LucasArts was dissolved on April 3, 2013. It hasn’t existed for 13 years. Have you been drinking?

NEW SCREENSHOT COMPARISON & NEW VIDEO CLIP - FROM Star Wars

ALI…

This shot looks great, but Han’s looks kind of weird.

hhhhh… Again, The Midtones and highlights are suppressed here so as not to blow out the Subtitles… this will most likely change when this is tonemapped…

I’ve seen faneditors do this but I’m wondering how you’ll do this on OT.com without breaking a rule.

This is not a direct link and thus does not break any rules. All information and instructions will be in a separate Google Doc, which is the only link on this site. This is no different than asking people to email me for the link; the only difference is that it’s automated.

UPDATE:

A new version is in progress because I was never truly happy with how the colors turned out, and I now have better references for the colors as I’ve acquired an extensive original stills package, which will help me get more accurate colors…

I’ll also be using the 2025 Steelbook master this time, as it has a slightly better encode. There will be two audio tracks: the 4K 7.1 downmixed to 5.1 and the 2013 3D 5.1 Remix.

This time, instead of taking PM requests, I’ll have an email system where you’ll email a copied sentence and automatically receive a reply with a link. All the information will be in a published Google Doc to separate it from this site.

Once complete, I’ll upload some screenshots and post the Google doc with instructions on how to download…

Until then here’s a little preview:

Seems like we’ll be getting these new exports for a bit. Apart from the new format obviously, they seem to be lacking the temporary audio and have fewer technical details. Could they possibly be less finished than what we’ve been seeing so far, given some seemingly low contrast on the last one? (or have they just changed the way they’ve gone about showing these).

The last one does not have low contrast… the highlights are a bit flat because they’re trying not to blow out the highlights of the subtitles…

The DOUT isn’t going to be in cinemas for a whole year. Nobody knows about home releases yet. I think waiting for that isn’t practical or desirable, especially as lots of work has already been done.

Why are we calling it DOUT again? There is no other version called “OUT”, why do we have to specify it’s Disney???

Honestly, after the “4K” LOTR trilogy hype with everyone parroting “it will be scanned from ogrinal negatives” which in the end it clearly wasn’t and PJ said as much, I am very much in DOUT it will be everything everyone is saying it will be.

This time we have literal visual evidence…

tbf, the new release is not actually unaltered, as they’re re-doing some of the foley

For an alternative audio track, the film with its original stereo mix will remain intact…

I checked the leaked clips and yeah maybe I was underreacting a bit. also the 360p thing was an exaggeration because the GOUT DVDs were slop as well.

The gouts were released by a different company 20 years ago… and even they where in 480p… no they’re not upscaled. you out of all people are in no place of expertise on image quality…

Id like to see a comparison of this clip and the 2011 blue-ray release to see how much better in quality these deleted scenes are going to be. IDK how the comparison guy gets the actual 4k screencaps, but right now on the 720p streamable it looks close to the 2011 version except for some color correction and a little bit sharper. Only downgrade is there’s way more distracting green noise than in the 2011 version. Hope they remove as much distracting noise from the deleted scenes as possible so we don’t have to do it ourselves 😅
I just hope the deleted scenes will be in good enough quality that adding it into the new ULTRA 8K releases will look seamless (or as seamless as it can look next to 8k).
Also, if someone can explain why the deleted scenes look so low quality compared to the actual movie scenes even though they were both shot with the same equipment Id love to know why.

The Leaks are, in fact, in 4K; it’s just that Streamable’s free plan limits the playback resolution to 720p…

What green noise are you talking about??? This leak appears to be from a higher quality source and is, in fact, softer than the Blu-ray yet still more detailed…

Do we know if the weird pitch lowering done to Yoda’s voice in the stereo and 70mm mix of ESB will be fixed in the new 7.1 mix? Specifically the scene in his hut when he’s saying “Patience, soon you will be with him” and “Why wish you become Jedi?” etc.

I know it would technically be a change but it isn’t like that in the mono mix so I feel like it may have been a mistake (or they realised that pitching his voice down to make him sound less annoying goes against the point of the scene). Plus it was also “fixed” in the SE

That’s the only thing that bothers me about the original stereo mix of Empire

Most likely.

Unfortunately it doesn’t look like they’re fixing the one thing I care about - the weird blurring/DNR thing that goes on around Vader’s cape in various scenes. I don’t know at what point that distortion got introduced into the film but it’s in every BluRay release so far, and also appears in shots of this new edition.

Kind of frustrating because it’s one of those minor flaws that you can’t unsee once you notice it.

What clip in particular? I’ll check my HQ archives to see if that’s a YouTube compression issue…
This version does not have DNR.

For the new ones it’s a shot of the emperor walking down the ramp. I originally noticed it on the Vader scene when he enters through the smoke on the BluRay versions (4:33 in A New Hope, watch the stormtrooper legs blur and distort as Vader’s cape flows in front of them).

I made a quick gif to show what I’m talking about since it’s more subtle in this scene than the Vader one: https://bestedit.net/imgs/ot/sw-emperor-cloak.gif

It appears the side of the ship is warping similar to the stormtrooper legs in the BluRay, unless I’m wrong and it’s just an optical illusion from the smoke - can’t completely confirm with such short clips.

That’s just compression. Here’s the Full quality clip:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1MfZMHywNVR4T00B6VQ0jfgA741yhO6UP/view?usp=sharing
(There is still some compression.)

I assure you no such DNR problems exist with this new version…

Seriously… what happened to all the color before???

Looking at the UHD now almost gives me an aneurysm… that should be illegal. Do we know who did the “CC” on the 2019 versions? Cause it couldn’t have been Lucas, right?

Does anyone else here know which interview I’m remembering where GL says “the original film/negative/interpositive” was cut up for 97ANH? And the the “original” no longer exists. I’m pretty sure he made it clear but he may have been referring to existing media of that time degrading.

He re-cut the negative, yes. But the trims were saved, not tossed in the trash.

So, he was being honest, on a technicality, that the original negative didn’t exist. But all of its components still existed, just in pieces.

Yes technically their own negative was changed. But in any real sense there’s not “one original reel” since they exist all over the world and have been restored by fans and the BFI etc. Again it’s all somewhere in the big “revisionist” thread pinned above here.

What does this even mean? There is only one negative for the films and that is the one that was “destroyed” or more accurately disassembled. There is in fact “one original reel” and it’s the original negative. Everything else is a copy and therefore is not original, at least not in a physical sense. I’m not even sure why we’re still arguing about this… who cares what George said about the negative, what matters is that we’re getting what we’ve always wanted finally, let’s bicker about the process, after we find out what it actually entailed once released…
