Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD**

Hopefully the cinematographers style is tamed a bit. I like Mindel's stuff but the lens flares and frenzied fast shaky cam is kind of not my cup of tea.

Less like Amazing Spider-man 2 or Star Trek Into Darkness. More like the first three star wars made in the seventies and eighties.

I think that was more Webb and Abrams than anyone else. Savages and John Carter, shot by Mindel for other directors, have none of those attributes.

Anyway, it looks like Dennis Lawson isn't coming back:

Holy misleading headline, Batman! He never said drop dead. I wish sites like that would report the news, and spare us the editorializing. My college journalism prof would have bopped me on the head for writing stuff like that. The original slashfilm article is way better.

Would Lawson really tell us he's doing the movie if it's a surprise? ;)

So since Hell froze over, Fox and WB finally came to terms - Batman '66 on DVD

It's possible Paramount only offers the remastered episodes for syndication these days. Syndication sales were one driving motivation for the remaster. (And those running the station don't know the difference anyway.) I imagine the original SD TNG episodes will eventually vanish whenever Sci Fi's option on them run out.

An old tube set isn't going to be much good to you without a outboard digital converter box in 2014. ;)

Sexual orientation might not even be a big deal in the SW universe. Are there even any sexual scenes in any of the books?

Some people have accused Ziro the Hutt of being a flaming gay stereotype, although there is no onscreen evidence of it.

In the Marvel comic, former Senator Simon Greyshade and his shiny pal Master Com might have been the first robosexuals though. At least the parody comic Jaxxon's 11 ran with the idea. ;)

ITV (One of the older UK TV channels) has been running the PT over the last few weeks and I've dipped in to them when channel hopping. ITV seem to always chop down the films they show to 16:9... because they are philistines clearly. So these were 16:9 versions of the PT.

My gods, if you thought the PT looked bad in scope, then you ain't seen nothing yet. Zoomed like this they look soft to the point of cheesy and cheap daytime soap-opera and being closeup on the actors faces further reveals how horribly, horribly these films are edited together e.g. TPM uses shots of Cpt Paneka quickly glancing off camera at the crew/director/something while speaking (Like he was reading lines off of an idiot board). I hadn't seen how bad these moments are at the distnce that scope provides and the SFX looks considerably worse. So sloppy for films produced on these budgets.

Contrast that, with me repeatedly watching ANH footage (Almost frame-by-frame) for my 'Lost Workprint' cut and it's night and day. I reccomend the next time anybody watches ANH, they just train there eyes on Alec Guinness' face. There is a whole 'nother film going on there while the action is happening and the other actors are talking.

You should see the 4:3 pan and scan DVD's. ;)

IIRC, Lucas was shooting multi camera on AOTC and ROTS, so the soap opera analogy is spot on. I think single camera is more appropriate for movies, the exception being when you need coverage on a one take affair like a stunt or blowing something up.

When I've seen the prequels run on Spike TV, my cable company compresses the signal so much, it makes the CGI look really really flat and really really bad.

I really don't care for any of the Terminator films anymore. They were great when I was a little kid, but I just can't enjoy them as an adult. I just look at the first 2 Terminator films, and it's like I see a huge door that James Cameron opened for all these shitty action movie directors like Michael Bay and Roland Emmerich. James Cameron wasn't the first action movie director, but he is like the pinnacle of action movie directors, not saying that in a good way.

Isn't that like blaming Spielberg and Lucas for ushering in the era of Summer Blockbusters? ;)

Besides "The films need to be the way I want them," has Lucas stated anything as to why the Blu-rays became the travesty that they are?

We're fucked. And that link where Drew talks about Lucas watching the OOT and sinking in his chair the way we do when we watch the SE is particularly heartbreaking. I think it's further damning evidence that like a certain other sci-fi luminary, we're fighting a war we've already lost.

This site, and certain projects carried on by it's members, are proof we are not screwed. It may take a little while, but we really don't need George or Disney to provide the OOT anymore. The fans are doing it.

Star Wars #19

Been re-reading the original Marvel Star Wars run. It gets a bad rap because of the terrible first original storyline. All anyone seems to remember is that dumb green rabbit but there's so much more than that. Once Archie Goodwin took over it really grabbed onto that Star Wars feel and held tight for years. Lots of good stories that are completely overlooked because of one bad first impression.

I thought it was pretty good for a Kurosawa homage.

Dumb green rabbit?! Of course you know, this means war...

Fantasia - 35mm preservation opportunity (* unfinished project / WIP? *)

Didn't they transfer the Fantasound masters over to more normal recording gear around that time?

That album was released on reel to reel, so it might be a better option than vinyl for a preservation.
