Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Redux Ideas thread

So basically Disney fan edited their own footage.

TRoS already felt like a mediocre fan edit of a better movie. I can already see the feedback threads in my head…

“Hey, it’s a good first step u/JJAbrams, but there’s a lot of unfinished stuff here. I know you cut the scene where Finn tells Rey he’s force-sensitive, but you forgot to get rid of the subplot about him trying to tell Rey something. You should cut that before going any further.”

“Getting rid of the first 20 minutes just doesn’t work either. The new opening with Kylo immediately on Mustafar is super jarring. Especially since you cut the stuff with Hux and Pryde on the surface, and Palpatine’s message to the galaxy.”

“That crawl is really clunky. In the main saga, an opening crawl really only has one word that’s capitalized, which is meant to be the most important part of the movie (like DEATH STAR) in ANH. But here you’ve capitalized like five different things, and some of them aren’t even proper nouns. Why is “REVENGE” capitalized? I know you wanted to get right to the action, but revealing Palpatine’s return in the opening crawl? I’m afraid that doesn’t work. Especially since you cut out the part where we see how he survived in the first place, and just used his line from RotS instead. I’m looking forward to a V2, I think most of these problems can be ironed out.”

“Cutting the subplot about Lando’s daughter just makes him look like a creep at the end.”

I thought that Stormtrooper said “Cool”

https://youtu.be/Vb_eeVIpDw8

As for the sequel trilogy being “decanonized”, lol. Despite the negative online reaction, those movies still made 4.5 billion dollars. That’s much more important to Disney than a bunch of YouTube videos and angry Redditors. Not to mention the guy who reported this is called…Doomcock. I mean come on. Needless to say, that rumor is complete bullshit, and this is coming from a guy who doesn’t like the sequel trilogy. On a more positive note, that WIP shot of Naboo looks great 😁

I know how dumb it sounds, but I thought of using that shot in the ending a few weeks ago, but I never posted about it, so I feel like an idiot haha. I’m glad it got mentioned, because it works really well! It totally fits the “family picture” tone all the final shots of the OT have. I’m glad you brought it up Ed Slushie, with Poppasketti’s shot of the Falcon flying off, it feels like the ending we should’ve gotten all along.

I don’t think Across the Stars needs to be used. It’s just Anakin and Padmé’s love theme, not a general one. However I think you could place it in the scene where Ben resurrects Rey and it would work well. Mostly because Anakin and Padmé’s relationship was torn apart by Anakin trying to save her. Now Ben literally brings someone back from the dead, so it might be a nice way to tie the prequels together as well. I don’t think that’s necessary though.

Yeah that’s too bad I guess.
Speaking of the destroyers rising, what about moving that up to when Palpatine says to Pride “the final Order begins”? I think not seeing them until the 3rd act builds up anticipation instead of revealing all the cards in the first few minutes of the opening.
They’re also just floating there for no apparent reason for 3 quarters of the film.

I’ve tinkered around with using that moment as the big show of force, since everyone is cutting Kijimi’s destruction. It works pretty well, since something does need to replace the big cannons thematically. Poe is completely hopeless in the next scene, and that doesn’t work if we haven’t seen the Final Order do something huge. If the fleet bursting out of the ground goes where Kijimi blowing up used to be, it’s relatively seamless.

I do think that Finn and Poe hooking up would’ve been the best, and most natural pairing out of anyone in this trilogy. Based on interviews (https://www.slashfilm.com/finn-and-poe-romance-in-star-wars/), it seems like some higher-ups shut down the idea of a romantic plot between Finn and Poe, and Oscar Isaac seems to think it’s because they were worried how a prominent same-sex relationship would be perceived. While that’s only one person’s account, it’s pretty believable, and no one else has spoken up to definitively shoot it down. Beyond that, everything is just conjecture. I have no idea if Zorri was included solely to confirm that Poe is straight, although I think it’s unlikely.

Still, it is pretty silly that Rey makes out with someone who murdered her mentor, tortured her, and killed tons of her friends, but two male characters (who have had a deep bond over this whole trilogy) hooking up is too risky. Star Wars has had some of the most unhealthy romantic pairings in film history. There’s incest, murder, torture, stalking, mass murder of children, fascism, I could go on. I think that’s why there’s a bit of a sting to Finn and Poe not pairing up, when so many truly horrific couples have been featured in SW before (I’m mainly talking about Anakin and Padmé here). It’s not just fan-service either, although the film has no shortage of that. Oscar Isaac and John Boyega have great chemistry and it felt like a natural progression of their relationship. With that being said, you can’t really make a satisfying Finn/Poe romance in a fan-edit. The time to implement that was while filming, in the editing stage there just isn’t enough material to make it work. There are plenty of things like that in this film, Finn/Poe is just one more.

