"Doctor Who" (1996) at proper speed [AUDIO FINISHED; VIDEO SECOND PASS IN PROGRESS]

Likely the same problems, but at higher resolution, so it might be easier to correct? I don’t know. Don’t have the BR, but I may pick it up at some point and resurrect this project. I’ll update the OP if and when that happens, but don’t hold your breath - if someone else wants to tackle this, by all means, go for it!

I have the Blu Ray but no BD drive, but I did find a 1080p rip from UseNet and had a quick mess-around with tsmuxer to see what it would be like when slowed down to 24fps. I’m just figuring out the best way to slow the DTS audio down.

EDIT - Used Audacity to slow down audio to 24fps and have remuxed new audio and video together. Syncs up perfectly and overall looks pretty good IMO. If anyone wants to take a look at it and give their expert opinion, feel free to PM me.

The Blackadder

Only noticed that yesterday!

Has anyone tried to reinsert that deleted line from Blackadder’s Christmas Carol from any off-air recordings? I think the only uncut release was the original Region 1 DVD released around 2001 but no PAL release (DVD or VHS) has the uncut version. GOLD tend to broadcast the uncut version and the UK Netflix also had it last time I checked.

Dek’s restoration is great! Thanks for all your hard work. I’m not that experienced or knowledgeable with things like interlacing or anything like that but the 24-25fps conversion was great. I just figured the native 1080i50 source would have been better to work with from a purist standpoint but this current preservation will certainly do for now. Thanks again. 😄

I didn’t think there were multiple HD sources. Is the AUS Blu-ray actually a different source than the 2009 release?

I have this:

http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Wallace-and-Gromit-The-Complete-Collection-Blu-ray/5984/

The AUS 2016 Blu Ray was resourced from the original film negatives and maintained the original 25fps framerate, whereas the 2009 Blu Ray which is currently available in UK and US had the first 3 shorts slowed down to 24fps.

Another thing worth mentioning about the AUS Blu Ray (and I believe the original 2009 BD) is A Close Shave has been cropped to 16:9 wheres when originally broadcast on BBC1 back in 1995 and on my 2005 PAL DVD, it’s 4:3 open matte.

On my (US) DVD it definitely sounds different, so I assumed it was changed on all releases like everything else.

I just found this out as I was trying to do a restored audio track pasting the original unaltered segments over the altered ones which could be used with PAL DVD’s or the AUS Blu Ray.

I’ve just finished doing it and saved it to WAV and AC3 as well so it’s ready for muxing.

  • As Gromit eats his cereal, the original audio coming from his small television is now present

This segment of audio is already present on my 2005 PAL DVD. I did a comparison with Audacity and it’s identical. Maybe is was removed/altered on the US versions?

EDIT - My bad, they’re not identical. The original version uses the Open University Theme and the DVD uses slightly different music.

Hi all

I am a casual fan of the Wallace and Gromit adventures. I wasn’t aware it was a victim of music cuts (one of my pet hates!)
I have the UK DVD release from 2000. Does anyone know if this is an uncut version? I know it will be the correct framerate, and would be happy to provide a PAL sync to the TV rip if it is required. Ideally the Australian Blu-ray would be the best visual source, but no-one around here seems to have access to it…

All UK PAL DVD’s have the music edits. I have the AUS BD but sadly no Blu Ray drive to rip it with.

Ah that’s a shame.
Ironically I have a Blu-ray drive for ripping, but no disc to rip!

It is, nevermind. I picked my copy up about a year ago from Amazon.co.uk when they were selling it there under the guidance that someone at BluRay.com claimed it also had the original unaltered audio for TWT, only for me to find out when it arrived that this was not the case. Still, and HD version of all 4 TV specials at the correct playspeed is still a win as the UK BD is 24fps. You can still find the AUS BD on eBay for under £15 incase anyone who has a BD drive wants to rip it. I’d he happy for now with a PAL DVD/TVrip sync though.

Was it animated at 25fps? I remember reading that the Wallace and Gromit shorts were shown on film in addition to TV broadcast, but I could be wrong.

It was shot at 25fps which I think was common practice for TV films at the time. On a side note, the audio commentary with Nick Park from my 2005 “3 Cracking Adventures!” DVD has the original audio intact but of course gets talked over some parts. I can upload that if anyone wants to mux that in.

There is an Australian Blu Ray called “Wallace & Gromit: The Collection” released by ABC in 2016 that is 1080/50i. It has the same music alterations as other BD/DVD releases but is the highest quality with the correct speed/pitch.

http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Wallace-and-Gromit-The-Collection-Blu-ray/160598/

I also managed to grab a TVrip of The Wrong Trousers from UseNet which was recorded from BBC One around Christmas 2007 which has the original audio. One problem with this one though is that it has a voice-over/announcer at the end credits. I don’t have any means of ripping my AUS BD but if anyone wants me to share my BBC TVrip, I’d be happy to upload it somewhere.

I was thinking these two sources could be muxed together without any need to re-pitch anything and create the highest quality version.

Do these animation films need preservation?
Time

Wallace and Gromit in The Wrong Trousers original broadcast audio track containing the licensed music still need preserving. The original 1993 VHS has it and I managed to grab a PDTV rip from a 2007 BBC1 broadcast which is as-broadcast from UseNet recently. The only drawback is it has a voice-over talking over some of the end credits. The vital elemants can be inserted into the DVD audio track and muxed with the PAL DVD or the Australian 2016 50i Blu Ray.

EDIT - This has been done now;

Info: Re-mixed audio tracks on video releases
Time

Here’s hoping. I had Grease on VHS back in 1996 (which I recently discovered I still have) and I did have the DVD at one point but that got sold. I’m assuming my VHS had the original sound mix but haven’t had a chance to check. I’ve never owned it on Blu Ray so if this 4K release is decent I’ll pick it up. Has anyone tried to sync any pre-98 mix up with the current Blu Ray yet?

Ghostbusters - Criterion PCM Track (see Jonno's post; plus lots more info) (Released)
Time

Just comparing two HDTV rips I have of Ghostbusters II (a 1080i one and a 720p one) assuming they both used the 2005 master and I noticed my 720 version (which is sourced from another 1080i HDTV version) has a slightly different colour grading altogether from the 1999, 2005 and 2014 masters. Just looking at the first establishing shot of the museum, it’s slightly brighter/less brown than 1999 and 2005 but not as blue as 2014. The frame is as wide as 1999 but slightly less image on top and bottom compared to the 2005 1080i HDTV I have. I don’t know if it’s my eyes and the fact that it’s quite late in the evening and I’m tired but it looks different to me. The 720p HDTV I’m referring to is still out there if you look in the right places and was uploaded in 2011 if anyone wants to see for themselves.

EDIT: According to this great site (https://www.theraffon.net/~spookcentral/gb2_homevid_compare.htm) there was a DVD released in 2017 containing GBI & II and for GBII a 2010 HDTV master was used rather than the 2014 Blu Ray master and the screen comparisons used appear to be the same as the 720p HDTV capture I have.
