So... The Clone Wars "movie"...

He'll never let go of SW; I guess it is grafted onto his body now, and will keep going many decades and decades...

My God, that's a horrible image...

I take your point, SilverWook... and I agree that it would be a sad thing if all amimation looked like Pixar's... but I've not seen any CG-animation films that have topped Pixar's for eye-popdom (I acknowledge that that may be due to my not seeing the other good stuff out there) or for storytelling... I don't think the animation in Clone Wars was that good... I didn't think much of the character design either but that's not specifically what I'm getting at here... it's the actual animation... considering how far the form has come in the last 10 years or so, I thought Clone Wars was pretty poor...

Looks like the prequels are not aging well.
Time

Already has done, in fact... SW77 & ESB are standing the test of time very, very well (if you discount the various SEs)... TPM on the other hand... only 10 years down the line and it looks even more like a painfully average bit of sub-Disney-live-action-kids-movie-fluff than it did originally... the sporadic flashes of po-faced lightsabre weilding look all the more out of place now... adrift, as they are, in a sea of twee... SW77 was smart enough to inject a bit of fun and cynicism into the mix, in the form of Han Solo... he was the character everybody admired... not Luke or Obi-Wan... it's been said many times... the PT needed the smartness of a Han Solo in there for the 'straight' characters to work off... someone to cut through the pomposity with a well-delivered quip or flirtatious one-liner...

Star Wars in the '90s?
Time

I think the Luca$hcow was in full flow by the time the SE/PT build-up started, though... the merchandising overload in the late 90s made it seem like there was more excitement in the general public but I reckon it was actually less than during the early 80s... not being a total idiot, in business terms, Luca$h probably realised he'd have to push much harder to get TPM to a similar level of success as the OT...

I finally watched it the other day… would have benefited from having the running-time of an episode from Tartakovsky’s show… not enough plot to go round… but anyhoo…

I seem to recall Luca$h trying to sell this as really advanced animation in the pre-release hype… but it looked pretty ordinary to my eyes… was I missing something?.. it didn’t look anything like as good as the kind of stuff other studios are putting out… didn’t Luca$h have something to do with Pixar once?.. why couldn’t they have done it?.. they might have been able to fix up a halfway decent story and some engaging characters while they were at it…

By the way… one for the UK members… why did Jabba and all his relations suddenly look like variations of Cosgrove Hall’s Mr Toad?!

... the real height of Star Wars was when the original movies were current (77-83). That was the time it was all at its coolest. Even if we were just kids. Extend that to '84 or even '85 for immediate aftermath time if you like, but by '86 the height of Star Wars was over and never to return.

True... true... the resurgence in the run-up to the SEs and then TPM never reached the heights of the early 80s, you're right...

I really hope that this comes true... I remember lots of people, not just me, saying that the PT would be shown up as the crap it is over time... that 30 years after the PT, people will not love those films like people still loved the OT in '97... I just hope that in 2029 I can have a good laugh to myself about how much Luca$h threw away the respect SW had by treating the OT the way he has... thing is, he's in it for the money, so not much hope of him giving a toss anyway...

I think your thoughts tie in well with how many of us feel here... Luca$h took things in the direction he wanted... and it wasn't a path I wanted to walk with him... I agree that things got more exciting towards the end of the 90s... with the special editions coming out and then TPM... which, of course, is where it all came crashing down for me... TPM?... more like WTF...

What do you think? What the hell was Leia doing at Tatooine at the start of ANH?!

I could have just made this up, but I seem to remember either from the novel or the radio drama that she knew she wouldn't make it all the way to Alderaan with that Star destroyer on her tail so she takes a quick detour to Tatooine (which en route, apparently) where she knows she has a friend in Obi-Wan.

Like I said... could have just made all that up!

Ah! So she goes to Tatooine specifically to pass the DS plans on to Ben because she knows she won't be able to get them to Alderaan herself?

But then why would she refer to a "mission to bring (Ben) to Alderaan" in her hologram?

"Harry Palmer" Films (The Thinking Man's James Bond)

No, I'd say Ludlum was going for a different thing. You could compare them in terms of their "anti-Bond" aesthetics but, as far as Jason Bourne and Hairy (thanks, ADM! ) Palmer go, they are very different. Hairy is no superman. He's an ex-squaddie who was moved into the secret service because he was just too shifty (and, often, lazy!) for the regular army! In many ways, he is the antithesis of Jason Bourne.

I don’t know if this is something debated here before, so apologies if so!

What the hell was Leia doing at Tatooine at the start of ANH?!

As the opening crawl informs us, she’s “rac(ing) home … custodian of the stolen plans yadayadayada”, right? And, as we find out a few seconds in, she’s got The Emperor’s right hand man on her tail in a fucking Star Destroyer! So, if you’ll pardon me, what the fuck is she doing choosing that time to go looking for one of her Dad’s old war pals!!!

Any thoughts?
