Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Despecialized Edition HD - V3.1
Time

I haven’t had a chance to sit down and watch this straight through just yet, but the opening act is the best I’ve ever seen this movie since I saw in theaters as a child. I can’t wait to show these to our newborn son once he gets healthy and out of the hospital. I hope he finds the same joy I did in these films but want to make sure his first viewing is of the theatrical versions.

Also, did everyone else not get trailers? Was this them trying to make it like a 1977 experience? Were there trailers after the film? I was really surprised to have it start immediately after the lights went down.

I thought that my midnight showing was going to actually be just after midnight. In fact we had to sit through a load of crap adverts and trailers, the only trailer worth watching was Captain America Civil War.
The adverts went on and on and people were getting quite vocal about it. When the copyright card came up, everyone thought that the film was going to start…nope, we had another long trailer about some video game. By this time people were shouting to get the film on, enough is enough.
So, about 12:40 the film started. I got home at 03:30.
Thanks Cineworld.

Thankfully our theater had the good sense to start the advertising while they were seating everyone. They tend to go on for about 45 minutes before the film and repeat the same ads at least 3 times, there was so many people talking you really couldn’t hear them last night though. My favourite pre-film conversation had to be the guys directly behind us all trying to quote the “I don’t like sand” line as poorly as it originally sounded.

Now, on to the movie itself. I really, really enjoyed it. Is it a flawless, perfect film? Not by any stretch of the imagination, but the good far surpasses the bad and makes for an enjoyable film experience. The main characters are so likeable and vibrant that it was easy to accept them alongside the returning cast members. The pacing was breakneck, which after the prequels was a warm welcome and worked overall but only hurt a little as a few secondary characters like Poe and especially Captain Phasma were left with little to nothing to do in the script. Daisy Ridley was great as Rey though, she really held the movie together with her performance. It’s also nice to see that John Boyega does a bit more than pants and sweats throughout the film. He’s really funny in all the right ways and charming as Finn. Kylo Ren may be the best character in the film though. The idea of Han and Leias son being obsessed with the dark side and Vader is not wholly original but logical and seeing Adam Driver pull this character off with his struggle with keeping in the dark side while being tempted by the light is a joy to watch. The main thing that really hurt this movie for me was that it really was a glorified remake of the original film. I really wish they could have found a better plot point than yet another planet destroying superweapon, it felt tacked on and not nearly as important as the drama between Han and Kylo and the rest of the cast. This along with a few ‘what a coincidence’ moments and some really sloppy editing in the Han and Leia reunion scene are my only real big complaints with this film storywise. Overall I was really impressed with the cinematography though as the decision to go as practical as possible payed off big time and JJ kept his love of shaky-cam and lens flares in check and we got lots of wide sweeping shots that look fantastic. The use of so much practical effects do make some of the cgi stand way out though. Those creatures on Han and Chewie’s ship stick out and Snoke looked Hobbit level bad, though to be fair he was a hologram through the whole film so I’m hoping they can refine his look when we see him in Episodes 8 and 9. Maz Kanata worked though, she looked great if not 100% past that uncanny valley yet, it’s never jarring though.

Overall, I had fun with it, it was what it needed to be which was good, if a bit safe and overly familiar. I’m going to see it again tomorrow night and see how well it holds up on a second view.

The new Star Wars comics - a general discussion thread
Time

I tend to agree that Princess Leia was rushed with generally poor art. Waid I generally like most of the things I've read from him, he's a very strong superhero writer but I'm thinking maybe Star Wars was too far out of his comfort zone. Lando I really enjoyed the first issue of. I wasn't crazy about how verbose Lobot was but they did a great job capturing the voice and feeling of the Lando character. Alex Maleev's artwork is  fantastic as well!

Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released)
Time

I just got around to watching version 2.0 today and can't say enough good things about it. A friend popped in right during the end and was commenting on how good it looked just from the last few minutes of the film. Thank you for all that you do, I just want to be able to hold on to these memories of the things I love and enjoy. I gets harder the older I get to really have that sense of wonder that these films gave me growing up, especially with all the tinkering that Lucas has done to them over the years, this really brought out that sense and makes me ready to see what you do with Jedi now!

I'm really not trying to derail this thread but I have to say physical media is not even close to being dead. I may come from a bias as I have close to 1000 DVDs and blu-rays, but considering that even Microsoft has adopted the format recently and sales going strong throughout the world (the US in its backwards way of thinking seems to be pushing for online streaming content with some of the slowest Internet speeds in the developed world. I've seriously shut down Netflix in the middle of watching stuff because of how uneven the quality is, catching up on Doctor Who recently, I'd have an episode fluctuate between 1080, 480, and 240 in one scene. It was a major distraction!). Germany apparently is thriving on blu-ray sales and big box stores are expanding their selections due to the demand for it in that country.

Sorry for the off topic rant guys, hope everyone is having an awesome holiday! I'll be off to the mountains in the morning to celebrate with my girlfriends family as my family did everything last weekend.

Doctor Who

I absolutely loved the special, sure there might have been some minor nitpicks here or there but the mass majority of the special was so well done and acted that I can't dwell on Very minor problems I may have had. Definitely a day one pick up for blu-ray for me! My girlfriend basically tore the special to pieces nitpicking everything she could while watching it though.

Just random breaking up of this discussion, but I have to say that I love the warm golden color scheme that Tatooine has in this version. It feels very natural to me, and I never got to see the film in a theater.

I saw this movie in the theater many times — one of the benefits of having had divorced parents was that I could see any movie I liked twice as many times, and it wasn't too difficult to convince my parents to go see Star Wars — and while memory is a notoriously unreliable yardstick (and these are memories of events over two decades ago), Harmy's 2.1 version, with the revised color palette, had such a familiar sense, so much “clicked into place” so to speak, that no other home video presentation of this film has ever done for me before. It just feels right.

I technically did see Star Wars in the theater when then the special editions were released, but the second I saw the Jawas knocked off the dinosaur it no longer gave me that positive lasting impression I got when I saw the originals on vhs as a kid. I always felt like vhs was of low quality video and color wise so I had no barometer to judge the color by, I'm glad to see that people who saw it originally do get the same 'this just looks right' feeling I get watching this version!

AVCHD DVD9 disk
Time

So a while back I burned a copy of Star Wars DE 2.1 to a DVD9 with imgburn with no problems, it looks and sounds great. I go to burn Empire a few days ago and finally go to sit down and watch it today and it keeps freezing up on me right around the midway point. I'm burning the disk the same way as I did with Star Wars and for some reason I can't get this to work for me after 2 disks it does the same. I've checked the actual file it's from and it plays with no freeze up whatsoever. I'm a bit of noob when it comes to burning these things, so any help would be appreciated.

Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Despecialized Edition HD - V3.1
Time

I'm on Harmy's side on this, I personally feel like a movie should be a testament to where you were at the time as a film maker. If he didn't like the matte lines in the effects he should just worked harder in his next effort to cover them up better. At the very least he could present the film as it was originally shot alongside with the special edition versions. Just my two cents on the matter though.

I don't even want to say how many hours I just spent reading this thread, but I just have to say a big thanks for the work you're doing. I only wish that someone at Disney/Fox would pay attention to the work guys like you are doing and release these films properly (I'm cautiously optimistic about the future of the original trilogy now that it's no longer Lucas decision what to do with the films).
