18% of LD owners cite Star Wars as a main reason for keeping obsolete format
Time
I have a Pionieer CLD-3070 and I've got a handful of discs I've copied to DVD the old fashioned way - patch cables from one machine to the other. I'm not going to throw out the player or discs...at least not anytime soon...but I'm at least working on getting to the point of being able to put it all into storage to save space.

Help: looking for... Star Wars - Electric Moog Orchestra
Time
I have the blue cover version in storage somewhere, but that's interesting that they tried to copy the black cover so closely. Then again, I still have my "SST Lazer Sword", and even though the instructions are gone, I specifically remember an order form in it for a "duelling outfit" that was essentially a simplified version (if that's even possible) of Luke's ANH costume.

blowing up things SW style

There were plenty of real elements used in the PT, Lucas just doesn't want to admit it, so all the "making of" stuff focuses on the digital work. There's a convention I go to every year and for several years one of the guests was Carol Bauman from ILM. She showed workshop pics of ILM crew working on models of Coruscant buildings and various craft from TPM and AOTC (ROTS was still in production at the time).

Various digital FX animators, ILM and otherwise, have all gone on record as saying that natural elements - water, smoke, fire, rock formations, etc. - still take a lot of work to generate in CG and look convincing, so they have to resort to the old ways for those elements, at least for now.

STAR WARS: EP V "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - 12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW
Time
Vader's line can be pieced together from elsewhere in the films.

"Set your course for the Hoth system."
"You are in command now Admiral Piett."

And I'm sure there's at least one spot where Piett says "Yes Lord Vader." The only work will be getting a Vader-ish voice to say "Endor".

Alternate idea - instead of showing DSII at the end of Empire, just imply that that's where the fleet is headed after the Falcon escapes them at Bespin.

Falcon goes to hyperspace.
Vader pondering what just happened.

Vader (walking down the length of the bridge): "Admiral Piett, set your course for the Endor system."
Piett (as Vader crosses in front of him): "Yes, Lord Vader."

Fleet goes to hyperspace.
Continue with ending of film as it exists.

If the timing is right, you won't even have to worry about lip sync. With Vader, it's just a matter of pacing for how fast he walks vs how fast the line is, and with Piett, it's a short enough line that he should be able to get it off during that second or so that Vader's cape blocks our view of him.

We don't need to see DSII. For the people who know what happens at the opening of Jedi, this scene is an easter egg. For people who don't know (kids of the future), it will give them something to reference back to when they do see Jedi... "Ah, so THAT'S why the fleet went to Endor at the end of Empire!"

This way, the implication is that DSII has been under construction for a while and going there is just a matter of "getting on with business".

Labels throw off the balance of the disc. Your DVD player will fail sooner than it would of because of the labels....labels are a bad idea.

What's the hard comparison though...9 years vs 3 years or 9 years vs 8.5 years? If it's not an appreciable loss, then why worry? You're going to have to replace your hardware every now and then anyway.

The cover link is already up at fanedit.org, so even if it gets lost here, it's over there.

Oh, and, for whatever difference it makes, the disc label Ady posted with the cover has a silver SW logo where the label he posted previously has a gold logo. Just something to track down for those that want the disc to match the cover if they don't use his.

It wasn't an issue until LFL decided to hang a carrot out in front of us with that stupid GOUT release. It would've been better had he just not released it, unless of course he really does plan on that being the last time he ever does it. But, at the end of the day, I just have to remind myself that it's coming, eventually...

And this is why I believe that the OOT will eventually get a proper release. How many times over the years of VHS and LaserDisc was the trilogy released "for the last time ever!!!"? Gotta be at least a half dozen for VHS, and at least 3 for LD. When the GOUT discs came out, the rumor was that the 4 disc boxes were going away. Still plenty of them on the shelves. You telling me they're ALL 2 to 4 year old stock?

The young fans may be the ones who get the attention, but Lucas knows that the vintage fans are the ones with the real money to spend. Trust me, he's milking the SE's until the next re-release of the OOT for whatever reason he concocts at that time.

Blank DVD's: + or - ?
Time
Ok, I've wondered this for a long time...in general, is it better to use + or - discs? I've used both, depending what's on sale at the time I need them, of various brands, but haven't found any patterns as to compatibility with stand-alone DVD players, reliability, number of coasters, or anything else, but then again, I don't know what else to watch out for.

So, what do you prefer? Is one overall better than the other? How can I tell if what I'm using is good or bad (aside from the obvious of the disc being unreadable/unwriteable)?

No, only the scenes they changed--they only needed to scan the shots that had stuff added to them. The altered shots were then printed back onto film, and re-spliced into the negative, replacing the originals. So, I would estimate about 30% of the OOT is in the computer--if it was kept at all. The negative that was scanned for the 2004 edition was the 1997 SE with the CGI, as the negative of the OOT no longer existed.

Do you know that for sure? One of the "lines" that McCallum gave on the 97 SE's was that "the negative had deteriorated so badly that if we hadn't done this restoration now, the film may have been lost forever"...which admittedly sounds to me like an "Oh no, the sky is falling" kind of comment, but I still tend to think Lucas would have scanned the entire film as a precaution and just kept it on file for future use. He seems to be a great one for planning ahead and always having that fifth ace up his sleeve.

I've been reading thru this thread trying to follow the back-and-forth of the issue and I feel like everyone keeps missing something...correct me if I'm wrong.

The first thing that was logically done to create the SE's in 97 was to digitize the theatrical cuts of the films. They had to get them INTO the computer before they could start making any changes. So logically, the OOT already exists in digital form. Whether that form is up to 1080p standards, I don't know, as the conversion would be over 10 years old at this point, but I'd imagine it's close to it considering the nature of the process and why it was being done in the first place.

I gotta go with the feeling that something is in storage for a proper OOT release, he's just waiting until he's milked the SE's as far as he can. I mean, if you go back to the various interviews over the years of the creation of the OT (77 to 83), how many times did he start contradicting himself about where the story was headed and that that direction was always his intention? Old habits die hard. He's trying to constantly come out looking like the conquering hero in spite of all the numbers showing how many soldiers he's lost.

And one more thing to consider - ANH was one of the first 25 films inducted into the National Archives as historical achievements in motion pictures...this was LONG before the SE versions, so logically a pre-SE version of the film still exists somewhere outside of Lucasland. That could always be dug out of the archives and given a new restoration and transfer.

Info & Ideas: ESB and ROTJ Wishlist
Time
I read something somewhere once, during the time in between TPM and AOTC, so we hadn't seen Mace's purple blade yet, theorizing that saber color was connected to Force orientation -

Red=Sith
Blue=Jedi
Green=Borderline, could tilt either way.

Which made sense for Luke in ROTJ as he was dancing on the border of turning to the Dark Side and for Qui-Gon in TPM since he seemed to look at the Force a little differently (Obi: "If only you would do as the Masters say, you would BE on the council", or words to that effect).

Is that for a torrent or something like RapidShare? I avoid torrents because one of the first times I tried it, I later found that while I was downloading what I wanted, the torrent app was UPLOADING RANDOM FILES FROM MY COMPUTER WITHOUT MY KNOWLEDGE!

I avoid torrents like the plague now.

You know, you can set the settings to not share things from your computer. I only use Torrrents for downloading, and it shares the one file that I'm downing at the time.

I used to share everything, till I decided not to be a dirty pirate. :-P

What's the generally accepted torrent download ap, then? I looked for settings like that in the one I had (don't remember the name) but I couldn't find anything to control external access to my machine.
