Yeah, I mean I grew up on the OT being on VHS, and PT was coming out while I was younger so its grown closer to me as I’ve got older. After seeing everything Adywan and other Editors have done on this site, its definatly inspired my to take a swing at them some day. I don’t have the experiance or knowledge yet, but I’m building up those skills now, so one day, I can make a PT edit to fall in line with Revisted. At least that what I aspire to do.

Yeah this illitrates perfectly how they changed the lighting on everything else, and how the saturation and contrast was boosted on everything in the SE version.

To be clear I think the SE changes make sence, especially the relighting to match previous and following scenes but it just doesn’t look natural, especially the ground.

This then carries over to your RHD shot which does fix the colour grading and brings out a lot of detail in the ogrinal shot. However, to me this shot doesn’t look good in its original state anyway, the colour do not look natural and the shadows are too weak. Its a product of rushed 3D rendering and of course when that was still fairly new.

I beleive what it is about the 2020 version is by dulling down the dark patches on the floor, they are not longer darker than the shadows and so it feel less off. My explination doesn’t really make sence reading it back, but I cannot find the words to describe what I am talking about.

Another thought I had was the engine glow on the speeder. It obviously shoundn’t be to bright/visable in daylight however the dull blue doesn’t really look right either. Idk maybe its just me but a lot of that shot has never looked right since it was added.

As always an exciting update, and of course, cannot wait to see it all finished.
I rewatched ANH recently and noticed one thing I haven’t seen mentioned here before (sorry if I missed it) but Leia actually celebrates the defeat of the TIE fighters as they escape. But this is at odds with her next line where she is rightly under the impression it is nothing to celebrate as they were let go.

Yeah I’ve seen this, and I get the appeal from a flow stand point. But I can’t help be feel like (intentional or not (but I belive it was intended)) the genius of the contrast between Vader’s arrival and The Empeor’s, gets lost. Like all the way through the last two films Vader is the “Big Bad” and while we see him kneel to Palp in ESB, his crew treat him as law. But then While the opening of Vader isn’t on its own strong, its meaning is CLEAR once Palp arrives.

Vader got a couple of officers and a few troops in a small hanger. The Emperor gets a parade of TIEs circling the DSII and HUGE hanger filled with Row after Row of troopers and officers. It sets up the power dynamic so well its would be such a shame to lose that. It will be intersting to see how the flow of the film feels once Adywan has implimneted his changes to the Jabba’s Palace squences.

For clarification Kurgan, they don’t. As for as I can tell this edit is being made with the asumtion that only the main three theatrical trilogies are canon. As far as changes made to honor this I believe there are only a few nods towards the prequals as they have more chononical inconsitancies. For everything else it either fits with the Revisted canon or it doesn’t but for the most part I don’t think these edits effect any canon unless that canon already doesn’t fit with the OG trilogy. The biggest change it will have is Anakins appearance and (if plans are still as written) the death of Boba Fett. Seeing as new canon has plenty of holes and pugs for the holes that casue more holes I wouldn’t worry about it.

There have been a few tangents on this thread where discussions have gotten a little off topic, but 18 post dedicated to a novel about events that have nothing to do with the fan edit, other than they a both Star Wars, has got to be a record. I not a huge fan of the prequals, but coming to accept them more since kenobi tie-ins and Hall9000 edits. I actually like this idea for the vader un-masking. and I never thought I would say that (also nice to see it released in HD or scaled). needs some sharpening on the eyes and maybe some fix on the skin under the eyes (compositing), but I like the effort here…still not sure hot it should end with the ghost and was going to go shaw in my extended version, which still might work since he doesn’t speak. I think shaws acting is good and that would still remain.

That actually looks a lot better than I expected. Still needs a lot of work obviously, but it works as a proof-of-concept. For the ghost part, I’ve been thinking for a while that it could be interesting to go all-in on the PT tie-ins by deep faking Yoda and Obi-Wan back to their ROTS versions as well. Maybe even throw in Qui-Gon to really cement the old gang being back together, since him having a force ghost form is apparently canon now.

Speaking of, Qui-Gon is actually highly under-represented in the OT so, you should go back to ESBR and switch out Obi-Wan’s force ghost with Qui-Gon’s. It took him nearly 30 years to mansifest a corporial form so, unless Kenobi went to the Death Star II school of speed running, he really shouldn’t be more than a disembodied voice yet.

Someone did a mockup of the “Luke and Leia” theme from the soundtrack album inserted into the Ewok celebration, and I remember it worked really well. Of course, you’d have to cut out the shots of the Ewoks playing instruments, but I think it’s a great track to end the trilogy on. Melancholy, yet somehow incredibly cathartic.

That was me! I’ve revised it now, replacing the instrument shots with both party establishing shots used in the SE (which were 1983 B-roll, so it’s still visually cohesive).

It’s a rough idea, but I like it as a less cartoon-y ending to the movie while not ripping off a temp track.

Oh that is nice, but it is a bit more tender and personal than the scene of joy thats playing out, could work form the point with the ghosts onward if yub nubs fades to a low under tune (i don’t do music so no idea what im talking about) but, that would only work if they they have the same tempo (i think thats the right word for what im thinking of)

Oh wow, what an amazing photo, I genuinly suprised they had the budget for two R2s. All the bhs docs ive scene, they were complaining about getting him to work for more than 5 seconds. Tho tbf I guess they could have just pulled one on string for that shot.

