The Last Jedi: Official Review and Opinions Thread ** SPOILERS **

Now, if in that story, at the end of it the Empire is destroyed, and then a couple of years later someone decides to tell you a sequel to that story and start by saying: “once upon a time there was an empire…” again, it’ll leave you wondering: “wait a sec, wasn’t the Empire destroyed?? How did this happen???” And if the person telling the story doesn’t give you an explanation I think it’d be reasonable to think it’s some sort of plot hole in the story.

Isn’t that a TFA issue? Several of the inconsistencies and “plot holes” listed here apply to TFA too.

Personally, I was hoping that the worldbuilding introduced in TLJ would allow us to “ignore” the worldbuilding of TFA, much like the more mature galaxy of Empire/Jedi superseded the somewhat quaint / Flash Gordon universe introduced in Star Wars 1977.

It’s like fine, do Starkiller Base in TFA. Do a reboot / homage to A New Hope for the first movie in the new trilogy. That might be needed to wash off the stink of the prequels. Do another Death Star. But be sure to destroy Starkiller at the end of the movie, via a Trench Run of course, so we don’t have to recon with the improbability of a sun-powered splitting-missle-beam Death Planet being built by this supposed fringe military.

And then in TLJ you can do a time jump, reunite the “Resistance” and the Republic, properly-size the First Order, introduce ships beyond X-Wings, do something that moves past the Original Trilogy stylistically. Unfortunately I think they kind of doubled down on the First Order being huge and Resistance/Republic being destroyed, but again without ever properly setting evidence for the scale of the forces or the conflict. And it all occurred within 18 hours of TFA.

I’ll note that The Last Jedi did succeed in doing this with Snoke. In TFA it was kind of “ugh, another Emperor”. I was very glad to see them just kill off Snoke and move past it. His gold robes helped a ton as well, even those would have improved him in TFA. The holograph thing was pretty lame / unneeded.

Would have preferred something even further that got rid of the First Order as well, such as Kylo/Rey seizing power together.
