Help me settle an argument: does Luke use the ‘force choke’?
Time
I'm surprised it's even a question. Obviously, Obi Wan's malfunctioning lightsaber was resonating with the disturbance of the force caused by the destruction of Alderaan, which clashed with Han's emotional distrurbance at cold heartedly murdering a green bounty hunter who obviously meant him no harm. This anomally was amplified by the Carbon freezing. Luke just happened to raise his hand to say "hi" and wipe some yuck off the nice guard's face during a spike in the anomaly which caused the guard to stumble backwards.

At least that's the story on StarWars.com

Why the fans complain...
Time
I've come to terms with the fact that the OT changes aren't really what bothers me. I *prefer* the original way, with the exception of Jedi Rocks and the loss of Yub yub, which I actually dislike. What's ruined it for me is the change that the context of the PT has worked on the OT. That's what really drained the magic for me. That's why I complain.

The OT changes just get me disappointed. The PT changes everything.

OT.com is so loved....
Time
Hey, we got our share of everything. If you come in here looking for a certain mindset, you'll find PLENTY of closeminded stubborn Lucas haters, but you'll also find people who like the old stuff and the new stuff, people who have just lost faith in him but stop at disappointment, and so forth. Sometimes I'm reading through these boards and I just have to close the window because the posts get ridiculous.

But we have a lot of other stuff as well. In general, this board is the best thing that happened to my love of Star Wars in a long time. I wouldn't say to MF.com that "we're not like that" but I would say "yes, but there's a whole world of other stuff and other viewpoints on here."

Yoda's line of "Too old! Yes, too old to begin the training"...
Time

In the OT Yoda says “Too old! Yes, too old to begin the training.” I always thought this was brilliant scriptwriting. Yoda is obviously nervous about training Luke and trying to avoid it. He grasps at a series of less and less substantive excuses which Obi Wan deconstructs. His last effort is this silly excuse that has nothing to do with anything. I loved it, it was great characterization for Yoda and a wonderful scene.

But then the PT establishes that there was an official age by which to begin training and people were screened out all the time. Now in ESB Yoda is saving one of his best excuses for last. The new context ruined the scene for me. MAYBE I just misunderstood how it was meant, but if so, Yoda’s delivery is inconsistent with what he is talking about. This change (which wasn’t necessary at ALL. And would have saved us the little kids finding the lost planet in II) completely drained the life out of that scene.

Sorry, I just wanted to gripe and didn’t know where else to file it. It’s nice to have listeners.

Star Wars DVD Covers
Time
Hey ChainsawAsh! I've got 10 MB of webspace, so I can distribute your pictures a few at a time. If ppl want to donate a buck to the cause, I can host them all at once (5 bucks gets me up to 60 MB. If this is a needed service, I can contribute to the cause, but not worth it for just one or two sets of covers). This goes for you, too, Mackey! Let's get those covers out there. 10 MB should host 2 or three covers at a time.

You can mail them to me at murphy_daniel [at] bah [dot] com or ICQ at 1559 1720.

The Digital Bits Review (2004 OT SE DVD release)
Time
I didn't understand why, when I heard the news of Star Wars on DVD, I wasn't that excited. I thought "maybe I've just used up Star Wars; I know it too well and it's no longer interesting." Talking to y'all on this website, I realized that wasn't it. The changes to the OT are part of it, but it's really the PT changing the entire context and universe of Star Wars.

I'm not so pumped about this set. I'm so pumped about divorcing myself from the PT and changes and looking at the OT in a new light (or old light) and rekindling that magic. This set can suck my yak. (no, that's not a euphemism, it's just a creative, non-offensive insult).

As I said in another thread, if GL would put out the old and the new universes of Star Wars, I would love to have them side by side for reference, and just dedicate myself to the old stuff. But since he's trying to bury the old concept, I'm getting buried with it.

How romantic. Like Aida.

Read the article, it's a good, fair distribution. Those who like the new stuff, the old stuff, and the ambivalent. I just got to say from those screenshots

DANG.

That looks good. Looks so good makes me want to fantasize for a moment:

In 2007, George releases a 10 disc box set. It has a finalized version of all six movies edited for continuity and George's final vision. It also has the three movies as they were originally made, but touched up for picture, sound, and effects shots (explosions, space battles, and stuff, but not actually changing the sets or scenes). Then a 10th disc celebrating Star Wars. If I could have that set, I'd mess myself. The new versions would be a reference for me, and I'd still have the movies that mean so much for me.

OK, fantasy over. Back to my VHS. But DANG it looks so crisp and fresh.

Hey, you all heard of www.ign.com? It's an online community that does reviews of movies and video games and all that stuff. They're doing a review of the new Star Wars DVD now.

If you go here, there's a link at the bottom to contact the editors. I know IGN is FULL of kindred spirits who probably have no idea what's going on here and would jump on the petition in a second if they had the chance. I just contacted the editors just to say please check it out, you don't have to endorse it, but I know it would be of interest to the IGN community so think about doing an article.

If it works, it would be huge. I don't want to swamp them, but if a couple more people send them notes it might help.

The infamous chest grope
Time
I tried to grab one last night, but my computer won't read my DVD's and I don't have a VCR hooked up to it anymore, so I couldn't. Shucks.

I did watch it on the DVD's (TR47) and is it possible that there was some editing from the 95 VHS version? I remember the scene being different. When I have time, I'll watch the VHS version. I just remember the whole thing being more deliberate. Last night it almost looked excusable.

Star Wars DVD Covers
Time
Sometime last week on this website I saw Magnoliafan covers that featured line drawing cover art, like pencil sketch style. I didn't save them then. Now I can't find them.

Has anyone else seen them? Did they disappear, or are they just buried somewhere. I've run out of ideas to track them down.

Thanks to the two of you below! I PMed him.

If the Indy release is anything to go by, in the months following the release there was a swarm of Temple of Dooms and Bonus discs on ebay. I don't mind getting it used since the money doesn't go to Lucas.

And a bonus disc plus the 7 disc TR47 makes a nice round 8 for me

Lucas: Madman or Genius?
Time
I just want to interrupt for a moment to shout out to Jimbo.

I'm glad you're on this board, dude. You provide the dissent and lone voice to keep us honest. I respect 1704 posts in a community with a different mindset. Keep us thinking, man.

That said, I held out hope after TPM that Lucas was a genius and I just didn't know what was happening yet. I didn't believe it, but I held out hope.

After Clones, I lost hope. Funny how as soon as I get to "a new hope" that hope comes back. Maybe my own emotional reaction to the quality of Star Wars is supposed to mirror the emotional state of the people in the galaxy... Maybe GL is indulging in a little "outside the box" art expression...

And while I'm dreaming, I'd like a pony.
