I would love to see Luke with his intended blue lightsaber in this Revisited version. They only made it green because of the blue sky on tatooine.

Granted George Lucas has contradicted himself many times over the years with regards to Star Wars, so who knows what the real story is, but the one I heard was that George made the saber green in Jedi to make it clear it’s a different one to the one Luke lost on Bespin.

Just as a test, here’s the beginning of the sail barge sequence with flipped shots put back:

It’s more jarring than the original, without a doubt. Although, I do like that Mark Hamill’s face is flipped back to normal now. I think that’s the main giveaway.

Can’t say I found any issue with those shots flipped back, I followed along fine with where the barge was heading and the other ships location to it.

I quite agree. The viewer can follow the action just fine, and quite frankly I’m seriously struggling to see why it was flipped in the first place, as IMHO this version is infinitely superior. The only possible quibble from pedants I can see is that when they finally arrive at the Sarlacc the skiffs are now on the barge’s left side instead of the right, but since they’re all flying vehicles with vast space around them on all sides, and we don’t witness the entire trip, surely it’s not beyond the wit of the viewer to assume the skiff moved to the other side at some point before the journey’s end? Donald Trump might struggle to understand it, but regular humans with at least double-digit IQs won’t. I didn’t watch that clip and think, ‘My God! The skiff’s teleported!’

Please keep politics out of this discussion. Thank you.

My apologies, will do.

so, you find those who will watch the movie as edited and released to be the pedants, and those who want to ‘unflip’ all shots because it is driving them crazy to not be the pedants?

Well since that’s not what I said, no I don’t.

And I see that my last reply arrived moments after Ady’s post (which had not yet posted when I started composing my reply), and contradicts his viewpoint totally!.. Oh well, each to their own, and it is quite obviously his edit to do with as he sees fit. Personally I hope those shots get flipped back, but if they aren’t I’m not going to cry about it. I’m grateful for any and everything Ady gives us, and I’ve lived with these flips for this long, I’m sure I can live with them a little longer if that’s his decision 😃

Glad to finally hear you guys put an end to this constant search for flipped shots. they are flipped for a reason, as some posters above have clearly explained.

It doesn’t matter. The flipped elements can be partially or wholly flipped back and maintain composition. It’s just as distracting to see R2 mirrored as having him move counter to the flow of the action.

I disagree on your second point (flipped elements are only noticed by obsessive fans on repeat viewings, whereas a bad cut is obvious to anyone, whether or not they understand why), but yes, if the offending elements can be changed without flipping the whole shot back, then that should absolutely be done.

As someone with a fine art training in my experience people generally notice these things at a gut level. I noticed the flip shots in the phantom menace on first viewing.

I’ve seen that film more times than I care to admit and I don’t even know what they are off the top of my head. Also, since I guess we’re listing credentials, I work as a video editor.

Well, as someone with no relevant credentials, I can confirm that I often spot flipped shots on the first viewing of a film (and not just Star Wars). Naturally there will be many, many more occasions where I have not spotted them, but often they stick out like sore thumbs to me, and I find them extremely jarring.

Continuity errors bug the hell out of me as they smack of, at the very least poor planning, and at worst, poor film-making, and I place flipped shots firmly in the continuity error category for being deemed ‘necessary’ in the first place to avoid jarring 180 degree rule breaches. With more competent planning, most flipped shots should be completely avoidable, but if the director hasn’t got the footage shot, the poor editor is screwed and has to make do with what they have.

Personally, I’ve always thought it made perfect sense that Boba Fett might be found hanging out in Jabba’s vicinity, since he obviously works for him at least some of the time. I therefore have no problem at all with his presence in the film, but each to his or her own in that regard.

However, I do feel his rather feeble end could certainly be improved, and so since Ady has said Boba will be staying in the film, I look forward to seeing what he decides to do in that regard.

I don’t think these flipped shots were being pointed out as needing to be flipped back, but that certain elements in the shots can be corrected.

Exactly. I don’t mean to make light of the work involved, as I’m sure it’s not easy at all, even for someone with Ady’s talents, but if some of the worst offenders can be improved (Boba Fett’s flipped shots in Jabba’s Palace leap to mind, along with Jabba’s nostrils… not a sentence I get to type very often 😉), it would be wonderful.

I’d never noticed Carrie’s birthmark before, but I’ve certainly noticed Jabba’s massive and lop-sided nostrils flipping from side to side in the Sail Barge scenes. I’ve always detested flipped shots as once you’ve seen them they invariably become impossible not to see. Hopefully at least some of them may be fixable in this edit.

Firstly, congratulations and thank you for ESB:R. It’s a stellar achievement and I genuinely believe in years to come, it will increasingly be considered the definitive version of Empire, not just by those of us that have already seen it, but by vast numbers of Star Wars fans around the world who have yet to enjoy its delights. Once they watch it, they’ll become converts 😃

Regarding ROTJ:R, I’m delighted (but not surprised) to hear that the execrable ‘Jedi Rocks’ is going. You didn’t say, but I am assuming and hoping that ‘Lapti Nek’ will be restored?

As for new change suggestions, I’m sure I’ll think of some (almost all of which you will already have thought of yourself, no doubt!), so for now I will content myself by hoping that you find a way of unflipping / re-filming the Boba Fett scenes in Jabba’s Palace where his antenna is suddenly on the wrong side of his helmet due to flipping the shot. It’s always bugged me and takes me right out of the film.

In fact they are only called “speeder” in the movie, not “snowspeeder”.