Speaking about Finn and Jannah, I was wondering about playing a subtle version of Luke’s theme (the main theme) under the scene where she recounts how her squad refused to kill civilians. Then, in the opening crawl, Luke’s sacrifice would be directly referenced, and that it sent a “shockwave across the galaxy” or something like that. This would imply that Luke’s final act is not only force projecting to Crait, but also having people all across the galaxy feel the force (even if it’s just for a minute). I know that’s kind of ridiculous, but it adds even further weight to Luke saying “I will not be the last Jedi”, and actually makes his sacrifice relevant, which is my biggest problem with TROS. It’s silly, but this IS the radical redux thread, so I thought I should mention it.

Good call on keeping the Lando scene. I understand wanting to cut all of the exposition, but some of it is necessary. It’s also our only actual introduction to him, and without it, his role feels even more forced.

However, I think cutting out the whole exchange between Lando and Rey about “sending Leia his love” would work. It’s never picked up on again, and Lando never interacts with Leia on-screen. Also, when Rey tells him “you can give it to her yourself”, Lando looks like he’s thinking about what Rey just said, and then we move to the next scene. It felt like Lando was dodging his responsibilities, which is also never brought up again. Anyway, I think it would work if Rey said her line about “needing pilots”, and we saw Lando’s reaction of considering what she just said, and then the next scene. There’s some emphasis now on him scrounging up enough ships to take down the First Order, even if it’s just one line.

Has anyone had success removing the timecode burn-ins from “Finn meets a villager” or “Kylo searches the Falcon” scenes?

I found this a while ago: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_QH0BZEDXP1TkhXcUd0VkF5RFU/view?usp=drivesdk

ForceGhostRecon posted it, so I assume he removed the timecode, but it might’ve been someone else.

Here’s a few uses of the Force Theme that could work (I think):

(ROTJ) Leia Breaks the News/Funeral Pyre for a Jedi: About 1:20 to the end

(TPM) The Tide Turns: 0:57 to 1:28

(AOTC) Return to Tatooine: 3:11 to 3:35

(ROTS) Battle Over Coruscant: 2:00 to 2:27

(ROTS) Anakin Vs. Obi-Wan: 4:03 to 4:30-ish

(ROTS) Battle of the Heroes: 1:58 to 2:13

I think they’re all pretty solid and could work well, but my personal favorite is The Tide Turns. It’s from the scene where Anakin destroys the Trade Federation control ship, although it’s used again in ROTS when he and Obi-Wan land the Invisible Hand on Coruscant, so it might feel overplayed. But I think they’re all good candidates if you’re looking to replace Burning Homestead. It does feel like a callback to something we JUST saw after all.

I really like these new tweaks. I still think Anakin’s “I want more!” line is ridiculous though. I don’t feel like cutting it would lose much, but that’s not a dealbreaker. As for the youngling scene, and I don’t want this to sound harsh, but I’ve always hated that part, and I feel the same way here. One of my favorite aspects of this edit is how Anakin doesn’t become an absolute monster overnight. I think his crimes are better kept offscreen. If we only hear that he went to the temple, and Obi-Wan and Yoda notice that some Jedi were killed by a lightsaber, I think that’s all we need. If Anakin kills younglings, I immediately lose any and all sympathy for him. In the last version of this edit, it’s not ridiculous for Padmé and Obi-Wan to feel that there’s a chance Anakin can turn back to the light side. But killing entire classrooms full of children is so irredeemable, it kind of ruins all of the fantastic changes you’ve made to the final act. There’s absolutely no hope to bring someone back from that. Star Wars is full of impossible things like aliens, laser swords, and wizards, I don’t think “redeeming a mass murderer of children” should be added to that list. Especially since this edit has made characters feel more real, it’s just such a 180° from what we’ve seen at this point. That being said, I’m not really sure what could replace where you’ve put it here.

Anyway, I hope that didn’t seem too negative, because I really love this edit. It’s my go-to version of the film now. The rest of the changes you’ve listed all look and sound great, and having Anakin go to Padmé before the Temple March is fantastic.

Now that season 7 is out, do you think Padmé’s line to Anakin at the beginning about “there were rumors that you were killed” should be cut? We see them speak to each other while she’s visibly pregnant in the Bad Batch arc, and it’s established that their communication with each other is a regular thing. Rex even knows what to do without being asked, so it’s happened a lot. If they talk to each other that often, why would Padmé not know if he was dead or not? It’s a minor line, so it can be left in without taking anyone out of the movie, I was just wondering if you were planning to cut it.

I don’t think we should add Baby Yoda, aged up or not, since we have no idea what will happen to him in Season 2. He could look completely different. Maybe he grows an extra ear, I don’t know. As for everyone else added in the scene, some of it works. The Naboo pilots from the end of TPM for instance is a good idea. But in general, reusing scenes always takes me out of the edit. Of course that’s just me.
