Info & Help Wanted: Going to Lightspeed!!!
Time

Here is the effect. This is a .jpg sequence of an "exit" from lightspeed. But just play it in reverse to get a "jump". Maybe add some zoom/blur effect as you want to make it better, I don't know. I don't remember if the original effect was done by myself or someone else. All I know is that added some little blur and a blue tint. (Then, on my edit, I added a rotoscoped falcon cockpit scene above it. and it worked nice enough)

1280X720 pixels (including black bars)

I don't remember if the rules on this forum allow me to post a link to mega, but moderators would remove it if it's not the case. (then PM me if you want it)

One of the massive things that annoyed me about the PT was George's non-use of Lightspeed. Not one internal shot of a star field turning into white lines. WTF!!! Those shots were so iconic in the OT and should be reintroduced back into the PT.

To this end... Does anyone have a clean version of a star field jumping to lightspeed? Hope someone can help and spread the love. I'm going to attempt it now but it would be great to see what other people have done.

I have done a lightspeed clean effect for a scene of my The War of the Star II edit, only in SD though (and it was used as a background in the edit, not as "clean fullscreen" effect) I Don't know if I still have my after effects project to make a HD version of it, but I'll look for it.

-I hate that soccer ball droid. How's his R2 head staying on? Looks so silly.

Magnetic power of some kind.

Again, use your imagination people! This is not Star Trek, were everything have to be explained on screen with lousy concepts. This is Star Wars, were the lousy concepts are the ones the fans should bring during discussions with their friends! Anyone have the right to not like the look of that droid. But saying that you "hate" a 3 seconds video clips of that cute little droid because you don't understand how its head stands on its body... Come on. Maybe it will be your favorite character in the end! ;)

Boyega in the desert - it's strange that people would say that this shot isn't Star War-sy, as it's a similar reveal to the trooper standing into frame in the desert of Tatooine (look sir, droids!)

Oh, how did I miss that? It looked more like shot from Indiana Jones to me (like all those shots when the camera is very close to Indy's nose when he's searching something he can't find. And no... not like the prairie dog!). But yeah, it's obviously an hommage to the shot you described.

Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD**
Time

I like 48fps only along wirth 3D. And not every movie benefit of it.

I know it's not exactly the same quality than true 48fps but the motionflow effect on my HDTV (creating fake pictures to make the motion "more smooth") is really something that I a usualy despite. But when it comes to certain movies in 3D (The Hobbit, Avatar, Prometheus) I use it cause think it makes the 3D way better looking. But the same movies in their 2D versions looks just wrong with the motionflow. And there are certain 3D movies that don't benefit of the motionflow. Like Dredd for example. I tried to look at it this way and it just felt like a cheap direct to DVD. Certain other movies need to use it at minimum effect. I can't really point what makes it work or not for me though.

Anyone else blase' about the New trilogy?
Time

I'm not excited in the sens that I do not try to catch all the spoilers like when Episode 1 was made. But I have hopes that it will be good. And I'll probably see it hopening night (or just after) just because I prefer watching it with a bunch of fans rather than in a room full of people texting on their Iphone or talking about something else during the screening...

Was Samuel L a good addition to the Prequels?
Time

Yeah, Jackson was ok. Mace Windu, the character, not so much. It's a bit disappointing because on paper "SLJ + SW" sounded awesome and the result was not amazing, but it was not a real problem for the movies either. I just think they should have increased the "suspicious" side of Mace by making him the only Jedi who discovers by himself that Palpatine is a Sith, and not just when Anakin tells him.

Was Han Solo stupid?
Time

One can view Han Solo as "dumb" because he is selfish, loves money more than anything else and is quick to get into trouble easily when he could play it smarter (in some action scenes or even in some scenes with Leia). That's also what makes him cool somehow. But being cool does not mean being without flaws. I understand that an actor who plays someone like Han Solo would say that he does not view this character as a smart guy. The smart guy is Luke (see the scene when Luke is tempting Han with the reward). Solo gets smarter as the trilogy goes (both with his love interest and with his action plans. See the way he makes the Imperials out of the Bunker in ROTJ) but that's also what makes him look less cool.