And in every other medium since, including the licensed toys brought out by Kenner whilst the film was still playing in cinemas around the world, and in Donald F. Glut’s official novelisation of the film published by Ballantine in 1980 and which is also advertised in the end credits of the film itself, the official Lucasfilm name for those particular ships has been ‘snowspeeders’. Therefore it is not incorrect to call them ‘snowspeeders’. I don’t see what’s so difficult for you to understand about that. I didn’t see you grumbling about everyone calling the ‘wampa’ the ‘wampa’, even though the creature is not named in the film itself and is only referred to as ‘Snow Creature’ in the film’s credits.

More superb work! Thank you so much for doing these, they’re much appreciated. One small quibble though, the things you keep calling A-Wings are actually Snowspeeders, but otherwise truly stellar work that really highlights the amazing transformation Ady and his team pulled off!

I can only repeat how truly superb this edit is, and is so vastly beyond my own talents that I hesitate to even mention this, however if I’m right it’s probably something you will want to fix…

I noticed at 22:42 that you can still see the matte boxes around the TIE fighters and possibly also the foreground Star Destroyer when the TIEs fly in front of the Executor.

Also, is it my imagination, but can I still see C-3PO’s fingertip falling down next to Han’s leg at 52:04?

These are of course trivial next to the brilliance of the overall work, and perhaps I am just seeing compression artifacts and not errors. Thank you so much once again for making this edit.

Ady, I’m so sorry to hear about the wampa problems, especially after all your hard work getting it to this point. It must be extremely frustrating for you. I’m sure that you will have thought it through long and hard before taking the decision not to use the wampa, and if there was any way to get even some limited use out of your efforts, I’m sure you would. So if your final decision is that it cannot be used, then I’m sure you are correct. It’s a terrible shame, but your decision won’t have been taken lightly, and I hope everyone can respect it.

As ever, thank you a thousand times over for taking on this project in the first place. ESBR will be superb, and like everyone else, I’m really excited to see your final version.

Hi Ady,

To save our good friend jedimasterobiwan the trouble of asking, can I please check whereabouts in ESB Revisited the fabulous new nugget will feature? I hope I’m not ruffling any feathers, but will it be in a new eggciting scene with Princess Layer? Or perhaps in the cock-pit of Hen Solo’s Millhennium Falcon? Or maybe in a scene where Lando keeps his capon?

At any rate, wherever you add it, I’ve long admired your pluck with this project and know you’ll do your very breast. And as an added bonus, being just a nugget hopefully you didn’t have to shell out more than a poultry sum and can quickly re-coop your outlay, as I know you have a very busy rooster of things planned for ROJR, which won’t come cheep.

I know you’re stuffing this edit with things you might not want to crow about, but how did you hatch the plan to add the nugget? Did someone give you a leg up, or did you just wing it? If one of your ideas proves to be fowl, do you just peck yourself up and start all over again? The best laid plans and all that…

Anyway, I’m really eggstatic about this edit as it looks clucking great!

Goodbye sweet hangar set! We didn’t know you very long, but in your all-too-short existence, you existed. Shortly. Before you didn’t. Oh, but in those splendid few days what a thing of majesty and beauty (and polystyrene) you truly were! Never could you have thought for one instant (because you are incapable of thought, being as you are an inanimate collection of processed hydrocarbons, but if you could think, never could you have thought) when you were just a few humble sheets of packing material that your destiny would be to replace a sub-standard matte painting in one of the greatest films, and THE greatest fan edit of all time!

Oh sure, there was the cutting, the slicing and the trimming, not to mention the hot wire scorching through your delicate frame, but that’s the price you pay for making great art, and my word, you certainly ended up looking a lot more like an ice and snow cavern than when you started, plus you have the added consolation to accompany you on your way into your new multi-part dioramic and bin existence, that your best side was truly captured for posterity (but NOT prosperity) by a genius, and is forever immortalized in glorious 720p and without a rubbish blue cast! So well done, and farewell!

… OK, I was bored. Get over it 😉

You say your ‘interest in the Revisited project has long since fizzled out’, and yet you still find the time to troll this forum with your worthless opinion. And your opinion is worthless on this forum if all you’re doing is posting here to complain about the fact that the project is taking longer than you personally would like it to, that you would rather Ady did something different to what he’s actually going to with regards to releasing it, and to grumble that you’re no longer interested in the project.

If you don’t like it here, why don’t you leave?

Oh, shut up. I hang out in other threads here. I’m not trolling; I just have an opinion, and decided to convey it. I did say “Ady can do what he wants.” It’s his project, not mine. And the forum exists, not just to follow projects, but to have conversations about them.

I don’t have to leave just because you take personal offense for no reason.

And I’m not “entitled.” I just wish I had something to tide me over because I really don’t care about any OT SE edits other than this one, nor any offical releases post-GOUT, so the only SEs that I acknowledge at all are what Adywan is doing with them.

Damn it, I make one negative comment and you guys are ready to throw me out an airlock. Grow up.

Well before I do ‘shut up’ (thank you for that, by the way. Very mature) I would point out that it was you that claimed in your first post that your ‘interest in the Revisited project has long since fizzled out’, and then in your second post that you ‘don’t care about any OT SE edits other than this one’.

Can you make up your mind please? Or are you too busy telling me to shut up in one breath and then extolling the virtues of having and conveying an opinion in the next (as long as it’s not mine, presumably)?

I feel like this project is generating new things to delay it. Adywan and the crew can do whatever they want, but I feel a better approach would have been to release a v1.0 for ESB:R and ROTR:R and continue improving through different versions.

I find that, because this is what Harmy is doing with his restorations, I am continually interested in the Star Wars franchise beyond any other franchise I like. However, as ESB:R alone is is 9 or so years in the making without a release in the can, my interest in the Revisited project has long since fizzled out.

Again, Ady can do what he wants with his own project, but I wish we had something feature length at this point, even if it was technically unfinished.
