Did I dream it all?
Time

At this point I’m starting to wonder if I just dreamed it all…

A number of years ago I was watching a watchmojo list and what I saw I liked so much I stopped watching so I wouldn’t spoil myself any further. But since then, what I saw is such a hazy memory in my mind, I can’t work out whether it is real or not! At first I thought it may have been Taxi Driver (only because of the taxi association) but I saw it recently and it’s clearly not.

Would anyone know if this is actually from a film?

This is what I remember:
A man sits in the driver’s seat of a taxi in the driveway of a hotel late at night.

Driveway
^ Similar to this, undercover, but much bigger (the drive is almost three lanes wide).

He’s not sitting right at the front of the hotel so the lighting is dim. He has a passenger in the back, a woman (possibly quite young) who he has been transporting for quite a while. She has a gun to the back of his head, and wants him to continue driving or not to stop here – either way she isn’t happy. The driver has had enough; he doesn’t want to have any more part in doing whatever he has been forced or convinced to do. After a tense conversation, the woman may or may not kill the man (I think this is tragic as he has been essentially helping her for the entire film) and leave him dead in his car, as she gets out and walks off (possibly into the hotel)…

The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **
Time

I’m possibly more excited for Rogue One than I was for TFA…Though I actively try not to get too hyped as I can easily imagine a film that is impossibly good in my head and become disappointed!

It might have something to do with the fact I have an emotional connection to more things that will appear in Rogue One than appeared in TFA. If I had too choose between more SW we’ve had before or completely new SW I’d choose more of the old. I’m hoping it will not only be a good film in its own right but also enrich ANH.

Had a couple weeks of holidays and tried to watch as many films as I could, here’s a rough ranking with some thoughts:

Excellent:

Interstellar (Wow, what an experience!)
Persona (Utterly captivating)
Shutter Island (Throws you around in the best possible way, such great style too)

Great:

Platoon (Great characters, superb action which never appears contrived)
Ex Machina (Concise and smart. Didn’t try to overstretch itself)
LOTR: The Two Towers (Watched this in two sittings, the second sitting really dragged and the silliness stuck out more than I remember. FOTR and the first half of TTT were just as amazing as I remember though).
Robocop (1987) (Has violence ever been so fun? Much better than I thought, terrific practical effects)
Gattaca (Nice atmosphere, love the dreamy vibe and characters)

Good:

Sicario (Phenomenal first half, only solid second)
Rear Window (Always interesting, love that it takes place in a single location)
Taxi Driver (Was constantly interrupted while watching and finished after 3 hours, need a second watch to properly appreciate)
Macbeth (Visually impressive, dialog very difficult to literally hear)
Bronson (Only watched because it was a NWR film and well, it was good – just didn’t enjoy Bronson as a character very much, you can still see NWR in it though)
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009) (As a fan of the book, this was a little disappointing. It’s not bad, just half-baked compared to the book. The things they did tweak though were the best parts)

Just decent:

13 Assassins (Some good parts but ultimately felt like watching a video game)
Escape From New York (Kinda clunky and flat. It’s the perfect movie for an 8 year old but content wise it’s not a kids film?)
POTC: On Stranger Tides (Good action, fun, but nothing special)

Not good:

The Princess Diaries 2 (I didn’t hate myself while watching but there was no shortage of huge eye roll moments)

Comedy: (It never feels right to compare serious films with comedies…)

Attack of the Ridiculous (Lives up the first, practically non-stop laughs – great work Frink! Favorite moments - The Clones arrive at Geonosis, Obi-Wan and Jango’s Asteroid fight and Anakin and Padme’s relationship is taken…“further”)

I love the world of Star Wars more than the actual films themselves…which is why I’ll probably never hate a Star Wars film (unless they drastically drop in quality ie Holiday Special). I’m fascinated by creatures, planets, ships ect. It’s a magical universe that I was captivated by even before I’d seen any of the movies!

They still pull that stuff in classes. Except they’re pixelated, heavily compressed videos ripped off the internet.

That kind of thing really annoys me tbh, either show something or don’t. This, “oh you can see behind this censorship is what we want to show you but we’re not allowed to so just look at this black box or pixilated mess and imagine what’s behind it…” makes no sense.

And another netizen gets lost on his way to the anime thread…

That was probably a throwaway joke but I’ve no clue what you’re trying to say…

I figured by “pixelated”, he meant “pixelated from being a low-quality video taken from YouTube”.

Ah…yep. That’s exactly what he meant haha. My bad!

