STAR WARS: EP VI -RETURN OF THE JEDI "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - ** PRODUCTION HAS NOW RESTARTED **

Adywan, I know you were planning on extending the spacebattle aboved Endor and creating a bunch of practical models to use for that, but I also know covid has thrown more than a few spanners in the works, so I was wondering if it has effected any of you plans. Correct me if I’m wrong but you never got a chance to do filming out at redwood park for the ground sequences so they will be delayed ofc, but I know keeping your pc running 24/7 to processes renders must be pricey so if you were looking for cheeper alternatives to crafting, filming and compositing pratical models you could take a look at these guys:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhalNJJPc3o

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCiu9hJpuBJMCEIotUFYYV0A

They seem to have mastered the look the endor fight and practical models perfectly but with 3D renders instead. I genuinly don’t know if thats helpful or not, if you know about them someone might have posted about one of them a while back but I couldn’t find it to check so I figured I’d post this just in case.

Obviouly it would be great to see practical effects in action if that still possible but again I jsut wanted to lyk there are other options if you need them.

Also wanted to check how you’re doing, not your project, you. And Mrs Adywan. Hope you’re both well and staying safe.

Did you watch the premiere of this season of The Mandalorian? If not, Fett’s armor fell into new hands. The guy who owned it then, Cobb Vanth, might have tweaked the helmet’s voice modulation settings. That would explain the difference in voices.

Ohhhhh, I get what you mean now, thanks for clarifying!!

I mean…I don’t see how that changes anything. How else do you think he lost the armor and got scarred to shit?

This is what I’m talking about, this could be a problem with continuity:

Let’s just say Cobb Vanth removed the voice-altering settings from the OOT/Revisited.

One what does that mean.^^

Two in general voice does not bother me, its the other lil fact thats going to be interesting as far as how its handled. That whole Jabba’s sail barge bit. With the Sarlac. And faulty Jetpacks…

With Blank’s appearance in Mandalorian and a rumored upcoming mini-series, any consideration for putting you-know-who’s voice over back in?

Oh that is a fair point, Ady you’ve said you had plans for that particular character in this edit but how will you be handling it given the new developments?

David Prowse was decades too old to play Anakin when they filmed the documentary. It’s not an option, even if it was available.

I agree but yeah, Shaw was also to old.

However, if this was to be done in any edit, I done think its a good idea to use the documentary footage either. The only way I think this would ever work, is with a Tarkin level cg Prowse and a deepfake, but that even more of a pipedream for this decade. 2030 though…?

So in TESB when you see the back of Vader’s head when the helmet is being lowered, who was that portraying him? Was that Prowse?

Ngl can’t tell if that’s rhetorical or not. In case it isn’t, Prowse played all of the scene with Vader except the choreographed fight sequences, and took on less roles in ROTJ partly due to an injury and partly due to Lucas filming scenes in secret and behind his back, mostly prominent of which is of course the face reveal, which Prowse had (like with the voice) been promised to play. But again in secret Lucas met Shaw at some party and said hey do you want to be in my movie Star Wars to which Shaw was like ‘sure, what is star wars’. Even after the movie he couldn’t remember being in it and his casting was entirely for the star power.

TLDR: Yeah, Prowse had that head prosthetic on in the ESB scene.

Also, Ady is keeping the Shaw ghost. It’d be weird to switch unmasked Vader but keep the Shaw ghost. Either do a “Prowse ghost” (which probably isn’t possible with extant footage) or keep it Shaw.

Haha! Idk, it would be kind of like a rogues gallery of Darth Vaders!

On this particular, and sad, day I’d also throw in my tuppence on the unmasking of Vader in ROTJ and Dave Prowse.

He may not have had the right voice (thankfully James Earl Jones did) but imho he certainly had the right look and could have and should have been the face of Vader at the finale of Jedi.

Even as a child the ‘kindly grandfather’ appearance and English thespian vocal delivery of Sebastian Shaw didn’t fit my expectation of what Vader should look or sound like. With the Prequel Trilogy casting an American actor ‘the English gent’ vocal delivery seems even more incongruous.

