2019 always was too optimistic (like 1997 in Lost in Space and Escape from New York). 3019 was more reasonable.

The LIS comic, written by Will Robinson himself, Billy Mumy, introduced the idea that recovered alien technology was used to achieve interstellar travel by the 1990's. And the shadowy figures giving Dr. Smith his orders also had a sinister alien background.

Still, I love that the Jupiter 2 launched on my birthday, and the SciFi channel marathon held in 1997 was a fun day for me.

There isn't anything in EFNY that wasn't impossible in the real 1997. I'm sure the inevitable soulless remake will push the date ahead a tad.

There will be little to nothing to post.

Any social media whether tweets or facebook will probably be false leads from the studio. The modern day Blue Harvest.

 ?

A month in and we already have official information on the location shooting, pictures of the studio, pictures of the entire cast in a read-through, a picture of Chewie on-set from the CEO of Disney, a letter from the director, two videos from the director - one with the screenwriter - one from the set, and most likely a few bits that have slipped past me.

On the contrary, I feel like Abrams has gone out of his way to let people know what's happening.  He also seems to be deliberate in helping fans, particularly of the OT, feel included and welcome.

Lucas went out of his way to shun the original fans, to the point of being deliberately hateful and disrespectful.  Abrams appears to be trying to heal decades of Lucas' mental abuse.

This isn't even close to Blue Harvest.

Let's not confuse Lucas' treatment of OOT fans with the actual production of ROTJ.

Blue Harvest was an attempt to keep filming locations from being mobbed, keep the paparazzi away, and also to keep local merchants from price gouging. Imagine what they would charge for food and lodging, if someone let slip they were filming a Star Wars movie down the road! ;)

And the resourceful fans who found the Jabba's Barge set in Yuma were not chased away. The sight of Luke, dressed all in black, set off a wave of wild speculation that he was going to join up with dear old dad.

The original fan club sold Blue Harvest hats and t shirts for years afterward.

There was a live webcam that allowed glimpses of what was going down on the Episode III set. That was all archived on the official site for a time. It would be nice if they did something like that again.

I totally agree J.J. and company are rolling out the welcome mat, and what I've seen so far makes me feel pretty good about Star Wars. That hasn't happened in a long time.

It's silly to call a film set in the real world "dated" for reflecting the year/era it was made.

Movies that try to predict what the future will look like often date badly. We've only got seven months left for flying cars and working hoverboards to hit the market, and for a chain of Cafe '80's to open up.
 ;)

Perhaps, in the aftermath, the audience could see a lot of Imperial propaganda being put out about how crucial it was for Alderaan to be blown up, by describing terrible things perpetrated by its people against other planets, that, of course, never actually happened on the planet. Maybe, this propaganda about the system was already being made, before Alderaan even met its end?

I don't think Alderaan was on the Empire's hit list until Leia was exposed as a rebel spy. Tarkin seems to have made the decision to destroy it only when Leia resisted interrogation. Had Dantooine not been so remote, he might have backed off, but as it was, some well known planet was going to be blown up sooner or later to prove the Death Star worked.

Post destruction propaganda is more likely, or else the Empire was simply going to rely on the fear factor that a relatively peaceful planet was obliterated without mercy. With the senate dissolved, nobody was in a position to denounce anything.
