa, great work on the wide shot. I’m really looking forward to ver 2.0 also. Keep up the good work!

Just had another thought, if you want to remove one of the speeders after the crash in the wide shot, it would be easier and probably more attractive to remove the one on the right, that way the cloud of dust can remain in and it would look realistic.

I’ve been through all of the destroyed speeder scenes again and it’s slim pickings unfortunately, the tumbling one that I picked is definitely the easiest to flip and edit. Maybe just maybe though you could create your own crash for Rose using other footage such as that of Finn when he flies very close to the ground right at the very start of the battle?

Poppasketti, glad you like the second clip, I really do hope that I can help in some way and thank you again for giving me the nudge to get my own edit started.

I kind of agree about the rolling skimmer being a bit much, I don’t know if there are any other damaged skimmers that can be used instead - especially one moving from left to right. This one was flipped horizontally and I had to remove the mountain range from the “wrong” side. The Poe reaction shot is also flipped which introduces more continuity errors but I don’t think it’s so obvious?

Initially I thought removing the skimmer from the wide shot would be a piece of cake, but my first attempt was so bad you could see the mountains wobbling around in the background! I know I can re-do that shot myself to a much higher standard but if you give it a go, be very aware of the cloud of dust that kicks up into the air. I left it in but it looks silly without the second skimmer and should also be removed in my opinion.

I genuinely didn’t notice any issues with smoke or shadows from your previous video. If I could suggest one alteration, I would add a laser bolt going through/past the skimmer in the first two frames of the sequence. I tried this myself and it looked quite nice just to emphasize that the AT-AT shot Finn down.

One last thought; I had a play around with the big wide aerial shot of the two crashed skimmers where we can see a tiny Finn running to aid Rose. This is a beautiful shot and I think it would be quite easy to switch skimmers and make it look like Finn is running away from the skimmer on the right. This gives him more time to get to Rose and sells the geography of her crash a little better. Removing or reducing the rubble from the skimmer on the left though is hard because the shot pans round. However I reckon you might be able to do it justice.

WOW!! This thread has been a great inspiration. I’ve been a long time lurker here and have many fan editing ideas but I’ve always put off starting any of “my projects”. Until now! I was toying with starting with TLJ because I love the film but just want to twaek a few things here and there. It seems we share very similar ideas with what to leave in and what to cut out and I love the progress you seem to be making with your edit, well done.

The Crait battle sequence with Rose’s dumb collision is a deal breaker for me and thanks to RogueLeader’s idea above and darthrush’s edit I am genuinely excited with what might be achievable here. So I dusted off my Photoshop skills, took the plunge and began editing TLJ. I’ve learnt so much (and made so many mistakes) in the space of a few short days.

Your latest clip above is wonderful, I tried removing one of the speeders myself and you did a much better job of it than me.

My current thinking is to have Rose get shot after she turns and heads back to the base on Poe’s command. There is a very brief clip of her retreat that I think can be used. This gives the advantage that it leads directly in to Finn turning off his comms and I think it sells his reaction (of his friend being shot down) much more favourably. To him, hope is lost and he is even more willing to make the ultimate sacrifice. With the correct audio I think that this can work and I would love to know what you think:

Also version 2, I think this blast effect is better and more in keeping with Star Wars but it just makes the event seem a bit too quick.

Well done Hal, I watched V2 this week just prior to seeing TLJ again and I loved every single minute of it! This really is my “go to” version of TFA now, thank you. The film just works so much better in my opinion with the Starkiller Base stuff towards the climax and I love what you did with R2.

Is their any chance of cropping Chewie out of the hug scene at the end - just the bit where he walks away from the camera, straight past Leia? This is one of the only things that still bugs me about TFA now. It’s only a few frames that would need cropping (or deleting).
