Info & Idea: Editing '2010: The Year We Make Contact'
Time

Ice said:

I was watching 2010 the other day, and though of a few things for a fan edit project.

I love the film as is, and I don’t feel it really needs any alterations; however there are a few ideas to help it be a little closer in tone to 2001, yet still have it retain its own identity. Pretty much all of these ideas involve the audio rather than the picture, with one exception.

1: The 80s score sounds a bit dated. So changing to classical music (preferably lesser known works than 2001, and more Khachaturian to fit the Soviet scenes) for certain scenes might make a difference. Any suggestions welcome.

2: We have sound in space in this film which was not present in 2001, and could be removed for exterior shots.

3: I never liked the sound of Floyd’s narration; it sounds like it has a lot of reverb and was recorded in another room than the mic. Also I think there is a lot more narration than necessary. So I would edit the narration length down, and to filter it so it sounds like he is talking over the radio and have them played over exterior space-travel shots.

4: I never really liked the “Bowman visits wife & mother on earth” shots; and I’m considering cutting them altogether.

Any thoughts?

Well, the Bowman visit to his former wife Betty and his Mother are in the novel so why cut them out. It’s an acknowledgement that there is still some of his old self inside the Star child. Could try and cut the Cold War stuff as this seriously dates the film. Could replace the USSR patches with Russian Federation flags?

When I first did my edit it was only the second time I had attempted such a thing. For ages I wanted to at least go back to my original files spread across 20 DVDs and at least do a remaster. But I recently imported those files to my PC and I’m not happy with the quality. So I’m doing a reconstruction from better source materials. This will included fixing some glitches and making some changes to my edit.

Stay tuned.

Looking forward to this, are these from BD or DVD sources?

Bluray for the regular footage. But most of the deleted footage is SD quality. I’m finding lots of little glitches from the initial edit that I’m fixing now as well.

Would Topaz Gigapixel AI be of use in dealing with the SD deleted scenes?

Never heard of it actually

I’d be happy to help you upscale some stuff, I’ve been messing around with upscaling DS9 and come up with some pretty good techniques to get the most out of Topaz Video Enhance AI. Just chuck me a PM if you’re interested

Do you have your own copy of Topaz? I downloaded it and it was too much for my PC. So I ended up paying Topaz themselves and uploaded a bunch of the cut scenes and I honestly didn’t see that much of a difference in the quality.

Topaz upscaled for you, how much was that??? Do you still have a kidney 😉 Would be interested in seeing the results of their work 👍

They upscalked about 10 min for me. It was about $20

2 dollars a minute, not as bad as I thought 👍

CABAL (Alternate extended cut of Nightbreed) (Released)
Time

orchidal said:

I say this as someone who’s now seen all existing cuts (Theatrical, DC, and Cabal) with virtually zero nostalgia for Nightbreed (and I’ve only recently seen each of these):

Really appreciate this cut and prefer it to the DC. However with all its efforts to fix a messy film comes more flaws of its OWN. Added/extended scenes/audio samples are just too rough and in need of HD restoration. also while the narrative is more well rounded, the runtime is a bit daunting for this sort of horror/fantasy subject matter.

A film like this actually works best under 2hrs long (ie Theatrical Cut). A shame there isnt an edit in process which considers the balance of runtime and story.

Nightbreed isn’t Apocalypse Now, extending it and making its narrative more robust kinda ruins the weird trip rather than enhances it (Redux inversely enhances the experience of Apocalypse Now). I wish for a future edit based on Cabal Cut which enhances narrative minimally while focusing on the additional sfx/creature moments (as well as Decker moments). While character motivations make much more sense in the Cabal Cut they simply aren’t interesting enough themselves to care about. Until then sticking to the theatrical for rewatches. Perhaps the conclusion I’m drawing here is that despite Cabal Cut being a noble effort, Nightbreed feels more appropriately enjoyed as a truncated horror-fantasy sfx mess. It’s at least more coherent than your average Zack Snyder film.

So you wouldn’t be interested in the Ultimate Cabal cut of 3 hours and 19 minutes then…

Help: looking for... Prometheus fan edits

Hi b5historyman,

There are two Prometheus fan edits listed in the An Index & Help Thread for Fan Edits and Projects for Other Properties… which may be of interest.

FanEdit’s https://ifdb.fanedit.org came up with four Prometheus fan edits on there.

Alternatively, FanEdit•info has three Prometheus fan edits listed.

And a quick online search for ‘Prometheus fan edits’ seems to indicate there are a fair few more out there and available too 👍

The An Info & Help Thread for the ‘Fan Edits and Projects for Other Properties’ section… (Searches, FAQs, ‘Where can I find x?’, ‘Is there an Edit of film x?’, Myspleen, and more…) may also be of some help for searching for projects and edits etc, as well as the ‘How do I do this?’ on the OriginalTrilogy.com thread too.

Good luck with it mate 😃

Apologies, my blood glucose readings were low when I responded (I’m insulin, dependant). I appreciate the help and where to look.

Thanks

Don’t you think I hadn’t already checked? Since there’s been a lack of responses from some of the fan editors on their Prometheus projects, here and on fanedit I was taking a punt that other forum members might have links to the different edits and be willing to share links by pm.

Guess I was hoping too much. Ah well.

Alien (1979): Ripley Does Dallas Edition (Extended) (Released)
Time

A few remarks from me.

  1. We don’t need to know about everything we don’t see.
It’s pretty irrelevant why the cage is there.
On the contrary when something remains in the dark, there is room for mystery and speculation.
Hitchcock was a master in this discipline, or do you want to know why the birds became aggressive and why they suddenly calmed down again? 😉
  2. I do not believe that the alien is only keen on humans and has spared the cat, but that the cat could escape (see point 1 speculations).
  3. If you integrate the Dallas death scene, there are continuity flaws to Cameron’s “Aliens”!
As a reminder: When the camera shots show the cocoons, Ripley tells Lieutenant Gorman that she’s never seen anything like this before!
  4. I don’t know if you have the technical skills, but it would be nice if someone could finally remove Ripley’s nosebleed before the fight with Ash! Because the nosebleed results from a previously shoted scene that was never used and fell under the cutting table!
In contrast to the cage question of the cat, this scene makes no sense at all. Why does Ripley bleed out of her nose while talking to Ash?

Otherwise, I wish you a lot of interest in your work. 😃

Actually the Alien Queen does not contradict the cocoon scene in Alien (let’s get it right what came first) As I am the guy who mapped the life cycle for the Aliens:Colonial Marines Technical Manual. Brett was being transformed into an egg that would contain a face hugger that would attach to Dallas and implant a Queen embryo. If the cycle had been able to continue, the Queen would have emerged and the Alien would have fed it to maturity and then mate with it. The Queen would then lay her eggs. The Alien itself would eventually die (akin to some insects after mating). This cycle is what happened aboard the Space Jockey juggernaught. If they (Kane/Lambert/Dallas) had investigated the derelict hold, they would have found the fossilised remains of a Queen and at least one Alien. As for it being Cameron’s idea, I don’t think it’s the case, especially when you look at Giger’s Alien book and the painting “Alien IV” You can clearly see where he got the idea from.
