Honestly, you guys might want to hold off. Dre is doing a reel by reel color correction that looks excellent and preserves the original color differences from shot to shot from the print (1.4 uses Sanjuro’s shot by shot color correction, which does not) and removes the green tint, and Williarob will be using Dre’s new correction for an update that will also replace many of the patched-in Blu-Ray frames with new 4K print scans (some from an LPP print, some from a 1997 SE print).

No set timetable or anything but I don’t think it’ll be too crazy long since Dre’s been working through the reels fairly quickly and I believe Williarob has already begun prepping the replacement frames so he can just drop in Dre’s LUTs once they’re finished.

Seems to me like it’ll be well worth the wait and might make v1.4 effectively obsolete.

Good news. Hope he removes the digital noise seen in that Red R2 scene on Tatooine as well.

Tomas, compare 4K83 v1.3 with v1.0 in scenes like Han out of carbonite - see the unnaturally pepper-red face of Han Solo?
u could also compare that scene with the official blu-ray version. Neither 4K83 v1.0 nor blu-ray make Han look so red.

Yes, I noticed that. But my original though about it was that his face was catching the red light coming from the structure/frame holding the carbonite sarcofagos which is quite red lit in both the 1.1 and 1.3 versions. In comparison, it is more orange and bleak in the 1.0 version. I don’t object to it. The Blu-ray isn’t a good reference to use as they use a much more modern color timing to make the originals fit in with the prequels. And version 1.0 is a bit to washed out color wise in my opinion.

If all you want is a case on the shelf, then print one out and stuff an SD card or USB stick inside it.

That’s what I did…

4K77: 256 GB USB 3.0 containing 2160p no-DNR v.1.0 & 1.4, 2160p DNR v.1.0, and Silver Screen Edition v.1
4K80: 128 GB USB 3.0 containing Renegade Grindhouse and The Star Wars Holiday Special (Zion Hybride + 720p)
4K83: 256 GB USB 3.0 containing 2160p no-DNR versions 1.0 & 1.1 and minimal-NR 1.3

Hi, i’m verry sorry if it has been said before. But I’m french and new to this forum, so i’m kinda struggling.
Where can I find download links or torrents to projects 4K77, 4K80 and 4K83 ?

I was in the same situation a month ago. There is no 4K80 yet, however there exists a Renegade Grindhouse version of The Empire Strikes back in 1080p which is quite nice. I found a Torrent-link after making a Google search. 4K77 version 1.0 and 4K83 v.1.0 are also quite easy to find as Torrents if you try a Google search. The later 4K77 v.1.4 and 4K83 v.1.1 are hard to find as Torrent files (I didn’t find any) but 4K83 v.1.3 was found after some extensive search.

Also, do you recommend me the version with or without DNR ?

This is of course my subjective opinion, but I found the DNR version of 4K77 to be quite ugly compared to the no-DNR verion, at least on my 77" OLED. The latter look beatiful, especially version 1.0. The DNR has been applied to heavily on 4K77 which renders the picture more like digital video compared to the organic filmic look of the no-DNR version.

When it comes to 4K83 I really enjoyed the version 1.3 which only uses a slight DNR which retain some of the film grain and has a strikinly beautiful color palette. The non-DNR 1.0 and especially 1.1 versions looks nice too because of their more pronounced film grain, especially the latter which has a nicer color timing.

Plese do a search on your own but if you cannot find any links, send me a message and I will direct you to some of them.

Hello there!

I have recently grabbed the 4K83 2160p with no DNR version 1.0. Really enjoy the watch, its filmic and organic look as compared to the official Blu-ray. As most here, I find the original minimal color correction and faded prints perhaps a bit lackluster But just a bit. It’s still a superior presentation regardless.

However, reading this thread I have come to understood that there exists and even more superior 1.1 version of the same transfer in 2160p which has been color corrected but without any denoising. I have seacherd for it on the internet for the last days, various Torrent sites and NZB:s but cannot find any copy for download, other that the 1080p version.

Would appreciate immensly if someone could direct me to a site for download, either Torrent, Usenet, or better still, on MEGA. You cand send me a message if need be. Thanx in advance!

I really appreciate the cultural heritage preservation work that you have done to the world commonity Team Negative 1. You have set the new standard for this movie, with all the previous frames included. The Force will be with you, always!

Tomas

JEDIT: Got it! Thank you so much. You know who you are.

What started out with some parts from an old VCR moving the film and a digital still camera, is now a full size standard 35mm cinema projector with a 4K Black Magic camera (and special lens) pointed directly into the projector.

Sorry for bumping this old message, but being a Blackmagic Camera fan boy, I’m curious to know what BM camera you are using? Is it the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 4K? Or perhaps the recent Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K? Captured RAW or on ProRes?

I have a hard time deciding which of the 4K77 versions that I prefer. There is merit to both v.1.0 and 1.4. The latter of course looks more natural and probably closer to the negatives. But I really like the visceral and raw look of v.1.0, regardless of the yellow and green tints. I also enjoy the original grading because ot its reel to reel correction which probably makes it closer to the 1977 theatrical experience. So I gonna save both.

I have a question though regarding the source of one take at the moisture farm Jawa sequence. There is clearly visible digital noise (as opposed to analogue noise) between 18:46 to 18:53. It exhibits lots of microblocking around Luke when he moves his head and torso, it kinda moves and alignes around him in a very unnatural fashion. Is this part one of the few Blu-ray 1080p upscaled parts? There is a continuous scratch on the frame in this take which is also seen on other takes in the same scene, but these other takes don’t exhibit any noise. It makes me scratch my head…

I just checked and the frame rate is identical between v.1.0 and v.1.4, approx. 24 fps

My Panasonic Ultra HD Blu-ray player flags the metadata of 4K77 2160p v.1.0 as 23.976 fps. I cannot se any reason that the 1.4 is any different. But I will check it out soon.

Thanks - I know it shouldn’t be 60fps, just wondering why none of my Mac media players can tell me what the frame rate is. Interestingly, using Handbrake “same as source” to re-encode gave me a 23.97fps file, so mystery (probably?) solved, but it doesn’t explain why, for instance, when I try to create a new file with my own settings, it only offers me frame rates in the 30/60 frames world.

Anyway, 1.4 looks great!

Simple: It was encoded with a lower average bitrate. A lot of people struggled to play 1.0 smoothly, so we encoded the later version at a lower bitrate and heard fewer complaints.

Yeah, I noticed that. You have implemented a more dynamic bitrate compared to V.1.0 which was more close to 80 Mbps regardless of content, whereas V.1.4 jumps all over the place and actually has a higher bitrate compared to V.1.0 where it is needed (i.e. bright scenes) and much lower when there is much darkness in the image.

Thanx for the response.

Hello there!

I’m new to this forum and I have recently grabbed the 4K77 2160p with no DNR version 1.0. Watched it a couple of times now and it looks amazing. It’s like a time machine and brings med back to 1977 and my theatre in Gothenburg, Sweden where I wached it as a 12 year old. It’s simply adorable.

However, I have understood that there exists a suppsedly even better 1.4 version of the same transfer. And I have seacherd all over the internet for a weeks, various Torrent sites and NZB:s but cannot find any copy for download. Only the 1080p version. But I crave 2160p! And no friggin noise reduction!

Would appreciate immensly if someone could direct me to a site for download, either Torrent or Usenet. You cand send me a message if need be. Thanx in advance!

I really appreciate the cultural heritage preservation work that you have done to the world commonity Team Negaative 1. Love you all! Keep up the god work Rebels!

Edit: I got it now with the help of a kind soul.
