The Phantom Menace - Theatrical version scanned in 4K (a WIP)
Time

Some news about the ongoing scanning of TPM…

As usual in this kind of project, there were a lot of issues (material not delivered, optical problem, laboratory reserved by other projects, overwork, etc.)

Nevertheless, things are moving slowly but surely.

Here are two screenshots of the 35mm 4K scan compared to the HDTV (1080p) and the Bluray:

http://www.framecompare.com/screenshotcomparison/DYL7LNNX

As you will see, the Bluray shows a little more detail (because it comes from the original negative, and not from a 35mm copy based on an interpositive); however, the 35mm does not suffer from noise reduction nor “wax” effect, and the scan in 4K shows the 35mm grain that is missing on the Bluray.
In any case, the 35mm looks far better (IMHO) than the HDTV version: there is no edge enhancement, color artifacts, overzoom…

The colors are also perfectly preserved (in my opinion), I just applied a very fast regrading so that the comparison with the BR is relevant.

I will not be able to give you news too often because I have too much work, but I promise you that the project continues to move forward!

Cheers!

Star Wars: SDTV & HDTV digital broadcast * database *
Time

I’m pretty sure it will be the BR version, the listed times seems to be the BR times accelerated to 25 fps (PAL standard).
Otherwise it could be the early theatrical source (that ORF1 already broadcasted in 2014) as schorman is guessing; anyway, there is no other source such as a 35mm telecine (AFAIK).

I’ll try to capture the .TS stream (unfortunately, my IPTV provider streams ORF1 at 720p, not 1080p).

THE PHANTOM MENACE - THEATRICAL HD Topper's Version (Released)
Time

Hi RUKUSBUILD3,

The official theatrical version was available on VHS (widescreen or pan&scan, NTSC or PAL), VCD (pan&scan) and Laserdisc (widescreen).
It was also broadcasted several times on european channels (such as C+ Scandinavia and ORF1) : captures are available on torrent sites.
All those releases are issued from the same master.

I’ve decided to wait for DrDre’s next tool, which, as ZigZig said, will automatically restore deleted scenes, integrate them into the movie, upscale them to 4k and recolorize them to HDR. According to ZigZig, this tool will be compatible with MacOS, so the next tool seems like my only option. Could you please tell me when it will be ready? Thank you.

I think ZigZig may have been pulling your leg mate.

I think he knows already that: https://originaltrilogy.com/post/id/1299439/action/topic#1299439

But he is obviously trolling…

Hello. Could you please let me know when the deleted scenes are finished? I have found a color correction tool by DrDre that can match colors. Thank you.

Please just wait for the next DrDre’s tool: it will automatically restore deleted scenes, integrate them into the movie, upscale them to 4k and recolorize them in HDR.
And besides, this tool will be compatible with Mac OSX.

PS: it even seems that it will be able to possibly fix The Last Jedi.

I don’t want to turn this thread into a debate-fest on whether or not people should be allowed to hate the PT, though maybe that’s already accomplished. 😛

yeah, i won’t bother to respond (although there is tons to say about the incredible amounts of things RLM video misinterprets, gets logically wrong, gets wrong since he doesn’t now enough about American cinema history, etc.) since will just turn into another bash fest, something I try to avoid (mostly by to largely ignoring all SW forums for years) and don’t want send this nice restoration thread down that path, I was actually going to say we better quit this before you already said it just above

back to restoration talk!

Thanks to both of you (but this debate is very interesting, even if it is off-topic) 😃
