Toy Story (1995) 1.5K restoration in 3D (a WIP; v1.0.3 currently available)

Not at the local cinemas I frequented. Dolby Digital might have been used (immediately before the BBFC certificate) in larger theatres, e.g. in London. THX is very uncommon in the UK, due to the lack of certified screens - can’t think of a single time I’ve seen that in the cinema, in fact (and I’ve been to most of the larger London cinemas).

On my DTS LaserDisc to Blu-ray copy of this film (which your restoration will be the main source), I am going to use a 35mm scan of the Tex Robot trailer (just to pay homage to the deluxe CAV LaserDisc boxset) as the disc’s THX trailer. What do you think?

OK, in honor of the release of Toy Story 4, I’m working on a logo restoration of the original movie, in 3D and its original 1.5K resolution. Preliminary planned languages are English, French Canadian, Mexican Spanish, Castilian Spanish, German, and Italian.

Sources I plan to use include:

  • Toy Story 3D Blu-ray (for the bulk of the restoration)
  • Toy Story UK R2 DVD (for the logo restoration and the Dolby Stereo Digital English track)
  • Histoire de jouets Canadian pan-and-scan VHS (for reference when framing to the theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1, as it appears to be sourced from a 35mm release print which was apparently pre-cropped to the aspect ratio from the original 1.66:1)
  • Recreated rating slides, including MPAA G card

I may have to recreate some stuff from and/or use lower-quality sources for the finished product, so bear with me. I’ve already created a preliminary version of the zooming-out Disney logo at the start, and it looks a little rough with the stereo separation I applied for the zoomout/transition to the opening scene. PM me for a WeTransfer link to the stereo 3D opening logo recreation, which should be ready as early as the next day for those who request it.

That’s gonna be so good! I’m doing a DTS LaserDisc to 1080p MKV project, and Toy Story is among the titles, so Threepio, is it okay if your transfer is the source for the main feature on the Blu-ray copy of the classic animation for the project I’m doing? Also, may I have a WeTransfer link to the stereo 3D opening logo recreation (but I don’t know how to PM you!)?

SpongeBob SquarePants - 1997 Pilot Debut Reconstruction (* unfinished project *)

To anyone who wanted to see this in HD:

I put some footage together & cut a version of the Spongebob pilot from the official master (no CC) & matched it to the VHS here (pass sboyahoy):

It’s not final, or pretty by any means, but (once I correct a few things) it will probably be the best this can look and sound while being accurate to the sources given.

Do any of you have the password to this video link?

Kind regards,
Stephen

Idea: DTS LaserDisc to 1080p MKV (or Blu-ray) conversion
Time

So far, I have only ONE DTS LaserDisc, which is the 1997 David Fincher film The Game, which stars Michael Douglas and Sean Penn (which is the only PolyGram film released on LaserDisc with DTS 5.1 sound). I am looking for a little help from some contributors who might want to help me make this project a reality.

Enough of the discussion of what I have, and anyways, here’s how the project will work:
The sources are 1080p visuals that match the original version as seen on the LaserDisc, as is the case of logo unplastering for certain titles like The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Toy Story and GoldenEye (don’t forget Tomorrow Never Dies!).
The audio? Well, it’s the English 5.1 DTS digital audio from the LaserDisc reworked into a new DTS 5.1 audio track, along with additional audio depending on a certain title, usually a 2.0 Stereo track if you don’t have a DTS setup in your home theater… or maybe some commentaries if the discs contain them.
The subtitles are in English, even the commentary subtitles, depending on the title!
The keep cases to store the Blu-ray discs are normal blue or colored (I have to use the American spelling for American readers!)… but what about the rest?
The bonus features are actually depending on what title included them, but if not, the theatrical trailers for the films can be in HD.
Blu-ray menu design can depend on the title, also with the THX certification of the title if the disc did so, for example Jurassic Park.

Enough of the talk of what will happen with the project, let’s talk titles. Action hits like Blown Away, Jurassic Park (the first film to ever use DTS audio!), its’ sequel The Lost World, Armageddon join comedies like Boogie Nights and thrillers like The Game on the list of titles.
