But is there a version that basically does the exact same thing as that 1971 restoration but restores the 1978 version as opposed to the 1971 release?

From what I remember, and what was established here in a few posts, the 1971 release is the same as the 1978 re-release. Am I mistaken?

Idea & Info: Westworld / Futureworld / Beyond Westworld - preservations of?
Time

I have a copy of Westworld in 1080p. Not sure where I got it from; it may be the previously mentioned HDTV rip. It’s 13gb with DTS 5.1.

I also have the Beyond Westworld, seemingly the same quality as detailed by SKot.

Finally, my copy of Futureworld is 720p, not sure the source. Would be glad to help preserving these any way I can.

Is anyone here bidding on this:

Somebody is, contact Poita if you would rather be involved.

No it’s cool, I just wanted to bring it to the community’s attention; I also didn’t want to bid on it, thus pushing the price up for someone here.

Quick question. What thread should we post in for THX-1138, generally speaking? This one or the original, longer one? I realize that we got different preservations going on at the same time, and it makes sense to post in each one respectively, but I was thinking maybe they should be consolidated at this point? This one with: http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/THX-1138-preservations/id/11741

I feel like this thread was created for donations, and now that it’s been successful, we can go back to posting in the other one?

Thoughts?

poita,

I just wanted to squeeze in a “thank you” for all the hard work you are doing for this project. I know it eats up a lot of your personal, free time and that isn’t something any of us are taking for granted. The community at large thanks you, and we appreciate the effort of keeping us up-to-date. I’ve already donated, but I am trying to save up a bit more funds to send your way as a way of showing my gratitude. Cheers!

Yes… and no. They need to be internal 4TB sata hard drives of reliable brands (we went with the Caviar Blue ones). To keep the costs down they would also need to be sent from Europe and not needing returned. All things considered, buying them directly from Amazon with the donated money ends up being the cheaper option.

Okay, just checking. I figured there might be some users in Europe who might have some to donate and/or have a connection to getting cheap HDDs.

The food in the script/shooting script is referred to as "foam rubber food" or "multi-colored foam rubber." There are other references but that's how it's described, without really telling what the food is. I think the audience is expected to assume it's some sort of dehydrated supplement or something—you know, future food, where edible rubber is the highlight. I imagine this is some kind of commentary on food quality in the 60s and 70s, where food was really becoming processed and manufactured.

Here is a interesting scene that describes its qualities:

               16. MAIN ROOM, THX'S QUARTERS

THX is laughing hysterically. As soon as he starts to
gain control of himself, he breaks out laughing again.

LUH has taken a spherical piece of food from her tray and
is bouncing it on the table. She is laughing, herself,
but still trying to keep control of the ball.

                                     THX
                              (laughing very hard)
                         Violation...violation...You're
                         bouncing in...violation..

This makes them laugh even harder and LUH loses the ball.
They both dive for it and wind up face to face under the
               table.

               Eventually, they stop laughing.

                                     THX
I've never been under the table
                         before.

                                     LUH
                              (pointing at the
                              underside of the
                              table)
                         Look,dirt!

                                     THX
                              (mocking)
                         That's not dirt...Can't be dirt..
                         Dirt is a violation.

                                     LUH
                         Looks like dirt.

THX picks up the red food ball and holds it up at LUH.

                                     THX
                         Look, food!

                                     LUH
That's not food. Can't be food.

                                     THX
                         Looks like food.

THX takes a bite out of it and grimaces.

                                     THX
                         Tastes like food.

He scrambles out from underneath the table and tosses it
in the product consumer. It disappears instantly.

                                     THX
                         Produced to be consumed!

LUH goes over to the table and scoops up the rest of the
               food.

She begins tossing it into the product consumer.

                                     THX
Hey! Wait a minute. Not all of
                         it. I'm hungry.

She begins to break out laughing, throwing the food into
the consumer as fast as she can. THX starts for her and
she begins throwing the food at him.

THX catches her by the foot and pulls her to the floor.
They roll around playfully, laughing hysterically all the
               time.

