I wonder if you could edit the “I am one with the Force and the Force is with me” to a rhyming game - something like “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers…” and they keep cocking it up.
Just to clarify, if Vader had pulled the plans out of the Rebel’s hand using the force it would have really mucked up the next movie. Just suspend belief for a moment and go see it - its really really good.
^I would omit any visualisation of Leia in lieu of introducing her in ANH - but I like the idea of swapping them over.
Where ROGUE ONE uses small title cards for planets, you could include them literally everytime a character walks into a different building or room.
I thought she was great! She wasn’t necessarily fighting FOR the rebellion, but was doing it for her father.
Although I enjoyed R1 far more than TFA, they indeed suffer from the same reliance on the old story as each other (TFA mimicks the plot, R1 the nods and acknowledgements to ANH). The only thing I enjoyed more within R1 was that it seems more permissible to have those links. Indeed it didn’t reinvent the wheel, we were subject to clear fan-service within the cameos and the vader moments - all of which could be cut and not affect the story in any way - but such is the guilty pleasure of STAR WARS - and if it became so distant and alien from the core franchise that we love so much, we probably wouldn’t enjoy it as much at all.
A mega movie would be an epic watch, although there would need to be a large amount of visual/sound/pace adjustments to get them to match up more.
I wonder if an earlier version of the film had the team transmit the plans at a separate building? It would explain much of the missing Skarif footage.

There isn’t much I’d change really, other than introduce a crawl, and replace a number of the opening scenes with just exposition from the crawl.
Personally I’d like to have a version where you would view it prior to the OT, so numerous ‘reveals’ that relied on seeing the trilogy first (and obvious cameos) could be toned down or changed (or removed).
Vader is a bit over the top I felt - but I really enjoyed his part.
CG Tarkin was great - CG Carrie Fisher maybe less so.
When you un-tint it, much of the background CG looks even worse than it already is, so I think your original supposition is probably right - that it was hiding the limited technology of the time.
Despite its failings, it did try to apply a number of innovative approaches to film making. Shame they had to do it to star wars though, and not just make Ed the Duck 2 and screw that up instead.

Are they X-WING cockpits or something else? I guess when it comes to the PT the skies the mimit in regards to what they look like inside - as he might decide to place X-WINGs, A-WINGs etc as ‘new ships’.

I guess a PT which has as much ambiguity between itself and the OT as the OT has with the ST. We don’t see SNOKE’S rise to power, we don’t see KYLO REN born or fall, we don’t know who REY is.
Just watching the CLONE WARS sort of achieves this. So maybe something like that.
I just watched the seven samurai - so it was the closest to that I could think of to that, just with 5 less Jedi - especially as Qui-Gon dies.
If you were going to open on tatooine you could change how the characters get there, and their motives.
Qui Gon might be there alone already with the intention of recruiting Anakin.
Obi Wan might be on Coruscant already with his master Yoda.
The Naboo cruiser could blast through the blockade and land on Tatooine, where upon a chance meeting Padme pleads for help with Qui Gon, who initially doesn’t want to get involved.
Anakin could be the turning point, who only agrees to leave his family on Tatooine and train if Qui Gon agrees to help?

I’ll be honest - I don’t really have the time to commit to anything, other than just staying updated or helping with ideas. Years spent kicking around this forum has shown me that radically editting just one film can take years, and I’ve seen dozens of well intentioned projects end because they were too ambitious in the initial stages.
If you’re new to editting start small, experiment with the software and get a feel for how much work can go into the smallest edit. One of my favourite editors was a guy called SSWR who used to kick around here. Unfortunately he had to move on and many of his videos were lost - but here are a bunch if they help.

It’s nothing ‘finished’, but it is radical enough to change a character, interaction or pace of a scene. These simple edits in themselves would have taken alot of time to put together and to experiment with.
No work done at all sadly - I think I just found it created numerous plotholes. To pull it off successfully would require alot of new content too, which would be a push.
My skillbase is rather minimal - these were just pieced together years ago when I had more time!
Could R2 just be with Luke, and maybe Rey gets the ‘other half’ from the Kylo Ren during the fight?
The Rebel’s being outnumbered in space is sort of irrelevant as their plan is a quick strike - they don’t really need to out number or destroy the imperial fleet - just deliver one payload at the right time.
The battle hinges on the land battle - so surely it would make more sense if the sail barge showed up to save the day at the shield generator?
I played around with this idea ages ago - a sort of PT solution to the ROTJ problem that might be to your liking.
You’d need to joint edit this with AOTC.
In AOTC - have Jabba one of the separatist warlord. He would be bringing his Droid Legions to the cause.
In ROTJ - Jabba he has since become an underworld kingpin. you could introduce some leftover droids to his palace. He still has control of the droid fleet and legions, which lie dormant somewhere. The Han rescue is now a two-fold mission. Rescue Han, but also gain control of the droid army.
This was originally part of a much larger idea if you are interested - where ROTJ is set much later and the Rebels are now much more powerful.
The crawl would establish that through a daring attack, the now huge rebel movement has gained control of the surprisingly lightly defended imperial capital. They discover the plans for the DEATH STAR II, however because of the relentlessly attacking Imperial fleet, they can do nothing to stop it’s construction.
Leia and Lando go to rescue Han from Jabba, but also to seize the ‘key’ to the droid fleet (I’d assume it would be an extra character that they could abduct during the sail barge sequence who would have appeared in AOTC.)
Endor would now be a droid control station, which is lightly guarded by imperials. Perhaps R2D2 would ultimately control the entire droid armada?
The Emperor would reveal that he allowed the Rebels to capture Coruscant, knowing that ALL their resources and staff would be put in one place, and by destroying the city planet, he could ultimately stop their cause. A hornet’s nest sort of trap.
TV series edits have potential, but it would be good to go beyond just retelling the films as they stand. Each episode could have a focus.
