The Lord of The Rings - 35MM GRADED
Time

Just wanted to say that these graded 35mm scans are absolutely gorgeous! None of the official home releases (especially 4K and Blu-ray ones) come close. This feels and looks like Middle-earth. Thank you remsouille for doing these!

Now if there was only someone capable and keen on cleaning up all the dirt, scratches etc. then we would have perfect release on our hands, the one to rule them all. But I realise that is a Herculean task.

You should try and do it yourself, give yourself that challenge.

Yeah, Star Wars is broken beyond repair. If nothing else, Acolyte has shown me this.

How people can say that this episode destroyed the canon and at the same time praise Obi Wan is beyond me. My best guess is that they only want to watch flashy images that seem familiar without thinking about it.

Then there is the corner thet gets upset if there are not enough white Cis males in the material… There has been so much wrong with these productions… If this is your leading argument all the time… thats really telling.

And then theres the corner that just praises everything… Which kinda feels like a cult looking at it from the outside…

This whole white cis male rhetoric is one of the problems when analyzing a piece of media or a grievous. It is a little deeper than that, I think.

The Hobbit (M4 Book Edit) (Released)

I noticed that the video sources are the original Blu-Rays, and not the remastered Blu-Rays. It would be nice if a new version of this edit was made with them. Here’s where to find them:

What does M4 think of the remastered picture?

These have higher levels of DNR and tinkering.

Every singles known change in The Hobbit & The Lord of the Rings 4K
Time

Outside of the colour grading and white vignettes for flashbacks and flash-forwards which are well known and documented.

I thought it would be useful to mention obscure and not well known diversions so we can all add the relevant info. Audio changes would be more difficult, but should be included as well. Such as Gandalf not hitting the roof of the Tower of Orthanc during the Wizard’s duel.

Withdraw the Army of the Dead, or men of Dunharrow in RETURN OF THE KING after the siege on Palarguir (Pirates of Hardad). While still giving a sense of conclusion and resolution to the penultimate battle at pelennor fields.

I don’t much like the ‘green goo’ tsunami that insta-kills the orcs. I do think the Extended Edition improved it slightly as we see more of Aragorn and Gimli on the battlefield killing orcs including Gothmog, so they are still participating in the victory even after the Dead arrived.

I think the only way to accomplish it would be to have the Army of the dead arrive on the boats and join the battle but delete the shot of the green goo swarming over the Oliphaunt (Day Z style) and then flooding the streets of Gondor - really just 3 seconds of footage to cut. Replace it with some slo-mo battle footage of regular men fighting and perhaps a short voiceover by Gandalf “the turn of the tide…” to imply time passing and the battle being won, then segue into the aftermath of the battlefield.

ps. if you’re going to make an edit then also tweak Denethor’s burning man marathon run, that’s far sillier than the Army of the Dead!

Interesting ideas, of course all of those shots would have to go in an instance.
But replacing the mere presence of the Army of Dead is even more ambitious and involves a lot more digital manipulation, though it is less likely to happen.

The removal of Denethor’s marathon, although it can seem like a ridiculous scene, in reality is not quite so improbable per se. Especially if you look at the time it take for the burning of man to destroy your nervous system.

Not sure how you would transition from that scene onwards, do you cut the narration? Either way, it is of lesser importance.

'Rey Skywalker' (Upcoming live action motion picture) - general discussion thread

The thing is that no one wanted to see Luke dead in the first place, and definitely not to be replaced by Rey - a character few have grown to care for and a character we’ve not seen struggle for her achieved triumphs. It’s like sacrificing your house to buy a motorbike. It just doesn’t hold the same value to most people and will always be considered a very bad choice that people can’t fathom.

Having Luke around will only be to get the bank bucks from “The Politically-Evil Spirited Sequel Haters” and we all know it. It will hardly be satisfactory either having a beloved character that raised million of children as a blue force orb trying to teach Rey a lesson or two for the THIRD film in a row. Some people will go to the cinema and watch it, others will wait for stream - and I suspect a large amount of the fanbase here and elsewhere will torrent it in pure disdain and hatred. Either way, It’s going to make money and it’s going to be canon.

Until the day they either sell or replace the majoritfy of their staff, this is what we’re going to get and we’ll just have to bend over and either close our eyes or try to enjoy it.

Thank the maker we have brilliant faneditors that can salvage things from The Sequels for people who want to give them a new chance.

Rey Skywalker, you’re our only hope.

Forget about what has come in the last eleven years, it will be for the best. Or in any case select what few things are salvageable.

The Dead might have been able to harm. (Though I agree they couldn’t slaughter anyone with non-corporeal weapons)

We know of two instances of death occurring. One is the old man that appeared in Rohan, proclaimed some spooky shit about the Paths, and fell on his face dead. Possessed?

The other, a Prince of Rohan who ventured the Paths, came across a sealed door, and was attacked by someone from behind, leaving his legs broken - hence unable to move, he died in the dark, alone. Was it the Dead (Stalking their prey from behind, like we see in ROTK)? Or living Men?

Both are indirect ‘kills’, so the quote of “I doubt their blades would still bite” may still ring true. But interesting regardless.

That sequence is around four minutes run time. While the extended cut expands it and features a few more character moments that are of interest, including a reaction to Eomer in the aftermath of the battle from Aragorn.

The question is would digital removal be necessary? Could we generate new special effects depicting Gondorian men instead? Would any VFX artis be interested in such a task?

When a film is professionally scanned in 16-bit color as DPX image files, every single frame weighs in at 100 MB. With upwards of 175,000 frames in each film, a complete scan requires about 21 TB of storage (42 TB if you want a backup copy! And then you need at least another 21 TB of space to work on it – over $1000 just in hard drives is therefore required for every film). Having the film cleaned prior to scanning costs another $870 (plus about $75 shipping each way) and then the scanning costs between $2000 and $15,000, depending on where you send it.

Now, I would very much like some information for the scanning process of these films and whether or not they where cleaned up. Cheers!

I don’t know where you’re pulling all those prices from and numbers from, but they’re not accurate anymore (or they at least are not representative of competitive commercial rates and storage options). The price of cleaning varies wildly depending on where you go, and your weirdly specific price of $870 would equate to .054/ft if we’re talking 178 minutes of 35mm 4-perf. I know where to go for a much better rate than that.

Yes if you’re scanning 6K DPX 16-bit it’s over 100 MB per frame (around 125MB per frame I think), but that should not be necessary unless you’re dealing with very badly faded film. Backups should go on LTO-7 or LTO-8 tape (or even LTO-9 now) not on Hard Drives.

Feel free to join my Discord friend.

Thanks for the info.

Harry Potter Extended Editions (Released)

Hello dear JJpotter
i was so excided when i first heard that you’ve finally upgraded the video quality of harry potter edits, specially when you said something about using today’s technology in able to get better results, thinking that you are talking about hevc encoding using 10 bit at slow settings, but it was a bit disappointing for me that it was only 8 bit and not 10 bit,
i have “3xo” encodes which are about 7GB per movie and they still looks slightly better than your recent V2.1 encodes which are about 9 GB per movie, i know that encoding at 10 bit is more time consuming and more heavy on hardware but it is the best thar technology can offer today, it gives better results
please don’t be offended with my opinion, i thank you so much for your precious time and great efforts, and if you will ever do newer version in the near or far future, please keep the bitrate at 10.000 kbs on h265 10 bits and mkv not mp4, yes the file size would be +10GB per movie but it is so worth it, it is our favorite movie series after all, good luck.

Very much agree, quality comes first.