As we know from the documentary ‘I Am Your Father’ Dave Prowse filmed the unmasking sequence, I think if Adywan could get the blessing from the filmmakers to use it then it would be a massive coup for ROTJ Revisited, and perhaps… right a wrong for an actor that really deserved his moment without the mask.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbExdNBjOfQ

Oh, thats not really something I hoped to hear when I woke up this morning, but then again I’d never hope to hear Prowse’s passing.

I couldn’t agree more with most of what you’ve said however I don’t know how on earth you think Adywan is going to be able to get hold of that footage. Like they probably deleted it right after Disney’s lawyers started knocking at their door.

Hey, thanks!
I don’t think the idea suits the ideas behind Ady’s edit, but I’d love to see it come to life someday.

I got to admit that the pacing in the beginning of the film never worked for me. It starts off with Vader arriving in the DSII, then it cuts to Tatooine at Jabba’s palace rescuing Han where they get captured and fight at the Sarlaac pit for about 30 minutes, then the core of the story gets back on track on Dagobah with the Yoda and Obi-Wan scenes.

I also doubt that ady would implement something like this (he’s said in the past no deleted scenes) but it sounds cool for another edit. However i agree the pacing is a bit weird in the original. it doesn’t feel like the first half of the movie has anything todo with second so they chopped up the middle and sprinkled it all over the first act. the edit would also help with the whole luke not finishing his training but we do miss the whole “what i told you was true, from a certain point of view” which isn’t a good explination but its better than totally avoiding it. i would say that it would be better if it happened on endor tho. think about it, we open on dagubah, luke saying goo bye to yoda, then rather than luke just meeting obi wan there he would be stuck waiting, having not talked to him since esb, perhaps because obiwan is waiting till luke is ready. So luke would be struggling with anger the whole movie and make that moment he overcomes his anger way more powerful becasue he would have a more evident reason to be angry - obi wan was ignoring him for months/years - then when on endor when he is preparing to leave, he meets obiwan, who explains everything, tells him about leia and then we get the convo with her.
that way we have a more grounded opening before moving into tatooine and the ds scenes would feel less out of place because we could cut to vader after yoda says “you must face vader” (i think thats what he says). it would also work intercut with the tatooine sequence as it would explain where luke is and why they did the plan how they did, perhaps luke was going to be more active but he had to go see yoda again as he was dying. but they tried to go ahead with the plan without him, so he comes back late.
why not wait?? well they don’t know if han is still alive in there and he was coming closer to death everyday, hibernation sickness, (which temporarily blinds him) could have been worse with more time and could kill him. so they didn’t know what yoda wanted or if luke would be back for training for a long time (im guessing that luke did more training between the two movies, but had to leave to find a crystal for his saber).

but yeah that was way longer than i was planning, i think the pacing can never be perfect on rotj, but its not that good rn, so it could be changed for the better. (im not saying what ive said is better, but in my head it works, need to test it to be sure oc, one day … one day)

WOW, if anyone deserved a medal more than chewie its you, I’m dumbfounded y how much effort you put in.

On a side note I was wandering what plans you had for the ewok battle. I know that a lot of the silly stuff is going, and that there will be more rebel troops on the ground, but was far as the ewoks themselves did you have any plans on making their contribution to the battle more believable. I’m taking about a bunch of teddy bears with sticks and stones killing armored soldiers with laser guns.
If not, I think I have an idea that could work. So I was watching this video on all the explosions form Battlefront 2, and there was one that was super interesting to me. Basically the empire was attacking Naboo and they were winning but then the rebels used that hug orb thing that the Gungans gave Naboo in EP1, and it made a huge EM pulse that wiped out the Imperials weapons.
So you could do something similar on Endor, have the rebels fighting but being out matched and out gunned and then the Ewoks arrive, but are really useless and they are loosing (lots of dead teddies). Then Something happens that causes they EMP (TBH i don’t know what, maybe the shield generator causes it or something) and bam all the weapons go off. Then suddenly the Ewoks are really helpful.

IDK writing it down it seems like a bad idea, but it sounded good in my head 😕

Anyway great work Ady, you freaking space wizard.

