The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released)

If it means anything, I showed the new Mustafar sequence to a couple people that don’t know the movie nearly as well as the folks here do and they had no idea that wasn’t how the movie was originally presented. I think the smoke highlights in the first new shot could be brought down like mentioned before, but otherwise I think the continuity of the TIE flyby sells the sequence.

Also, hi again after like 5000 replies! What a fast moving thread haha.

Hello again everyone!

I really like what ultimately ended up happening with DotF playing over the DSII duel. Feels like a real good compromise. Hal, to answer your question from 10,000 years ago, I slowed down that version of DotF myself to better sync it to the scene.

Regarding the Mustafar Minute, I have a couple thoughts. I think the sequence flowed better when you cut from the interior of the troop transport straight to Kylo’s close-up, since the shot composition inside the transport is pretty tight. As is, you’re cutting from wide landscape -> wide of landers… landing -> tight inside landers -> wide of troops -> tight on Kylo. Going tight, then wide, then tight again gives the scene a weird rhythm I feel.

I also think the landscape shot should be mirrored so that the TIEs are traveling from left to right. Every other First Order element in this sequence are either facing or traveling left to right: the Star Destroyer is pointing screen right, the landers and troopers move screen right, and Kylo fights his way through the forest from left to right. It’s a little thing, but continuity of motion goes a long way.

So, here’s the link to the DotF DSII duel edit I mentioned earlier. The transition out of the song into the film’s actual score still needs a little work but otherwise, I’m pretty happy with it. Apologies for the overall low quality, I’m not sure where to find good quality clips from the film, so I screen recorded off of Disney+ on my PC for the video and ripped the music from YouTube.

Later in the video, when Rey heals Kylo, is a leftover from some experimentation I was doing with the back half of the video. Leading up to the voices (again, while Rey is healing Kylo), the audio would have been sucked out by the “Force Bond” sound effect and all the foley is replaced with a low rumble (to try to make it seem like Rey is getting pissed) and the second half of Anakin’s Dark Deeds. The foley slowly comes back in as she loses the upper hand – albeit distant and echoey – and then returns to normal when Leia calls out to Ben. I definitely don’t think the voices would work for this fan edit, but I thought it was interesting and ironic how well the visuals and VO lined up so I decided to share it regardless.

On a personal note, thinking back over my long history jacking around with this set of particular movies, I really feel like it’s time to stop. I can’t keep doing this and the obsession needs to end.

I’m going to see this project through, and give it as good a release as we can. I’ll even hold out in order to release an alternate ‘Rey Nobody’ cut.

But once it gets laid in place, there will probably not be a V2. Any and everyone will be more than welcome to take it and run with it to tweak and do with what they please. I’ll put out a lossless audio export and all.

But I have to make a decisive break with this when this is over. Otherwise I’ll see imperfections and be tempted to get sucked back into it. It served a purpose earlier in my life that was helpful, then I went back to it to do it right in 2013, and I’ve been pretty focused since. The prequels have been given several passes, the OT is about as reasonably good as I ever thought they’d be, TFA is wonderful, TLJ is nice, and TROS will be more fun. There will always be unfortunate aspects of them, imperfections, and issues. But I need to let go of them and let them lay.

I thank you all again for continuing to make this last hurrah surprisingly fun, but that’s what it’s going to be.

I’ve, like, never posted here except to ask where to find copies of fanedits before, and I just wanted to thank you for all the work you’ve put in to your edits. I was introduced to fanedits with your cut of RotS back in 2015, which I stumbled upon by complete accident. I’ve enjoyed speculating about and brainstorming for and following fanedits ever since, even if I never really engaged with the community.

So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you Hal. You’ve changed my life in a small but significant way.

If you’re still looking for voices for the big fleet, I’d love to contribute. I’ve also toyed around with adding an instrumental, John Williams composed (but slowed slightly down to fit the slower pace of the duel) version of Duel of the Fates to the Death Star II duel, if that idea hasn’t been completely discarded.

Yeah, I made this account quite a while ago when I first heard about these edits, and then promptly forgot about it, haha. I’m pretty pumped to see these edits in proper quality for the first time once the 4.1 editions drop; I’ve only had the pleasure of watching an older cut of Labyrinth of Evil that was briefly uploaded to YouTube before it was promptly taken down.
