Return of the Jedi: Radical Re-Edit (Released)
Time

Up until this week Leia wasn't Luke's sister in this edit - the problem is, why does Luke finally attack Vader if it's not about Vader mentioning/threatening his sister?

daneditor and I have been bouncing some ideas around about how to solve this little problem.  I believe his original intention was to remove the sibling subplot completely; after all it is called the Radical Re-Edit.

IMO Lucas never should have put the subplot in the story but rather should have developed Luke's story in more depth or added more to the Han/Leia story besides Han's jealousy.  The whole Luke/Leia thing comes off as an afterthought and just doesn't seem to pay off.

The key to solving this problem is already in the film: The Emperor causes Luke to lose it, not Vader.  Remember the Emperor spends 20 minutes goading Luke about how his friends will die and then starts vaporizing Rebel fighters.  After that he tempts Luke to strike him down with all of his hate, which he attempts to do.  So here we go:

I've made my own clip to demonstrate how this could work.  I've shown this to daneditor; he liked it but wanted feedback from others.  So here it is, let us know what you think:

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

I don't mind being told I'm not a real fan, I don't like the word anyway and I like even less what it seems to represent these days.

I guess that's a more to the point way of saying what I was trying to say.  Thanks, Harmy.  :)

In the dictionary "Fan" actually is a person enthusiastically interested in a diversion (such as sports) and could mean the same as fanatic: to be excessively interested in something.  I don't really consider myself to be excessively interested  in anything enough to fit that definition, yet here I am.

Anyway, how can you be accused of not liking Star Wars by preferring the original films - the very essence of what Star Wars was and is?

With all these idiots wanting the OT puppet Yoda replaced by the CG version because "it doesn't look like the PT version", defending the colouring of the 2004 DVD set saying "it makes the films look better" and "it makes them more atmospheric", "the model work on the OT looks Fake and that it should be redone with CG" etc etc etc, i'm finding myself more and more disillusioned about being a Star Wars fan if this is what the fan base is becoming.

Well, according to these people you're not a "real" Star Wars fan anyway.  Kenkraly says if you don't like the prequels you are not a "real" fan.

I guess if we have the choice of enjoying beautifully restored classic films or being "Real Star Wars Fans" then I'll go with the Classics.  I guess I'm just not a fan.

I'm sick of people saying we already have the OUT on dvd and saying that it wouldn't look good in HD.

Have they never heard of restoration?  We have films from the 30's and 40's in HD and yet a film from the 70's "wouldn't look good in 1080p".  Don't they realize the original films aren't VHS or laserdisc quality?

It really is frustrating sometimes.  Thank God for Harmy's Despecialized and Dark Jedi's projects.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

Harmy,

I've taken plenty of time to view this before giving feedback.  Of course, everyone has told you how great it is and I whole-heartedly agree.

The first viewing I was so caught up the technical details, trying to see how well the shots blended and paying close attention to the colors.  I think the shots you recomposited are fantastic; the upscaled GOUT fits well; I especially like the entire Mos Eisley sequence (no more stupid rontos and dewbacks blocking the screen); the original shots of the X wings in front of the gas planet; and all the original Yavin shots.  It was great not having to look at all that ugly cgi.  It just doesn't belong there.

All those re-colored flashes and lasers make a huge difference.  The sickly feelings of watching the 2004 version are all gone; that version is like looking through a dark tinted car window with pink (and blue) goggles. It is so refreshing to look at what you've done.

I know you couldn't fix the duel lightsabers, which is a bummer, but they do look better.  I miss that retro animated look of the original, but I guess there's always GOUT sourced projects If I want to see it.

The second viewing I was able to just sit back and relax and watch the film, and it was a happy experience indeed.  The Death Star battle really shines here; the 2004 version seems dull compared to this.  It has been a while since the film was so much fun.  It's similar to when I first saw Ady's Revisited, only better!

Anyway, thanks for taking all the time and effort to do this, you've made us all very happy;  and thanks to Adywan and hairy hen and everyone else! :)

I disagree with Stinky.  I'm also tired of the sickly looking tones of the SE.  I don't think your project should look like GOUT.  We don't need GOUT; we've got it.   Your color choices are fine with me as well as many of us.  I think you've created something we can all be happy with.

"You're all clear kid. Now let's [not] blow this thing and go home." :)

PS thanks for all the hard painstaking work.

Harmy, the lasers and flashes look great to me.  I just compared it with GOUT and didn't see any problems.

Also, someone mentioned the lightsaber looking orange; I wouldn't worry about that because in some GOUT shots Vader's saber had a bit of orange tint.  Not that I'm saying the GOUT is accurate, but I'm sure what you are doing will be light years better than '04.

I understand it will be hard to get the original look of the sabers; the old rotoscoping has sort of a flicker to it that is sorely missing in the 2004 version.  I don't know if Adywan fixed it or if you will; but like I say it's bound  to be better than '04.

I'm far more excited by these projects than the official blu-ray 'event'.

Thanks Harmy - and indeed to all others here - for spending so much time and effort in keeping the original version of this film alive.

I was thinking the exact same things.  This is quite possibly the closest thing we'll ever have to the restored original film and I'm grateful for the efforts of all who have have color corrected, upscaled, edited, rotoscoped and generally restored what should have been left alone.  Thanks!

I just read some mildly interesting reviews of the blu ray releases over at Amazon.  It looks like several people view things the way we do, but there are still the hordes of LFL worshippers defending everything Lucas has done to degrade the films.

I know its been said over and over but Star Wars is not what it used to be (to the masses, anyway).  I think the changes to the overall genre happened so gradually that the general public didn't even notice what was taking place.

How can they even honestly call it the 'original trilogy'?

What do you LIKE about the EU?
Time

I liked the early 90's Classic Star Wars comics, which reprinted and edited the 1981 -1983 Goodwin / Williamson comic strips.  They aren't very intellectually stimulating, some of the stories a little over the top, but the art was nice; and they very much  had the OT era feel.  The stories were not as ridiculous as the Marvel series, probably because they were written for the strip format.

There's some neat stuff about Han and the bounty hunters, Luke spying on the construction of the Executor, an imperial admiral plot to kill Vader, an unlikely discovery of and escape to Hoth, some guy pretending to be Obi Wan, some space pirates and spice mine adventures, and even Jabba makes a brief appearance.

Like pretty much all of the EU, it's totally unnecessary and speculative, taking liberties with situations and characters that don't go over well with everyone, but when I was 12 it was very entertaining and imaginative.