The Usual Suspects (1995) – ★★★★

Just fantastic.

Agreed. I watched it for the first time a year ago, and I’m so grateful that I didn’t have the twist spoiled for me.

I hate spoilers/knowing too much about a movie before I see it (to the point of never watching trailers, still haven’t seen a single Rogue One one) and unfortunately I think I’ve had this film spoiled for me, but…

!SPOILER WARNING!

Is knowing there’s a traitor/rat in the group a movie breaking spoiler? Just hoping maybe I haven’t been spoiled as much as I thought I might have been…

Knowing that there is one isn’t much of a spoiler at all. It’s pretty much the plot of the movie. The only thing that’ll hinder your experience is knowing who it is.

Oh fantastic! Thanks, I know nothing else about the film other than that fact so I’m alright! That’s a big relief haha 😃

Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Despecialized Edition HD - V3.1
Time

clutchins said:

I think that would be good for the absolute final version of 3.x since all three films would be completely despecialized at that point. That way Harmy could potentially talk about each part as it went through all versions of DeEd.

I would love to listen to a track like that! Would really complete the despecialised experience.

I can never understand how people can flip so completely on films (and music for that matter) that they once loved. The Phantom Menace was the first Star Wars film I ever saw at age 10 and I loved it. Even though I now realize it’s objectively a bad movie I still really enjoy watching it.

It’s called “maturity.”

And I’m not taking a shot at your age, I was 26 when I saw it in the theaters three times and loved it. But only because I wanted to. Then I found this place (and FE) and grew up.

So you’re not taking a shot at my age just my maturity 😉 (I’m joking, it’s all cool)
Yeah, I get what you’re saying but…I think that once I commit to liking something and develop a connection with it, I don’t lose that. My tastes continue to evolve and broaden as I get older but they aren’t overwritten - but that’s just me!

Casino Royale.

The best bad movie ever made.
The one film they should use to teach everyone what NOT to do. EVER. UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

I read ‘Casino Royale’ then skipped to the start of your review and mentally freaked out. Then I saw ‘1967’ and took a deep breath hahah…

I actively try to not let any one else’s opinion effect my own personal enjoyment/connection with things, they certainly impact by objective view but I try to enjoy everything I watch as much as I can regardless!
I think in this IMDB ratings/RT score age we’re all getting caught up in whether something is objectionably good or not that we completely forgot to enjoy ourselves.

I love stats so also enjoy looking at grades, stars, percentage scores ect but they still are no substitute for a legitimate review (I also never know whether people are trying to be 100% objective as possible or just rating on “how much they enjoyed the film”). I don’t rate films personally myself (too much of a perfectionist) but found this article hilarious when doing some research on the whole thing:

I’ve never understood the appeal of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. The character’s a narcissist and a sociopath who has his ego fellated by everyone around him and never receives his comeuppance. I’m really supposed to root for this guy?

As far as I’m concerned, Rooney was the real hero.

I haven’t seen Ferris Bueller’s Day Off but when I saw Pulp Fiction I think I had a similar reaction. I’d heard so much about how Samuel L Jackson was awesome ect ect but I ended up liking Travolta’s character much more. 10 mins into the film and Jackson’s intimidating and shooting all these kids and I’m thinking, this is this is what people love him for? I certainly didn’t dislike him in the film but he wasn’t nearly my fav.

That 70mm series that I mentioned a few weeks back started last night with Lawrence of Arabia. In spite of having seen it in a theater as a DCP just three months ago, I decided to go again, knowing it would gnaw at me forever if I didn’t see the print. The print itself was from the 1989 restoration, and aside from some missing frames around the first few reel changes, it was absolutely pristine. Barring Disney striking new 70mm prints of the OUT at some point (which I guess isn’t completely out of the question since they did so for TFA), it doesn’t seem possible that any theater experience will ever top this.

Tomorrow I’m heading back in to see the only existing 70mm print of Sleeping Beauty. Definitely won’t make it to anything during the week, but on Friday night I plan on going back for 2001: a Space Odyssey. I’d like to see something else that weekend too, but I haven’t made any decisions yet as to what. Perhaps Spartacus.

Wow, that sounds amazing. The only IMAX theater in Australia that is capable of running 70mm prints is closing down next week and won’t reopen till 2019 with some new digital projectors 😦 So as far as I know by the end of next week nowhere in Aus will you be able to see a 70mm film. Unless of course a theater brings in a once off showing like the Hateful Eight enabled a couple of places to do…
