Slightly OT:Betamax tape surgery question...

Turns out you were right! I was able to stick the little plastic tape guide thingy right back where it came from. The glue was still nice and tacky, so it's odd it ever fell off to begin with. Alas, my well came up dry. The video turned out to be nothing more than a bad bootleg of the CBS/Fox video. (With a "please rewind" sticker on it!) At least I have a working Beta deck now.

Was the Original Trilogy ever released to Super VHS?
Time
Okay, I've been using S-VHS since 1988, pretty much the year it was introduced. The only pre-recorded titles I ever saw were from Paramount and the late Orion Pictures. They must have been marketed pretty badly, as I only ever saw them for sale at a high end video store where I bought my first editing decks way back in 1993. AFAIK, Fox never licensed films in any other videotape formats besides regular VHS and Beta. Ironically, they have released titles in the recent HDTV Digital VHS format, but not Star Wars...
And for the acronym confused, Super-VHS is the semi-pro broadcast cousin of VHS. It boasts 400 line resolution. (About equal with LD, but without LD's video gremlins.) It carved out a niche with people wanting to shoot better looking video in those happy go lucky pre-DV days and small tv stations that couldn't afford to go Sony. It never really caught the attention of Joe VHS consumer, but did find a second niche as a way to record digital sattelite for several years. There are still a few decks on the market, but they are pale ghosts of the machines I have. Most VHS decks on the market now have the undocumented feature of playing back S-VHS tapes at VHS resolution. (Kind of pointless, IMHO.) And now, you know the rest of the story!

Slightly OT:Betamax tape surgery question...
Time
I have aqquired a very old Beta cassette with a homemade Star Wars label on it. I should have a Betamax deck to try it out later this week, but something has broken off inside the cassette and would foul the takeup reel if I don't crack it open and remove it. It's been years since I've done tape surgery, and never on a Beta before. Should I be able to take the reels and physically put them in a different Beta shell if the need arises? I once actually had to wind a U-matic tape completely onto new reels because the old reels from a damaged cassette would not turn freely in a shell of more modern manufacture.

Help: looking for... star wars ITV broadcast version
Time
The irony is when Star Wars finally aired on CBS in 1984, it got kicked in the ratings by a trashy miniseries called "Lace". It had already been shown a zillion times on HBO and other cable movie outlets before that. Not to mention being one of the early "pay per view" events.
It would be nice if someone had the CBS airing though. Mark Hamill did a little intro for the movie. Some footage from the Making of Star Wars was used as well as scenes of a family whose collection was devouring their house!

Preserving the...cringe...Star Wars Holiday Special (Released)
Time
Funny you should mention betamax, as I recently aqquired a mysterious old beta tape with a homemade Star Wars label, and I won't know what's on it until I get a deck later in the week! I see quite a few batches of home recorded beta tapes on ebay these days, but the sellers usually dodge the matter of what could be on them for fear ebay will kill the auction for selling bootleg material.

The Original Trilogy on "free" tv...
Time

While checking the website of the Los Angeles UPN station trying to find out when the heck Enterprise was going to be on, (they bumped it for baseball last night, those %$#@!) I noticed Star Wars is going to be on tonight, and Empire will be on next Saturday night. Presumably Jedi will follow that, the website does not go that far ahead though.
Has anyone spotted the trilogy on tv lately? And was it the 97’s or the DVD cuts? Episode IV seemed to be on basic cable a lot not long after the 20th anniversary, but I haven’t seen Empire or Jedi on tv in years…

Discussion: It's finally happened...
Time
Nope. I'm American. I spotted that in a thread on another board about really bad SW merchandise and my head simply exploded. The site it's from http://www.toysrgus.com/collectors.html has literally every item that's ever been made. This has to be the capper to someone's collection.
