Maybe just "Starkiller to Star Wars"

but I don't think it goes with the other 2 titles mayeb it would bebetter if it was a verb followed by part of the title, like building Empire and returning to jedi.

so "something verby" Star wars or "something verby" A New Hope, but it was really Starting Star Wars because a new hope came later ( did i slip a title in there ;-) )

Hope you can make your mind up Jambe, names are always the hardest part, hope you go ahead with this project.

Best Wishes

Info: a CED Star Wars Transfer (with link to info on a released OT CED project)
Time

A CED transfer of starwars has just been put up an a.b.starwars.

Can anyone tell me about CED and this release of start wars, how does the quality compare to Laser disc?

Its a 1982 release so its pre thx which might be a good thing? Also could a similar thing be done with a CED player in the way that the XØ team used the modern comb filter on a capture card to improve transfer quality?

Info Wanted: Is anyone doing a "Virtual" Lost Cut?
Time
Just found this info re the lost cut, is this the same crawl text that sluggo was trying to recreate?

From Starlog #120, July 1987:

This issue was dedicated to the 10th anniversary of "Star Wars." In
it, there is an article by Roy Thomas entitled, "How I Learned to Stop
Worrying and Love 'Star Wars' (Within Limits)" (nice "Strangelove"
homage), which features his recollections of working on the "Star
Wars" comics for Marvel.

"...anyhow, soon Howard, Steve and I were sitting in the front row in
George's private screening room while the Hollywood heavies slouched
further back with George, and the rough cut began.
It opened with a 'crawl' of copy meant to suggest the old Flash
Gordon serials that had influenced the movie. But this was NOT the
crawl with which moviegoers are now familiar, nor was there any 'Long
ago, in a galaxy far, far away' lead-in. Rather, the crawl consisted
of totally different copy telling the movie's backstory. (If you want
to know what it said, all you have to do is pick up a back issue of
Marvel's "Star Wars" #1, since the caption there was taken from that
original crawl. George evidently had last-minute thoughts and changed
it just before the opening. In fact, one ILM worker told me that the
story was that, on opening day, George would probably be in the
projection booth at Mann's, pasting on some last bit of film.) [NOTE:
Original crawl text follows this entry.]

Original opening crawl as published in the Marvel adaption of "Star
Wars" #1:

"It is a period of CIVIL WAR in the galaxy. A brave Alliance of
UNDERGROUND FREEDOM FIGHTERS has challenged the tyranny and oppression
of the awesome GALACTIC EMPIRE. To crush the rebellion once and for
all, the EMPIRE is constructing a sinister new BATTLE STATION.
Powerful enough to destroy an entire planet, its COMPLETION will spell
CERTAIN DOOM for the champions of freedom. Striking from a fortress
hidden among the billion stars of the galaxy, REBEL SPACESHIPS have
won their first victory in a battle with the powerful IMPERIAL
STARFLEET. The Empire fears that ANOTHER defeat could bring a THOUSAND
MORE solar systems into the rebellion, and IMPERIAL CONTROL over the
galaxy would be LOST FOREVER."

Then in came the spaceships. Even in the rough cut and on a
relatively small screen, it was an impressive beginning, and I was
only moderately surprised months later at Mann's Chinese to hear the
shocked gasp of the audience when Big Ship came after Little Ship.
Next, the fight: stormtroopers vs. rebels. But there were no rays
zipping back and forth across the screen in San Anselmo. Just the
flicker of hand-drawn arrows on the film, to show where the FX would
go.
Soon, Darth Vader came on and began to speak--with a British
accent. (This was actor David Prowse's own voice, before James Earl
Jones' sepulchral tones were laid in.)
The movie went on. I noted with chagrin that one scene in the
script--between Luke and some childhood chums, near the beginning--had
been CUT, though it was currently being printed in the comic's first
issue. (And a few irate readers would later castigate us for inserting
things into 'George's Movie.')"

