General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread
Time

Is “spice” really supposed to be an illegal drug in SW? At least, was that the intent in 1977? It’s likely a reference to the drug in Dune, but these lines from ANH have me wondering:

“My father didn’t fight in the wars. He was a navigator on a spice freighter.”

“That’s what your uncle told you. He didn’t hold with your father’s ideals, thought he should’ve stayed here and not gotten involved.”

If spice is a drug, why would Uncle Owen make up this lie that Father Skywalker was a smuggler/drug runner/criminal? It seems like if he were going to lie about his past, he’d make up something more mundane, like a navigator on a refuse barge or something. Make it seem like Father Skywalker was kind of a regular dude, something like a truck driver.

Even the way Luke says his line, I was always under the impression that it was a mundane job.

From the spice article on Wookieepedia: “The matter was brought up to George Lucas, who confirmed that spice is a drug.”

Thoughts?

The Force Awakens in 70mm IMAX
Time

Yeah, I saw it in Omnimax at the Franklin Institute in Philly.

It’s the only non-dome-formatted movie I’ve seen in a dome… honestly, it kinda sucked. Sure, the image is HUGE, but it’s very distorted. Even the Falcon escape from Jakku was super distorted.

Side note, can anyone explain what the benefit of the Falcon scene being shot in IMAX is? I’ve seen it twice in IMAX 3D and I notice nothing noteworthy about it (other than it’s exciting and totally kicks ass anyway!).

At the Omnimax showing, a little bit more of the dome was filled in during that scene… which honestly added nothing.

Ranking the Star Wars films
Time

DominicCobb said:

Yeah, as I’ve learned in this past month, TPM seems to be regarded as the best of the PT round these parts. But I think the general consensus on the inter webs is that ROTS is superior (an opinion I share).

Yeah, consensus on the web seems to be that not only is ROTS the best prequel, but that it’s also actually a good movie.

I think they’re all terrible, but it’s hard to rank them. I hadn’t seen them in a couple years, but decided to watch them a couple months ago.

I watched them in reverse order for some reason- I had been wondering about something that happened in the intro to ROTS, so I decided to watch it. Then it got me thinking about stuff in AOTC so I watched that, then I figured, might as well watch TPM to complete the experience.

I thought ROTS was terrible. I thought AOTC was slightly better. When it came time to watch TPM I thought, “ok, this is the one I always thought was the best prequel.”

I think I liked it less than AOTC, but it was extremely close.

So yeah… as of right now, as crazy as it sounds, I might rank the prequels:

AOTC
TPM
ROTS

I could watch them again to really figure it out… but I don’t want to punish myself like that.

For the record, I rank the rest of the movies:

 1. ANH
 2. ESB
 3. ROTJ
 4. TFA

It’s possible that TFA might overtake ROTJ for me. I’ll see once I’ve had it on blu ray for a few months.

Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

I think there’s plenty in ANH to show that it’s not a coincidence at all that Ben lives near Luke and has his father’s lightsaber:

“That’s what your uncle told you. He didn’t hold with your father’s ideals. Thought he should have stayed here and not gotten involved.”

“Your father wanted you to have this when you were old enough, but your uncle wouldn’t allow it. He feared you might follow old Obi-Wan on some damn fool idealistic crusade like your father did.”

Based on these quotes, I think it’s pretty easy to assume that Luke’s father was from Tatooine (in 1977, he was Owen’s brother after all), and while on Tatooine, met Ben and followed him on a crusade. It even implies Ben was originally from Tatooine, so it makes even more sense that he still lives there.

ROTJ is the best Star Wars film... discuss!

It was great that the only version I had seen of it for the first few years was a VHS recorded off of a TV broadcast that omitted the droid torture scene and the scene where threepio explains the entire trilogy complete with sound effects to the ewok village. When I finally saw the official version a few years later I didn’t understand why those scenes were necessary and have since come to see them as some of the worst scenes in the entire OT, so whoever edited down for time for TV made some good decisions.

Same here! I had a copy that was taped off TV, had to FFW through the commercials and everything. Both those scenes were edited out, as were some others, such as when that guy consoles the Rancor-keeper after the Rancor dies.

That droid torture scene… bleh.

HAN SOLO: The Redemption That Saved The Galaxy
Time

Sigh.

Han was never cold-blooded and firing on Greedo first doesn’t make him cold-blooded either. It was self-defense. Greedo was pointing a gun at him and essentially said, “I’m going to kill you.”

If Han is cold-blooded for shooting Greedo, so is Obi Wan for killing one guy and slicing off another’s arm in the cantina.

Info Wanted: The best audio, and differences between the many audio tracks available?

Here’s an awesome video Space Hunter M made comparing the Dolby and Mono mixes:

Not really a “find”, since I made it, but I put together a very basic video of all of the major differences between the Dolby/Mono mixes of the original film since the Starkiller Guide doesn’t function properly anymore and was missing quite a few bits: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeXpcYcZNDw

What didn't you like about TFA? SPOILERS
Time

NeverarGreat said:
It is in the strength or weakness of its emotional content that a film succeeds or fails, since people rationalize any experience which they find emotionally compelling, regardless of its internal logic. So the extent to which people are defending the conveniences of ANH while disparaging similar conveniences in TFA speaks to the differing levels of emotional investment in these two films.

I think you’re absolutely right. This is a really good point.

I think it helps contribute to why many people (myself included) think the PT is so awful. You’re not emotionally invested, and on top of it, you can nitpick it apart. The problems begin to compound on themselves, making the movie so much worse.

Have you noticed any differences in various screenings of TFA? [SPOILERS!]
Time

Let me start by saying, it’s probably very unlikely that are different versions of TFA being screened (at least right now- but it wouldn’t surprise me at all if there’s a different cut for the China release).

But I just wanted to see if anyone has noticed anything different in various screenings of TFA.

I’ve seen TFA 3 times. The 2nd and 3rd viewings seemed the same to me, but were different from the 1st viewing.

1st viewing: Before sledding down the giant dune, Rey looks down it for a couple seconds, as if deciding what to do, then sleds down.

2nd and 3rd viewings: We cut to Rey already sledding down the dune.

1st viewing: Rey is cleaning the scrap she has scavenged. She looks at the old lady who is also cleaning scrap. Rey looks back at what she’s cleaning, then looks at the old lady a 2nd time (ie, we see the old lady’s face in 2 shots). Then the guy with the metal face says something to Rey.

2nd and 3rd viewings: We see the old lady’s face only once.

1st viewing: During Rey’s vision, I heard what sounded like Luke screaming (either “Noooo!” from ESB in the Vader confrontation, or him screaming in pain as the Emperor tortures him with lightning in ROTJ. Can’t remember which).

2nd and 3rd viewing: When this scene came on, I was specifically listening for Luke again, but could not hear him.

1st viewing: This one is probably the most unlikely, as I’m probably conflating the movie with something I read shortly afterwards, but I really thought someone in the movie mentioned that the location of the Republic capital rotated every few years or something. I can’t imagine where in the movie this would possibly fit though, so I highly doubt it happened.

2nd and 3rd viewings: No mention of this.
