How do you deal with using proper rips of files from a dvd/blu-ray in a video editor?
Time

If you’re ripping from disc, you can currently use MakeMKV. Specifically MakeMKV Beta.

It’s been in beta for ages, and the website has a registry code to “Validate” it. I’m not sure when that ends.

From there, what I do is take the MKV file I’ve ripped, and I run it through Handbrake to turn it into an MP4.

I hope this helps. These are the tools I’ve been using for a few years now, without issue.

Friday The 13th DVD aspect ratios help
Time

I’m doing an edit with all the Friday The 13th movies, and they are all 1.85:1 except for Part 3 and Freddy VS. Jason. For all the other films, how can I convert them from 1.85:1 to 1.35:1 like all the Star Wars movies, etc…

I made an account just to say this. I have the same issue and discovered this thread during a Google search for answers.

The year is now 2023. It’s been 16 years.

I just started a video essay that also requires use of the Friday the 13th film franchise’s many movies for clips. Not wanting to roll the dice with digital sources, I opted to go straight to my movie wall. I used the Blu-Ray discs from the The Complete Collection box set only to find that Freddy vs. Jason is the only film in a wildly different aspect ratio than the rest of the movies.

…until you reach 2009’s Friday the 13th reboot. Which also has a similar aspect ratio.

So, take comfort in knowing that the issue has persisted for over a decade and a half, and continues to haunt video editors to this very day.