From Screen Superstar magazine #8, "Star Wars: the Full Story," 1977:

"His editors, including his wife, Marcia (Lucas' daughters had earlier
appeared in the film as Jawas), had put together a rough cut. With
Lucas they trimmed it down to preview size. And the previews were VERY
successful. Excitement spread at Twentieth, and through the movie
colony--Lucas had a winner!
But winner or not, Lucas still wasn't entirely satisfied. The
film ran for over two hours (123 minutes), and Lucas wanted maximum
audience turnover. Thus, the film had to be UNDER two hours, so back
went Lucas and the editors, and six minutes of Biggs Darklighter,
Luke's boyhood pal and fellow rebel pilot, were trashed. The film was
finished."

I particularly like the way ocpmovie combined the Radio play audio with the tredwell scene,. The radio audio would be a great source for a reconstruction.

I really like the sequence with luke and the treadwell, throught him meeting his friends who dismiss his enthusiasm and the scene with biggs. In fact deleted magic is a great place to start from, full of exrta angled shots and extended takes.

Info Wanted: Question about 1980 uncut Empire
Time
So it can be confirmed that the preview release was different.

Ken Ralston would only have been involved in those extra special effect shots so would not necessarily have mentioned or known any other changed (cut or inserted footage) that were in this preview release, but the fact that some major effect shots were not in the preview, I am guessing part of the now very familiar end sequence with the frigate. This means it’s very probable that the differences being remembered might have been in this preview version.

Perhaps they did decide to test this cut on a limited public audience in Canada before the major release in the US.

Info Wanted: Question about 1980 uncut Empire
Time
It seems clear from quite a few memories from Canada :-), that it wasn't just that the 70mm release was different to the 35 mm release but that there was for a very limited time a different cut 70mm version showing in a few cinemas before the final 70mm cut was released.

This does correspond to a quote I heard just the other day when watching one of the making of star wars documentaries, I am sure it was actually on the voice over from building empire, I will have to watch it again to check and get an exact quote and who said it etc. But the quote was from one the main special effect guys I am sure this was while working on the empire release he said the he was really annoyed with George Lucas because they had the film finished and then a few weeks before the final release the got him in again to do more work on the film because they had decided to change a few things.

Will post a proper quote when I find it.

Info: Auto-correction from SE colours to GOUT colours (lots of information)
Time
Look forword to seeing the results from that.

I wasn't trying to be negitive about the SC, the elimination of the gosting through your preliminury merges is a great achievement!

I also look forward to seeing what the colours are like in the X0 transfer of the SC.

Have you considered releasing a straight X0 transfer of the SC as a preservation copy? maybe a straight X0 transfer of the DC as well?

Interesting results Zion.

But the SC introduces a LOT of noise into what was a very clean image from the DC, and the whites in the SC seem WAY off, which also spoils the clean look of the DC when they are merged.

Didn't someone make an X0 capture of the SC it would be interesting to see the quality of that capture.

Are the PAL GOUT DVDs upscaled from the NTSC masters?
Time
Moth3r, I would love to see you do another version, and STAY away from the GOUT when you do it.

There is far more detail in the captures that you made from the pal discs and much less noise, and from what i gather you think you could reduce that even more if you made another transfer!

Something very strange has happend to the resolution in the gout this especially show in vertical and diagonal lines, I can see more detail in every shot in you transfer compared to the gout, I thinks its just an illusion of the higher coulour contrast that give the impression that the gout has a crisper image. Perhapes if you colour corected one or your shots to match the gout you might show this more clearly?

While talking about loss of detail in diagonal lines, I have noticed on ntsc transfers some very jagged star destroyers in the opening flyover, - Zion the X0 fly over clip was beautiful! the cleanest availible, but i did notice the jagged line on the side of the star destroyer still, I wondered if you had thought about trying to improve this at all,( is the correct term anti aliasing? i'm not sure how to put it.)

Regards to all,