Han "plays" the smart guy in Episode 4 to impress people around him. He is not really one. But he is reckless , lucky and knows how to shoot and fly.

Should Jacen, Jaina, and Mara be in the newer films?
Time

Best story to me would be if Leia is married to another man at the beginning of episode 7 but still have to ask Han Solo's help somehow. Maybe they even did not see each other for a long time. That way you can still keep a certain romantic/nostalgic tension between the two characters and write some entertaining dialogue.

Maybe Han Solo could even have to deal with Leia's kids (with that other man). You know: he does not like them at first, but they learn to know each others during the movie, etc... (I know it sounds a bit like Indy 4...even if in that movie Mutt really was Indy's son) Could be a bit tongue in cheek, but could work, if done well. And would be more interesting than if they were his own kids, with children/parents usual problems, blah blah.

Not only I'm pleased the EU will not be used in the new movies (they can keep some planets, even some secondary characters if they want to, I would not mind. After all they also bought the rights of the EU...) but I think it would have been a big middle to the fans to USE the EU. (like if they did not even bother to find something new to tell... ya know.)

And once again I find myself saying it in a thread: Lucas always said that if new movies would be done he kept the right to tell something completly different. I'm not a EU expert but I guess that is exactly what happened when the PT where made. There are surely some aspects of the the prequels in contradiction with the "post PT" EU. No? Why would Lucas should have been worried about the EU when he wrote the basic stories for the sequels when he obviously did not give a shit about it when he made the prequels (well, maybe he should have gave a shit about one or two things, but that another story..)

Plus: it would have been a real letdown, as an audience, to know more or less what to expect in the sequels.

Not taking care of the EU in order to make the new movies was the right thing to do. Of course this does not mean the new movies will be good or bad. Just that it was the most logical approach.

How Star Wars names are translated in non-english countries...

"The Millennium Condor?" WTF? Don't they have Falcons in France?

And why the hell would they change around R2 and C-3P0's names? They are just numbers and letters. What? France doesn't have the number three in their language?

Condor is used in french only in ANH, then they call it le Faucon (Falcon) in ESB and ROTJ. ANH have various little differencies like that comparing to the others. Like the OP menionned. It could seems very upsetting and weird, but really, as a child I never really did care much about changes like that. You only become upset by those things when you get a bit older and you wish everything to be in "order".

About 3PO into 6PO: it is because it sounds closer to 3PO in french. It just sounds and flows better in dialogues. And when then used 3PO for the prequels, it sounds worse in french to me. Even if it is the "good" name.

If Palpatine was hiding that he's a Sith, why was Vader running around calling himself "Darth"?

I don't think he's hiding anything after his election. Either people were smart enough to understand he was a Sith, or not. Does not matter to him once his have power, IMO. To me the Empire turns quickly into a reign of terror, even if there is still a kind of emperial senat until A New Hope. But in the movies he's never called Palpatine once he's elected. Just the Emperor. So his real name is not even important.

Side note: I'm not even sure imperial officers and Tarkin in the OT know what a Sith is. To quote Tarking: "The Jedi are extinct. Their fire has gone out of the universe. You, my friend, are all that's left of their religion." You maybe could see the Sith as something only the Jedi knew about, a long time ago. Of course in the clone wars TV series everyone talk about "Sith", so there is a contradiction here.

EDIT: Shit, i'm the EU thread. Haha, all right. My bad.

Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

I just tried to find what would Lucas or a Disney executive do to make the true Vader come back (not someone pretending to be Vader)... And the best I found is this: try to find a way for Anakin's Force Ghost to take control of a new Vader's armor but working for the light side of the Force this time... Perfect Disney family movie: Son and father (and add the son of Luke too, for good mesure!) fighting together for the good of the galaxy ( and in a way they could even say that it is exactly what Vader wanted in ESB...!)

.... Ok, I go.
