THX-1138 on DVD, please...
Time
Well, it seems a torrent of the original THX-1138 is now up at suprnova.org, but I can't get it to download. It won't work. When, I clicked on it, it said "Unauthorized Download" and had a whole bunch of other stuff written on the page, and when I right clicked and saved it to my harddrive and then opened it to download, it didn't download, it just says "got bad file info".

How can I get it to download properly?

This is my biggest fear - unless it's suddenly announced ROTS has a running time equal to Return of the King! Not only do we have to see Anakin turn to the dark side (in a believable way, I might add), but we also have to see some history of Obi-Wan trying to turn him back before their climatic battle. (As referenced by Vader in ROTJ when he says to Luke, "Obi-Wan once thought as you do.")

Not to mention Lucas has to fill in all those plot holes and inconsistencies, which would probably take a movie just for that (and we have to see the Jedi being exterminated, the Empire rising, and so on and so on).

As someone else put it, it'll be like watching a magician do as many tricks as he can in two hours.

So has anybody bought it yet? What did you think of the changes?

As I said before, I'm holding off buying this until I can watch the original version first. Unfortunately, I don't think I have any real way of viewing it right now.

Any word on that torrent from a while back? I'm not getting impatient or anything, I'm just wondering what happened to it.

Again, why get so bent out of shape over FIVE SECONDS of footage? Why does it matter?

I don't know about anyone else, but personally, for me it's not quantity, but quality that matters when it comes to these changes. It doesn't matter to me whether a change is five seconds or five minutes, just how bad it is. If a change is very bad, awful, ridiculous and completely unnecessary, even if it's just half a second it can still ruin the entire scene, especially if it takes place at a crucial point in the scene. A very good example of this is Greedo shooting first. It's just half a second, but still ruins the entire scene for me because of how bad it is.

I can't speak for anyone else in this matter, but I'm pretty sure others feel the same way as I do.

You're right that it's not false advertising, but it still is at least somewhat misleading/confusing. First of all, they use the word "original" without mentioning which version this is or any changes, so even though it doesn't say "original versions", it can still cause confusion. Also, like I just said, they don't mention any changes - in fact, the Lucasfilm people haven't given us any direct answer about the changes. And the boxset doesn't say which version this is. When a movie has more than one version, the box needs to say what version it is, otherwise people have no idea what they're getting.

It's not actual false advertising, but nonetheless it is somewhat misleading. And I guarantee just calling it the Original Trilogy with no mention of the version, of any changes, etc. will confuse a lot people.

You could probably get a copy from TR47. He said he has a DVD rip of the Laserdisc. He offered to send it to me, but I've never really bought/received stuff from individual people on the Internet (and somehow I highly doubt my parents would actually support me getting a bootleg DVD off someone I don't even know from the Internet )

If you can get a copy of it and seed it, that would be awesome! Thank you very much in advance.

I totally agree. If I introduce anybody to Star Wars, I'll make sure to show them Episodes IV - VI before I - III. There a bunch of surprises in the original trilogy that will already be ruined if someone watches the prequel trilogy first (such as that little green frog man really being a great Jedi Master, Darth Vader being Luke's father (although I think everybody knows that one), Luke and Leia being brother and sister (most likely, we haven't seen Episode III yet so Lucas might have managed to keep it a secret for people who watch it I - VI for the first time, but I doubt it), and so on). Also, when people watch the original trilogy first, they'll hear about a ton of stuff like the Clone Wars, the rise of the Empire and so on and wonder about it and just imagine what those could be like. If they've seen the prequels first, they'll already know about it and will just be like "yeah, yeah, we know how it goes, already!" when they hear about that stuff in the original trilogy. Also, some stuff that's very well explained in the original trilogy such as Jedi Knights, the Force, etc. aren't explained in much detail in the prequels and it'll probably confuse people who watch them first.

I don't have an actual link. This is all based on what I've read over at the starwars.com forums. Lots of people over there are talking about Lucasfilm making an announcement on September 8th about the DVD changes.

You might not believe Lucas said this...

It's good to have an actual quote of what he said. I remember reading about him having fought against the colorization of black and white films before and I've used that in arguments against him and his changes several times, but I didn't have any actual quotes from him.

haha

Yeah, that's why I really don't post there that much, only when there's something that I really need to speak out about. A lot of times I simply won't respond to someone who responded to me, because it seems that some people are just so pro-Lucas and pro-Special Edition and make some really ridiculous arguments.

And some of them are just sheep, plain and simple. I've heard several people say that they're fine with the changes and they'll accept because Lucas did them. Liking the changes because you like them is one thing, but liking them just because George Lucas is the one making them is just dumb. These people need to start thinking for themselves.

What would be really funny is if it turned out that all of the changes we had seen so far were fake and that the DVDs were the 1997 versions. I would laugh so hard at all the people who are so excited for the boxset and to get all these new changes.

Thank you!

I've been looking hard for any torrents of THX-1138, I even posted a request at the torrentbox.com forums, but haven't had any luck yet. It would be really great if you could do that!