I can’t say that either of them are JW best works of art. I completely agree that the Victory Celebration squence should go, its very out of place in the trilogy and even watching it at the end of a 6 part saga, still feels out of place, because it doesn’t even make sense that the whole galaxy is celebrating (and if you are a sequal lover, it makes far less sence as the empire isn’t fully defeated yet).
As for Yub nub, its not great, and feels off for a final ending to the trilogy/saga and the mix with the outro ramp up at the end is a bit messy. But, it fits the scene its in, so short of having someone compose a new piece and recording a orchestra playing it…
Its the best we’ve got so unless adywan has some of his cunning and secret, dark magic, sourcery up his sleeves. Yeah he’s gonna do Yub Nub.

The “issue” was Adywan’s original fix for having two R2’s in the scene, which was coloring one of them red (see ANHR and last week’s preview video).

Ohh ok. I see it in the original comparison. So there were always “officially” two R2s in that shot? Never noticed before.

There’s one prop heading toward camera, then the actors turn a corner and another prop heads directly away from camera.

Was it two props or hidden stitch continuity error? I asumed that lady that crosses the screen was hiding a wipe.

Also, I’m not sure the red Artoo recolor is a good idea. I know why you’ve done it, but it looks so similar to Artoo (because, of course, it is) that it’s really distracting. Better to allow the viewer’s eye to focus where it ought (Luke & Obiwan) than to fix a minor issue.

I must atmist I found (not) R2 distracting in that shot, I replayed it a couple of time to understand what had been done. While it does fix that small blocking issue, I’ve gotta say it doesnt feel like its had the right affect. I know its a finished shot so I get its probably something you don’t want to go back to, but if you do, you could try chaning the (not) R2 to a different coloured unit. Like seen in earlier shots. There is one with a black Body and white panels I think, and another that is yellow. But as it stands the chome dome, and white body just screems R2-D2 even if the pannels are red. The only other thing I can think of is to keep (new) R2-D2 in frame a little longer so you have time to spot him.

Anyway beatiful stuff as usual and I had no freaking idea you had added that DS shot, its truely a seamless shot. Just makes me wonder what else you’ve suck in.

Ah, but it is a useful discussion to understand what HDR really is. And yes, Andywan himself from his source files would be the only way to really get any useful HDR so if he has no interest (and I really don’t see the benefits since Star Wars was shot on film and is better suited to SDR due to the nature of most of the shots) then it is an academic conversation (at least on my part).

I believe that to an project like this and utilize the original HDR metadata, that your editing suite would have to import it that data, you edit the project and then it would have to generate new metadata (which I believe is encoded into the video) for the output. Similarly, if you are using something capable of it, you can have a project that was originally intended for SDR but output an HDR. It depends on the software what you need to do to achieve that, but I’ve seen several tutorial videos that show just how easy it can be (or hard in some cases, but still doable). But converting to HDR is far more than just copying the metadata.

So it doesn’t give you what was shown in theaters but better it’s more that it’s altering the picture with some films. I didn’t know that the way it was described it was get the colors that were in the actual film to be show on disc for the first time. now I’m hearing the opposite wow now I’m even more confused about what the purpose of hdr is.

Don’t confuse the level of colors and color space with color correction or color grading. Those are totally separate. I could get into a long winded explanation, but HDR does not magically make something look like it did in theaters. HDR is intended to take advantage of the higher dynamic range of modern TV’s and projectors that can deliver deeper blacks than SDR screen or film projection ever could. If you want to see what was shown in theaters, get the 4K77, 4K80, or 4K83 versions. Those are the most true to the original run and they are SDR. The Lucasfilm color grades have issues (the 2019 version less so than the 2011 version).

Prior to HDR, blacks were always grays. You cannot get true black when you use film pigments or LCD pixels to block out the light (and even less so on an old CRT). It will always be gray. HDR is for the OLED and laser projectors where the black is a complete absence of light. OLED screens have actual lighted pixel LED’s so when they are set to 0,0,0 black, they generate zero light. The same with the laser projectors. For pixels set to 0,0,0 black, they project no light for that pixel. So HDR’s real power is in showing those darker details. That can make a night scene pop in a dark theater by adding levels of darkness never before experienced. It also has more color depth so the color gradients are smoother with less possibility of noticeable color halos. When you add in compression, HDR will not show the same compression artifacts so the image will be closer to the original uncompressed image. HDR does not magically make a movie closer to the original. You have to know where its strengths are and edit accordingly. From what I’ve seen of how Star War has been delivered in HDR, the SDR masters have been faithfully converted, but there is not much difference between the 4k HDR and the HD SDR versions. If anything, OTEEDEE’s D+ version looks better and it is SDR. HDR is just a tool to take advantage of new tech and where applicable make older movies look their best, though few can truly take advantage unless the negatives are scanned in HDR and any flaws edited out.

So your saying in the case of the original trilogy hdr even a proper new hdr or Dolby vision scan wouldn’t add anything to it and would be pointless brightness black levels Etc.

That all depends on the effort put into it and how much you can pull out of the negatives. From all the scans of those films, there isn’t likely to be any improvements. The current release appears to be using HDR to improve the colors and clarity, but doesn’t have more detail in the shadows.

But with adywan’s release your getting better than that making hdr pointless is what your saying when it comes to his version of the original Star Wars trilogy.

Could you please, move your riveting discussion about HDR to your DMs becuase, Adywan is not doing an HDR version and its completely irrelivent to this thread!

Lucas has always wanted actors to pronounce names and places how they think they should be, so as to give an impression of regional dialects/accents which would more than likely exist across a galaxy. Hence the whole H-AH-N/H-AR-N thing with Lando.

Respeecher is a sound editing tool that is able to recreate the voices of anyone regardless of the source audio recording’s quality. It was used to recreate the voice of a 40-years-younger Mark Hamill in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, and a 40-years-younger James Earl Jones in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series.

Anyone tried this on that “You’re mother” line people were going on about in the ROTJ:R thread a couple of years ago?
