King Kong vs. Godzilla (Japanese Version) - English Subs from Criterion Collection (Released)
Time

MAJOR UPDATE:

Hey guys! Sorry about getting some stuff mixed up, but I recently learned from fellow users on this site that a 4K Restoration of the Japanese version of King Kong vs. Godzilla was actually completed and exists somewhere in the corners of the internet. I recently got a copy of it (thank you, you wonderful people!) and I just spent the last, say, 90 minutes, adjusting the Criterion Subs I extracted to match the timing on the 4K Restoration. As a bonus though, I’m still keeping the subs meant for the timing of the Criterion Blu-Ray file up if anybody wants those still, or, hell, if it may come in handy in the future. I also corrected a few errors I found on the Criterion Subs that slipped by me during my revisions.

Anyway, here is the NEW LINK for both SRT files for the 4K Fan Restoration AND Criterion Playback!

For 4K Fan Restoration Playback: http://www.mediafire.com/file/45cxowhpxmmuisu/KKvGCriterionSubsForRestoration.srt/file

For Criterion Playback: http://www.mediafire.com/file/0vfsh6eubxo1efd/KKvGCriterionSubsForCriterionBluRay.srt/file

Hope this helps people with future translations for other languages as always!

I’ve been spending a lot of my abundant free-time helping in archiving a lot of movies I own for artistic and archival purposes. Recently, however, I ran into a snag when it comes to the Japanese version of King Kong vs. Godzilla on the large Criterion Collection which was released a few months ago. So the plus-side is that here in the states we finally got an decent HD release of the original Japanese version (I thought we were going to get Half-Life 3 before this version of this classic would finally get officially released here…).

But there has always been an underlying problem for English audiences that come to the Japanese version of King Kong vs. Godzilla. For those of you on this thread you may already know this, but for those of you who don’t, many files us Americans here did get of the Japanese versions of King Kong vs. Godzilla had subtitles which were VERY inaccurate. The translations weren’t terrible, but they were very shoddy and incorrect in places.

But a break through came out when sometime in 2018 (at least I believe) it was discovered that the German version of the release of King Kong vs. Godzilla had subtitles which were very accurate if the Japanese version was translated properly to English. A group did translate the subtitles and upload them in some areas online, so that seemed to solve the issue.

However, it seems that when Criterion Collection release of the Japanese version of King Kong vs. Godzilla was going to solve all our problems, it appears that I ran into one when it was discovered I couldn’t extract any SRT files from the MKV because the company had made the decision to burn the English subtitles in. Not to say I’m angry, and I actually totally understand why. I just personally wanted to make sure I could get my copy of the subtitles in order to see if I could translate them for other audiences.

But with the long and tedious process of using automatic subtitle detecting programs, fine readers, and Subtitle Edit itself, I was able to get the subtitles from the Criterion Collection and get them into a file. As a bonus I also added in my own subtitles for the English-speaking scenes for people who are deaf or have hearing problems.

I’m sharing this file with the interwebs for two reasons:

  1. As said before, it includes subtitles for both Japanese-speaking and American-speaking scenes for people who are deaf or have hearing problems.

  2. If anybody out there is well-versed in translating English to another language, here is the data from the Criterion Collection in order to have a base to work from. For everybody in the world to see and love this classic!

SKREOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONK.