Even in ESB it’s not really a love triangle, as the only reason she’s kissing Luke like that is to piss off Han. It’s not because she WANTS to kiss Luke (although yes, there’s that deleted scene where she DOES, and then they’re interrupted - but since that’s gone, and Return of the Jedi exists…)

I think it’s possible to go straight from Han saying “Hey, what’s going on?” to Leia saying “Hold me” and the scene works just as well. No argument, Han still looks bewildered by Leia’s reactions without there being a dumb fight in between that highlights a silly plotline that shouldn’t exist, AND you lose some of Carrie Fisher’s absolute worst acting, ever.

You could probably take the “Hey, what’s going on” dialog out of its shot, dub it over the approach Han makes (it’s virtually the same) of him saying “I’m sorry” and just let the scene end like it always did (“Hold me”) The edit would be mostly audio, not video.

I mean its not just one kissing scene, and she clearly is kissing luke because she likes him, or have you forgot this scene? https://youtu.be/2ZNlDnG-azE?t=92

I do get that the plot doesn’t require the “love triangle” (and I know its not really one but what else do you call it) but like I said, its not about what the audiance knows, its about Han’s point of view. As far as he is concerned Leia has been stringing him along. The far worse part of that whole sequence is the whole kidnapped princess thing, where the ewoks randomly pulls a forest dress out of their ***es. I mean that whole think feels more like the Princess Bride than Star Wars.

Anyway Leia and Luke, behave like more than just friends and I feel Han would definaitly be the kind of fly-boy to overreact in that situation.

I don’t think cutting Han’s Jealousy in ROTJ would solve your issue. The problematic scenes are in ESB (the kissing scenes between Luke and Leia). These are what create a “Love triangle” and although they get a bad rep these days, there is nothing wrong with love triangle if they are done right. What messes it up in ROTJ is when we find out that Luke and Leia are twins, at which point we stop being conflicted with whether we want Leia to end up with Luke or Han and instead just think of Lukeia as being the Grossest thing the in the galaxy (aside of from that ship name).

But obviously removing the whole “she is your sister” thing isn’t feasible and as ESBR is finished, the problem scenes from that, are locked in place. This leaves us with Han’s character, who already has a criminally small role in this film. From his perspective he likes Leia and knows she like him too, but he also knows Luke likes her and that they “have a connection”. And as we can’t cut the ESB scenes, he knows they kissed at least once. Beyond that he doesn’t know whats happened for the last however long he was frozen, only that they seem even closer than before and anyway the only really jealous bit we get (other than a few moments of excellently subtle acting, when ever he sees them showing mutual affection) is at the end, just before he finds out they are siblings.

Overall I would expect someone like Han to get a bit jealous. If he thought his best friend was getting with one of the few women he has ever had actual feeling for, dispite her having shown she likes both of them, he was ulitametly willing to step out of the way, showing how he has grown to care for both of them. Removing his jealousy arch would leave his character with litterally nothing in ROTJ and make the already farely forgotten scenes from ESB (forgotten as in the movie/characters seem to forget them as Luke doesn’t indictate he has a problem with kissing his sister at all, when he gets the news) seem even less consequential and more awkward.

So idk if its really a love triangle, I would say it was in ESB but that is set in stone as far as the Revisited series is concerned and we are only dealing with the fallout form that in ROTJ, which is needed given all the reasons above. There’s my two cents.

So, the Death Star Plans are not going to be the same as was shown in AOTC? The original plans look consistent to the concept Death Star. The AOTC’s Death Star Plans were more accurate to what we saw…

I wish that the plans could stay the same, but unfortunately Rogue One used the original version, so it has to be like that for continuity’s sake.

I just hope there aren’t too many changes to coincide with Rouge One… If that happens, to me this would just be 90% Rouge One, and 10& ANH. IMO…

I wouldn’t worry too much, the changes aren’t going to affect the story. Some of it is just undoing changes from the original ANH:R that were contradicted by Rogue One.

I feel like you could get away with an improved version of the plans, somewhere between the og ANH:R and RO. As RO only shows the plans for a second, as they are uploaded, the flickering zoom, and death star detail could be altered (In ANH not RO).
If Ady kept the white dot like style, then have the display pan in and have the details appear as it does, (like the og ANH:R) and also make it look less like the trench runs through the laser.

I also hope he keeps the Holo display, as RO proved that that table could do it, but maybe make it flicker/have the bands and a bit more blue tinted (also maybe do this in ROTJ:R).
