4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

It’s a shame they won’t restore the originals. Even if they don’t want to revert back to those, at least they could put out a Classic Trilogy set that doesn’t interact with the revised versions in the official “canon”.

There’s no reason they couldn’t even finally do sets with every cut included.

Although, if Disney did try and do the originals, there’s probably a good chance there would be some mistakes I guess.

Enjoying the 4K77 and 83 anyway.

The Rise Of Skywalker — Official Review and Opinions Thread
Time

So JJ doesn’t explain anything. That’s infuriating. Same issue as TFA but amplified it sounds like.

His approach seems to be, it’s fantasy and important details dont matter.

How is the DS2 even intact at all, how did he survive. Lame.

I at least figured we’d maybe have a flashback bit showing Palp using the force to create a bubble around a section of the DS or something along those lines.

The sequel trilogy seems to end in the same place Jedi did. So what exactly was the point.

Solo: A Star Wars Story — Official Review and Opinions Thread — SPOILERS
Time

I thought it was pretty good and found Alden surprisingly competent as Solo.

It’s too bad the word of mouth built up so much negativity prior to it coming out, I think that really has hurt it.

A sequel could be really good now the cast have found their feet etc

The word of mouth has been picking up since the movie came out, maybe if that continues and the video sales are good, Disney will give it another shot.

Hi

I have been trying to work out how to encode these to an MKV format the PS4 will read. I tried doing an encode in Handbrake to the spec I found for the PS4.
Video: H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile Level 4.2
Audio: MP3, AAC LC, AC-3 (Dolby Digital)
It still didn’t work, I also tried it as a MV4, but no luck.

Hey Traveller,

I don’t own a PS4, but it’s my understanding that they can play MP4s from USB drives just fine. Does the handbreaked file play on your computer? And have you looked around in the How-To’s and Technical Discussions area?

You can also do a key word search of this site by doing a custom google search. Just put this in the search field and substitute the underscores for your search terms:

____________ site:http://originaltrilogy.com

Anybody else have any thoughts?

Actually, I got it worked out. Apparently PS4’s need video files inside a folder and not on the root of the drive, otherwise they won’t appear.

Gummi Bears (Released)
Time

Sorry for double post.

Actually, VLC deinterlacing was set to blend, I changed it to the discard deinterlace option and the issue between the NTSC and the PAL one wasn’t really there anymore. Blend seemed to throw the PAL source a bit for some reason. Encode is better for PAL, but slightly softer.

Here’s a couple of comparison pics.

Gummi Bears (Released)
Time

I guess sorta a preservation question here.

I am currently ripping and making MKV’s of Disney’s Gummi Bears cartoon. Seasons 1-3 were released in the US and the rest/majority of eps were released in Australia a long time ago.

I could rip all of the NTSC versions then move over to PAL for the 4-6, or just grab the first 16 episodes or so from the NTSC then move onto the PAL.

I compared the same episode, the PAL release seems to have better compression and less macro-blocking, but in VLC it is showing ghosting or something in faster animations. Although, this issue is seemingly not noticeable when playing the file back through my Blu Ray player, so I am guessing its doing a better job with that playback issue. Although I did see a bit of interlacing not being De-interlaced properly.

What should I do? Currently I am leaning to just doing all the NTSC then continuing with the PAL for the rest, but if the issue isn’t as apparent on the playback through the player…

The other advantage of going with the NTSC is also that it’d be at the correct speed.

Thanks for any advice.

EDIT: Actually, maybe I should aim to try and tidy up the source if I can get some help in what to do I might go down that route.

Or at the very least I could send files to people who want to try.

Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

What if the Empire splintered into separate factions all fighting for some form of control, the new baddie comes in and unites the clans into a huge force again.

Its still too early to really evaluate much, but I kinda agree with something feeling very slightly off.

I think Harrison's costume also doesn't seem right, almost looks like he walked onto set wearing that.

New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh - Preservation Project (* unfinished - lots of info *)
Time

Hi

Good work so far! I hope you are able to one day finish this. I have some bad quality encodes of the series, and like you would like a better quality release.

As others have mentioned, I wish Disney would just release some of these shows properly. Give us a full complete boxset of this and stuff like Gummi Bears. Individual volumes etc was just a bad idea, keep it simple with a semi affordable complete set.

Ok that's cool, that will make it nice and easy to create a disk once its out! For now, I will probably just watch it on my computer. Streaming the MKV through the PS3 Media Server is not that great for me, it doesn't play back properly.

TSMuxer also has problems with the GUI on Snow Leopard. If I wanted to play it locally on the PS3 I would have to convert it to a different format right?

I just downloaded 2.5 and had a quick look. Its great, really well done. So there is also a 3.0 coming out? Sounds good, although this is fantastic for the time being.
No 3.0 quite yet. People are waiting on 2.5 to be released in a Blu-ray format currently.

Oh ok. So will that be a file that can simply be burnt right away? I thought people were already putting these onto Blu Rays to playback?

The jump in quality is less significant for dvd to blu than it was vhs to dvd. I know plenty of people, young AND old, who claim they can't see the difference at all.

Don't forget that when we made the change from VHS to DVD, we didn't have flat screen TVs with dedicated upscalers. That's not to say you don't have a valid point, but it's a little unfair to draw the conclusion that Blus aren't inherently that much better than DVDs.

DE

After going back and forth on deciding weather to buy the set or not I finally did. I never bought the prequels on DVD and I wanted the special features. (I can somewhat enjoy the prequels)

I think the quality on these blu's are kinda horrible. I spot checked TPM, ESB and ROS. TPM was worse than I expected it to be, it mostly looks very soft, like someone had smeared something over the picture.

Empire while everything is slightly sharper than the DVD, still looks unimpressive, not only do the colours look like the DVD, you can definitely see frozen grain artifacts in scenes. Especially on Hoth, looks very bad.

Sith faired better overall, but I disagree with saying the transfer looks anywhere near as good as Avatar. All the composting with the actors looks much worse than I remember, they dont even look like they are really in the enviroments most of the time. Interior CG etc looks really bad and dated.

Overall the transfers should be far better than these. I will enjoy sifting through the special features though. Can you choose to watch the SD features without that border?
