Is the SW Universe an Idiocracy?
Time

I really do think that the innocent and naive "idiocracy" was a theme that George really tried to pull off in the PT without being too heavy-handed with it, but it just came off as really bad acting in the end. I think I remember GL at some point even commenting on it yet I can't recall where I saw it. I seem to remember him saying something about how the Jedi of the PT (along with everyone who looked up to them) were ignorant in the ways they taught about love, empathy, compassion, and attachment. It turns out that while some attachments are bad, especially the forbidden kind, that the right kind of attachments are in fact a good thing and that passion is fuel for a hero so long as it isn't out of control.

Luke, Leia, and Han are proof of the concept of how without the love they shared for each other they wouldn't have as much passion and drive to save the galaxy. This is why I believe that while Luke wasn't the chose one, he was in fact the greatest Jedi ever because he was the first one to say "Fuck you Ben, Yoda and all Jedi ever, I'm going to save my friends on Bespin because I love them!" And it turns out that while Yoda's foresights were correct about it being a trap and his FEAR about it came out in his speech to Luke before he leaves, in the end Luke's confrontation (and failure) with Vader actually turned him into a much greater Jedi in the end and could have never matched the experience he would have had if he'd listened to Yoda and stayed on Dagobah for more rock lifting and vine climbing. This is why I feel that a huge percentage of fans consider Empire the greatest movie of the three because we get to see how Luke's passionate failure at Bespin is actually the reason why he becomes the greatest of all Jedi. It's the most accurate depiction of real life struggle told in the most exotic way.

The PT, with it's idiocracy or bad acting, for me has always been a good representation of the dark side and honestly based on some people's attitude's about their quality I really do think that these movies have succesfully turned a large portion of Star Wars fans to the dark side of fandom aka pissed-off purist critics who don't realize what's really happened here. It's the most genius thing GL probably never planned on doing: give them something to hate to test how much they really love SW. It's like he's inadvertently testing us to see if we remember what he'd taught us in the OT "hate is the path to the dark side" and most people failed hard at that. It's the ultimate ruse! He turned us to the dark side instead of Anakin!

What do you LIKE about the EU?

I haven't read a star wars comic since the original marvel series.  Any suggestions on some to catch up on?

Check out the Tag and Binks series too, it aint supposed to be canon but it's cartoony tone and art style was funny enough to make me read them all in one sitting. It basically places two dimwits in the center of all the major action of the OT (and later the PT) whether disguised as stormtroopers or red guard and twists some of the plot in a fun way to make it look like these two were, sometimes accidently, the cause of some of the major events in the movies. The comedic parody-like tone reminded me a lot of the tone in the Lego Star Wars games which is what made those games so awesome.

Dark Empire is very well done too.

Was there really anything interesting in the film that one could spoil, if one had already seen the OT?

It was kind of interesting/surprising that it was the worst of the prequels.  I didn't really expect TPM would be as good as the prequels were going to get, even after seeing AOTC.

Dang, forgot the spoiler tag.  Hope I didn't ruin it for anyone.  Sorry.

Yeah I'm used to being in the minority with this one because I've always believed that TPM feels the most like an actual SW film and is in fact the better choice. It has the best lightsaber fight of the PT (it's streamlined compared to the Ani/Obi duel, and the death of Qui Gon actually felt heavy), and the 3rd act space battle/music sequence is superior too all other PT battles because lets face it, the Naboo starfighter is the coolest looking ship in all of the PT and John Williams was on fuckin fire that day.

TPM gets thrown out like the baby in the bath water because of Jar Jar which is a fair enough reason but if you ignore his presence the movie is closer to good than any of the other PT movies. 2-3 are just confusing both from a character standpoint and plot construction, while the main themes in TPM are pretty straightforward: Free the kid, win the race, kill the bad guy, free the planet. AOTC and ROTS are filled with tons of awesome eye candy that don't really amount to anything and the characters constantly do stupid things that don't make sense to who they are as people. Yep, with the better plot/music/hype TPM is my favorite PT movie. *ducks*

Have you met or seen someone from the Star Wars universe, and props?

