I think there’s only so much you can do. You probably can make them more tolerable on their own, yes, but they will still only exist to undermine the rest of the saga. That’s intrinsic to their plot and thus not something you can change. I don’t personally believe that it’s worth it (especially having seen 9), but if you want to attempt it then go right ahead.
