Boycott the 2004 OT SE DVD release - c'mon, you can do it
Time
I think a better idea is one posted in the general discussion forum. Buying a few sheets of avery labels and making stickers saying Don't Buy Star Wars DVDs - Not The Original Trilogy or some such message and put them up near the local video store. Don't put them up ON the local video store or IN the local video store. That can really get you busted for vandalism.

Anyone that thinks a boycott can't work, put your money where your mouth is and boycott. Just to prove me wrong.

So cancel that pre-order. I don't have any numbers to back this one up, but a 5% loss in sales is big money. A quick search just told me that Phantom Menace sold over 2.2 million copies its first week on the shelves. If the Special Edition boxed set does as well, and everyone who signed the petition, including you and me, doesn't buy it, that's a loss of about $7,700,000 in expected sales. If you let the folks whos job it is to get our money know that, if they do something different, they can have that seven million, they might do something to try and get it. If not, then wait untill the price has dropped or it shows up at Costco and buy it at a discount and you still win. If we win, you win. If we loose, you still win. You can't loose.

WAS not commonly known. LOL!

Oh, that cracked me up!

I'm not sure that sending mail to Lucas' home address is appropriate, however funny and satisfying it might be. Business matters should be sent to his place of business. Sending them to his home is could be misconstrued as harrassment and therefore likely to be counterproductive.

I just pointed out in the other forum that if everyone who signed this petition refused to buy the DVD's, at about US$70 that comes to a loss in gross sales of over $4,200,000. That seems like a statistically significant amount of money. If everyone of us wrote a letter to Lucasfilm and sent an e-mail to Fox video, maybe they would do the math themselves. In fact, there are people on staff who's only job is to do the math. And even if they don't, we aren't any worse off than we were before. What do you have to loose?

Defeatist thinking leads only to defeat.

Hi again,

I don't think you have done the math I just did. If I remember right, the DVD set is going to sell for around seventy dollars US. If just the people who signed this petition decided not to buy them, that is a loss in gross sales of over $4,200,000. I know that is probably what George Lucas spend on mineral water for the year, but that is a significant amount of money, and businesses like to make money. If only the people that signed this petition wrote a letter to George Lucas and an e-mail to fox video, maybe they do the math too.

Defeatist thinking leads to just that, defeat. Even if a boycott and letter writing campaign were unsuccessful, those of us who really do want to see the orignals on DVD are are only thirty-seven cents worse off than we were. But at least we will feel like we did something about it other than finding reasons not to do anything about it. What have you got to loose?

Boycott Special Edition DVD's - I know you can do it

Hi,

You know, when consumers are unhappy with a companies choices, the strongest way to make their unhappiness known is to vote with their dollars. Petitions are great but if you have already gone out and pre-ordered the special edition DVD set, you are not doing anything to encourage Lucasfilm or Fox to release the original versions that we all obviously want to see. Don't buy the DVD's until they have the original releases on them. Write to Fox and Lucasfilm and let them know that you are not going to buy Star Wars DVD's until the original, award winning, box office record setting versions are released. Unless you withhold your money from them, all the petition signing and letter writing we do will not get their attention. We are the Star Wars customer base and have some commercial power to wield if we show some solidarity. I have e-mailed this suggestion to every Star Wars geek I know and suggest you do the same to reach those that haven't found this site.

I know you want all that extra geek stuff on the other discs, but you can get them from netflix to hold you over until the originals are released.

I look forward to seeing you all in line the day the original DVD set is released.