Re: Kenny Baker and Anthony Daniels... there's a show called "Bring Back Star Wars" that came out 4 or 5 years ago.  Basically, this guy tries to put together a reunion of Star Wars actors.  It's true, apparently Baker and Daniels despise each other.  The whole show is on youtube, definitely worth a watch.

Carrie Fisher Interview with JCL:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59SVV_oambc&feature=endscreen&NR=1

At the 6:05 mark Carrie goes into telling a story about how Harrison Ford once tried to "scare" her by hanging himself by the neck with his tie in her wardrobe.... while naked. Did she just out Harrison as being into auto erotic asphyxiation? What the hell?

I had the chance to meet Prowse at Celebration 3, he had a very uninspiring little signing booth and was sitting alone with no one in line for an autograph! It was a slightly sad looking scene so I went over and talked to him for a bit. He was really nice although because the floor was so damn loud I could barely here a word he said. One thing I caught him saying was that he was unhappy with the location of the booth. I asked him if he was tired of hearing the Imperial March every time he's introduced anywhere and he said "No, it's all great!"

When I was 5 years old I lived in Japan and my dad took me to a word-touring Star Wars museum somewhere in downtown Tokyo in 1993-94 ish. They had everything at the event and it's one of my favorite memories growing up: OG land speeder, Star Destroyer models, Millennium Falcon, Executor, Death Star and most of the costumes.

I briefly met Kenny Baker in 2008 while working as a PA on a TV show for G4 at Comic Con. A group of us were standing around talking to him while he sat in a tall chair and the producer asked him if he'd be willing to do some segments with Anthony Daniels to which he replied in his deep and raspy cockney accent "Not a bloody chance" and "I never do interviews with that fuckin' pre madonna queen" True story. Think of the last time you saw Kenny Baker and Daniels do an interview together, or ever saw them onscreen anywhere together besides the films. Can't think of any can you? Apparently they despise each other! Baker's statement made me laugh so hard that I had to leave the area for a few minutes to regain my composure.

When/Why did you become an OT purist?

EDIT: "You're lucky you don't taste very good." I think that line was the seed of my lack of acceptance of the SE. It has always been one of my favorite lines, and I feel like the way Luke says it showed a lot of his affection for Artoo. Kind of like a parent scolding a little kid who just ran out into the street and almost got hit by a car, but unable to hide the love and relief in their voice. I noticed it was missing the first time I saw TESB SE in the theater, and remember mentioning it to my dad and cousin on the way out. Didn't feel right without it. One of the first changes I made to my despecialized VCD version of Empire was to splice it back in.

This is a good point.

Having grown up with the SEs, I had never heard that line until I started getting into preservations. When I heard it, I immediately loved it and wondered why they'd ever take it out of the film.

Because George missed that day in art school when they taught the old line by Salvador Dali: "An artist always knows when to stop."

When did I become an OT purist? When I watched the PT.

Quick google search (thanks pat man!) shows they killed him in Fate of the Jedi. Is that the EU to which you're referring?

The following has been done, too, but in the film maybe they can have Dark Luke. I love how Mark describes his ideas for ROTJ here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAYwQIERib4#t=11m40s

Interestingly enough JJ is at the table as well. It's a nice video.

I meant killing Luke off mirrors Obi Wan a bit too much. When Lucas originally did it, it was a last minute script change, (which Sir Alec reportedly wasn't too thrilled about) and then he had to create a new Jedi master to train Luke in the sequel.

When I read this I immediately thought of that famous line said by George to Harrison during the filming of ROTJ: "There's no future in dead Han toys" yet I remember owning a ghost Obi Wan action figure growing up. I love George but sometimes he says such stupid things although now I'm glad he made that decision though becaus we'll probably get to see Han get his "heroic sacrifice" scene we've all been waiting for (at least me anyways). In a lot of the interviews and docs Kasden said he was adamant about killing off Han in ROTJ and I bet now he's going to get his wish. It makes so much damn sense and I imagine that Harrison would be thrilled by the idea.