Slowly and subtly, their play becomes more violent and
sadistic, although they keep on laughing.

                                     LUH
                              (laughing)
                         The pain, no...the pain, I can't
                         stand it.

LUH turns on THX, pinning him to the floor. She sits
               astride him, holding his arms.

They are both out of breath and panting heavily, confused
by a slowly increasing awareness of each others sexuality.

LUH slowly releases THX's arms and sits up. She gives a
last, embarrassed giggle and then falls silent. They stare
               at each other.

What is interesting is the removal of this scene, particularly because it builds tension and explains their sudden romance with each other. While it is a good segway, removing it doesn't hurt the scene or the transition from roommates to lovers. And the humor itself feels ackward and out of place with the rest of the theme; however, I do like it and would have like to seen it as an outtake/deleted scene.

THX 1138 "preservations" + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released)
Time

Okay so I was looking through some old txt files, from 2004, and in one of them I found this note that I made to myself:

"1138 ENCORE torrent"

I am not sure if I made the note in 2003 or 2004, because it was in my 2004 folder, but it does confirm a few things I remember.

I just did a Google search and found this link:

http://boards.theforce.net/threads/thx-1138.7175997/

People in there stated multiple times that they caught THX on Encore. While their posts date 2002, and Encore did not start airing HD until March 22, 2003, I firmly believe that it was this channel that had THX in HD.

With that said, I can't imagine if it was aired in HD, and someone actually capped it, that it exists now. But I am going to email Encore to find out if they ever aired it in HD.

Maybe it's a stipulation when airing it—you can only show the newest version, kind of like Star Wars.

In this case, is there even an HD version of the original available that they could run if they were allowed to?

Back in ~2002-3, either TMC or some other movie-centric channel(pretty certain it was TMC) aired the original version of THX1138 in HD(up-converted if TMC). I somehow missed this, and only learned of it later through a torrent/newsgroup; someone managed to cap it apparently. Of course the movie wasn't popular enough to have people still sharing it by the time I found out, so I never got a chance to even download a part of it. I bet with a little digging I can find a reference of it existing at some point.

With that said, it's possible that it was never actually aired in HD, and the "thing" that was floating around was a preemptive fake/hoax before the re-release in select theaters. I could be wrong about that because I am fairly certain that I confirmed the movie was aired at least once in HD as I went to the channel's website to confirm its airing/schedule; I specifically remember seeing an HD version listed.

Maybe someone else can confirm/corroborate this.

It's hard to imagine why the studio would have replaced one anachronistic movie clip with another, unless rights issues were involved at the time.

If Warner execs didn't appreciate Lucas' (utterly beautiful) irony, they would have simply cut the sequence altogether.

Good points. However, Things to Come was public domain when THX 1138 was in production, so I don't think it was copyright issues; it could have simply been a creative decision to go with something more inline with the THX's theme, whereas Things to Come weighs heavily on war.

Buck Rogers does a better job contrasting our outlook of the future as an adventurous journey with THX's bleak dystopian world, e.g. "... in the wonderful world of the future. A world that sees a lot of our scientific and mechanical dreams come true." It is an ominous introduction, and works extremely well in my opinion. Additionally, we know Lucas was a big fan of the serials from the 30s and 40s.

Just for fun, here is an episode guide to the first Buck Roger's serial/chapter "Tomorrow's World," as well as "Tragedy on Saturn" seen at the end of the clip in the intro:

http://buckrogersguide.blogspot.com/2014/03/ep-101-tomorrows-world-april-11-1939.html

http://buckrogersguide.blogspot.com/2014/03/chapter-two-tragedy-on-saturn-april-18.html

An interesting note from the first chapter: Killer Kane is the result of the 20th Century's failure to eliminate crime. Racketeer, now controls the government.

And

Killer Kane interrogates the Pilot for the information to the location of the Hidden City. As a tactic to get the Pilot to talk, Kane shows the Pilot a room full of Pilots that have been captured and turned into slaves with the use of a helmet that turns the men into mindless robots.
